Mrs. Hummingbird's Picture
Mrs. Hummingbird, Toronto Age and Occupation: 25, Publishing Coordinator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Videogame Designer/Cartoonist Engagement Date: May 4, 2007 Wedding Date: June 28, 2008 Blogging Since: September 18, 2007 Venue: A garden wedding followed by a tented reception on Mr. Hummingbird's father's property. About Me: I’m a pop culture loving, vintage obsessed foodie living in Canada’s biggest city with my fantastic fiancé and our lovable fluffy cat Bettie. I’m stoked to marry my best friend and to throw what I hope will be the most fun and colourful party of our lives.
About Mrs. Hummingbird

wow

Recently someone forwarded me an article about a husband’s addiction to Warcraft leading to dissolution of a marriage. The article surprised me a bit because, instead of bringing about relationship doom, I’ve felt like video games have been good for our relationship, especially lately, as Mr. Hummingbird and I have been spending a lot of time gaming together.

Before I met Mr. Hum, I have to admit, I didn’t care about gaming. For a long time, the only exposure I had to video games was when I would go over to my friend Oscar’s house and play Duck Hunt on his first generation Nintendo (remember when you had to blow on the cartridges to get them to work?).

Anyway, I never really owned my own system and had no interest in buying one until I started dating Mr. Hum. He had an X-Box and on one of our first dates, he invited me over to play Soul Caliber. Since I had never played before, I was far from a sophisticated player with combo moves, but somehow my button mashing skills worked and I trounced him, not once, not twice, but six matches in a row.

After that, I became more and more interested in playing and now, it’s gotten to the point that, in addition to our two computers, we have four gaming systems in our house, two of which were bought at my insistence.

With the all the work and planning we’ve been putting into our big day lately, I’ve found that having a fun distraction like a gaming system in the house has been absolutely invaluable. Not only can we use it to settle arguments about ridiculous wedding issues (”Winner of this round gets to pick favours!”), but it’s been a valuable stress reliever, a way for us to put aside the wedding and just be goofy for a while. It’s funny, I never thought it would be the case, but sometimes after a very long day of dealing with dress stuff, I feel more at ease as Princess Daisy than I do as a Princess Bride.

Anyway, since it’s the weekend and time for fun, I want to know - what fun/silly hobby or pastime do you share with your FI/DH?

We play games together too! I played a few games before I met my FH, but he really got me more into console gaming than I was before.

Games for us too! A good round of Mario Party 8 on the Wii or some Lego Stars Wars, Rock Band, or Marvel “Ultimate Alliance” on the Xbox 360 does wonders…

For the Horde!
We play WoW too. He had played it before and it’s my first time and I adore it. I do think it brings us closer and it’s fin because I’m dps and he’s a tank, so we both can expend a little aggression watchings things go boom. (we’re undead, btw, so there’s extra gratification in cannibalization).

Before meeting my fiance I had little interest in sports, but now I am a co-owner of a fantasy football team with him (he’s been playing with his Dad and a group of family friends since he was 10…now everything is online and much easier) and it’s definitely brought us closer together.

We also play a lot of cards and board games together…my favorites are scattergories and taboo.

We are looking into getting either the Wii or X-Box soon…he thinks he’ll be able to convert me into a gaming lover. Does anyone feel strongly that one is better than the other?

FI is a video game programmer, so I’d better love to play! =)

And I thought I was the only closet WoW player. Instead of always chastising the FI for playing so much, I decided to try it and see what the big deal was. I quickly found it was something we could do together and have fun with. Our other favorite is our Wii- sandy I would definitely recommend that over the X-Box. There are more games geared towards girls in my opinion.

My current fave is “Zack and Wiki”- it’s a cool pirate treasure puzzle solving game!

We both LOVE video games! It’s a great way to spend time together and do something you both enjoy. Our latest obsession is Rock Band, he plays the drums and I play the guitar. I think we’re almost ready to go on tour… ;)

Also it’s a great alternative to going out and spending a lot of money on the weekends (especially when you’re saving for a wedding!)

