About Mrs. Cream Puff

My First DIY Project

March 6th, 2008 @ 1:33 pm by Mrs. Cream Puff

After our engagement, the first thing I did was set up our website and a flickr photo page so that our friends and family could upload their pictures from the proposal. I sent out thank you cards to the people who attended and included a link to the flickr photo page, hoping people would use the password I provided and upload their stuff. Sadly, I didn’t get any takers. Not to be discouraged, I kept the flickr page and decided to create cards to put on people’s plates at the reception with instructions on how to upload their photos. I am really hoping it works! Here are the cards I made:

photocard.jpg

I will have these babies printed as postcards through Vistaprint, but I’m waiting until about a month and a half before the wedding–I’m paranoid that Yahoo! will change their uploading methods and then my instructions (which will be printed on the back) will be useless.

I feel like a super big jerk, though, because I got my inspiration from a girl on the knot, but I cannot for the life of me remember what her bio name was! Please, someone remind me and I will post it. This was her card:

of50590

For those of you who are looking to do something similar, here’s the text I wrote on the back, with the upload instructions:

“To Upload Your Photos:

1. Go to http://www.flickr.com (don’t forget, there’s no “e” in flickr!). Click “Sign In” on the top right.
2. For Yahoo! ID, enter “USERNAME” and the password is “PASSWORD”
3, Click “Upload Photos” at the top of the right column.
4. Click “Choose Photos” and browse your computer for your images. Upload as many as you are willing by clicking the “Add More” link.
5. Click the “Upload Photos” button. You can describe the photos if you’d like to, but if you don’t have time, don’t worry about it!

Thank you!

To check out everyone else’s photos from the proposal, rehearsal and wedding, visit:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/USERNAME

Sometimes it can take awhile to get your pro photos–hopefully this will make the wait a little easier!

That’s so cute! This is a great idea. I don’t know how many ppl I had to hound for photos, but then if it’s a guest of the inlaws, I didn’t have their contact info to get it from them.

Thanks for posting this. I was looking to do the same thing. I thought Flickr had a limit to the amount of images that can be posted no? Did you come across any websites that allows pictures to be posted in full resolution and downloaded in full resolution? Sony’s imagestation used to allow that with NO limit on the amount of images… sadly, it’s gone now.

I had a basket of blank CDs in pretty pre-addressed, pre-stamped envelopes with a sign asking people who took pictures to take one, upload their photos and mail it back to us. My friends all used different photo sharing sites, and this way I got them, could put them where I wanted them, and have my photographer/brother do some retouching. It was the best wedding idea I had, and the one I share with friends who are engaged.

thanks, guys!
SMT–Flickr DOES have a limit, unless you buy their pro account. And for $24/year, I figured it was worth it. Then we can upload and download as many full resolution images as we want. :)

GG–I was thinking about doing that, too…but then I thought we might end up wasting a lot of postage if people didn’t take them or didn’t send them to us. Did you have that problem?

It took me two years to finally get wedding photos from my boss, and even then it was the low-quality prints and not a digital file. Hopefully this will help other couples get their photos faster!

Nice! I was hoping to do the same kind of thing, if I had enough time! I’m totally stealing your instructions text now! ;)

Such a cute idea! I think I saw this on a Knot Bio, too, but the name escapes me.

I might have to “borrow” this from you, too! ;-)

Mrs. Lemon and I did this. It was totally worth it. I printed the instructions on the back of my escort cards. We had hundreds of photos waiting for us when we came back from our honeymoon. It kept me from hounding my photographer for the month until our pictures were released.

ha! that’s the text we’re using (”picture is worth a thousand words”) too. I’m just hoping it’s clever enough that people will remember to do it!

I was going to do this also! I think I read it on here somewhere when I was lurking! :) I’m going to put it on the back of our ceremony programs. Although I really like the take-home CD idea. I might have to look into that. Thanks guys!