Before my fiancé got a full time job we used to play video games together. Xbox and World of Warcraft. It was a lot of fun leveling with him, but now he sees WoW as a waste of time. I miss having my own personal tank. :(

I’m quite pleased that the terms dps and tank came up within 3 comments. Hoorah for geekiness.
Ms. Hummingbird and I are a Tauren couple. She’s a hunter and I’m a druid, so that way she can stay out of harms way while I can focus on keeping us healed and alive. Even in WoW, I’m protective of my girl ;)

My FH and I play WoW together. I’m a Troll Mage and he is an orc hunter/undead rogue. We also played together when we weren’t a couple…but I like to think it brought us together :)

We also have a Wii, gamecube and a PS2. We like video games in our house.

Mr. Lemon jokes that if I didn’t like WOW, we probably wouldn’t have lasted. ;) We both love video games, but sadly my strength is DDR & Wii… whereas he is the master of all shooting games. So, right now we’re not playing much together, but hopefully we can find some new games that occupy us as much as WOW. We kinda gave up after the wedding and our IRL friends left. 2 years of hardcore raiding did us in.

My FH & I play wow together too. We are actually both healers (he recentlychanged specs) which doesn’t make playing together always so easy anymore.

I wasn’t really into videogames besides Nintendo when I was younger but after we moved in together I am hooked. It is nice to hear I am not the only one, I am still kinda in the closet about it ;)

We MET on WoW lol. I moved from WA to CA to be with him, and the first thing we had set up before any of the furniture had arrived was our internet so that we wouldn’t miss even a day of raiding >=)

My fiance and I actually first met when we were playing Counterstrike 5 years ago. We were in the same clan and when we had a get together he was surprised to find out that I was not a dude. ;-)

My fiance introduced me to Final Fantasy XI (an mmorpg) when we started dating, and we chatted a lot through it when I was long-distance for school. Since then we continue to play FFXI and spots of WoW and other console games like Wii Sports and Rockband together :)
He’s tried to get me snowboarding too but I’m not so good at that :P

HA! mark this as my favorite post i’ve read on this site yet. he’s gotten me into all sorts of games– video, computer, real-life. i’ve been introduced to my love of u of m football (necessary for a satisfying relationship for him), video games like gauntlet (legends), mario party, final fantasy… we play lots of oldies because i’m just now starting to catch up (he went and bought an n-64 just to show me mario party 2). he even hunted down the one game i played in my chidlhood on the orginal nintendo (M.C. kids, most people haven’t heard of it) so he could learn it with me!

weird fact though: we play warcraft (the original) but both haven’t found much fun in the world of warcraft games (it may have something to do with the pay-to-play aspect).

We both love DDR! Which is great because we don’t get to the gym that often, so it is a good way to work up a sweat and spend some time together.

The uncool beanchars currently own no gaming devices, BUT we did play a lot of Pocket Tanks ( http://www.blitwise.com/ptanks.html ) when we were first dating. Around that same time, he also downloaded a copy of elementary-school learning tool “Oregon Trail” ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Oregon_Trail_(computer_game) ) . Being secret sadists, we liked to send our settlers off with little food and a massive team of oxen at a “grueling pace” and then laugh hysterically as weak-link child-settler “Timmy” suffered various devastating maladies (cholera, dysentery, typhoid, measles!!). Like I said, UN-COOL.

On a side note, we played our first Wii this weekend visiting our godchildren. The attempt to match mr beanchar’s ponytail and beard resulted in a sort of hippie-Amish Adolph Hitler Mii. ;)

FH & I love playing World of Warcraft together (aka - WoW). Even my future father-in-law plays. We make an awesome team…. he heals me and I kill a bunch of stuff. It’s a match made in heaven. ;-) And no, never played WoW before meeting my fiancé.

And BTW, I still play the first generation of Nintendo, it was my gift from my fiancé during our first Christmas.

Neither of us is really into video games, but I can see us getting a Wii sometime in the future (or whatever cool system they have by that point). I am absolutely terrible at video games, just not coordinated like that I guess! But I occasionally played the original Warcraft and I LOVED Oregon Trail when I was little. I would totally start playing that again! (Thanks beanchar, I had forgotten! :-D)
Other than that, we love hiking and skiing/boarding with each other, or really anything else active. We’re all about playing together!