I did the flickr thing too and it was a hit… 300+ photos within a week (though it was mainly my younger & technically inclined relatives that uploaded). I also included the link on my wedsite since I knew some guests would be looking for the photos after the wedding.

I wish I did this on my wedding. I’ve been ‘hounding’ friends for photos months afterwards.

I had found a card similar to this and put it in my Knot bio and that knottie had used Flickr as well. My question is can you print out pictures that you upload on Flickr? I can’t figure out how to do it, but I am not so technically inclined.

I did this at my wedding, and like your original idea for the engagement photos, did not have many takers, and I have lots of tech savy friends, so shutterfly should not have intimidated them, so don’t get your hopes too high. Although, I figure at least you are trying to get more pictures out there! Also, if you are having professional pics too, I put both addresses on one card, to simplify things for my guests.

Miss Cream Puff,
I had a guest list of about 185 people, and only made 50 envelopes. I think about 20 people took envelopes, and I got about 12 back, so the postage that was wasted was well worth it. I have reused the unused cds and envelops for other projects, and you can take the postage off the envelopes to reuse. The pictures I got were great, and totally different than my professional ones. It was well worth the expense!

I did this for my wedding as well - stole the idea from Mrs. Lemon. We didn’t pass out cards at the reception, but instead emailed everyone who attended the next day with the link and password to our flickr account, and instructions. This way, everything they needed would already be on their computer when it came time to upload. All they had to do was click on the link and login. We ended up with 300+ photos!

What a lovely idea, and a great alternative to the uber-frustrating disposable cameras.

No need to feel like a “super big jerk”, the Knottie is kermiefrg. You can go back to being fabulously creative instead!

Thank you! My FH and I had been tossing around ideas on how to do this… I love printing a reminder for everyone at the reception. I’m definitely borrowing!

i did this… i didn’t know flickr had a limit, though! anyone know how many they limit you to? i’m not sure how many of our guests will actually use it… but i ordered 250 business cards for like $5 on vistaprint so i don’t mind too much. :)

Don’t worry, staceyb, if you pay for the pro account you don’t have to worry about it. It’s only $25 for a whole year. I figure you can download all of them to your computer and then you won’t have to worry about paying $25/year for all of eternity. Here’s the difference between free and pro:

Pro:

* Unlimited uploads (10MB per photo)
* Unlimited storage
* Unlimited bandwidth
* Unlimited photosets
* Archiving of high-resolution original images
* The ability to replace a photo
* Post any of your photos in up to 60 group pools
* Ad-free browsing and sharing

Compare that to what you get with a Free Account:

* 100 MB monthly upload limit (5MB per photo)
* 3 sets
* Photostream views limited to the 200 most recent images
* Post any of your photos in up to 10 group pools
* Only smaller (resized) images accessible (though the originals are saved in case you upgrade later)

BTW: I totally missed Mrs. Lemon’s initial post about this, but I went back and read it! Awesome! I had only seen this from that one knottie. And btw, THANK YOU, buckeye, for reminding me that it is knottie kermiefrg!

GG–super smart to only get 50 for that many guests. I may have to re-think that! I was thinking of putting one on each person’s plate, but yours is a much better idea.

Great artwork Miss CreamPuff! This really works well (we also included the cards in our Thank You notes to everyone, to remind those who forgot to submit pictures as well as to share our professional pictures with everyone)

Here’s the success story of our use of flickr and the biz cards that we created:

And here’s Lollipop’s story as well:

And here is a little FAQ I did about the process and how to download all of the photos submitted on FLICKR for your own personal use (& printing!)

That is such a good idea to make cards! I was trying to think of a way to get people to definitely share their photos and this is great. Thanks :)

I wish we’d done that. That way we could have had an automatic photo page (instead of putting one together, which we didn’t do) for everyone to see.

this is an awesome idea which would definately save me from chewing off my nails while waiting for my photographer. with only 9 days to go, i’m going to have to borrow your idea because i can’t come up with anything else on my almost mushed up brain. i hope you don’t mind!
