A Little Thing That Will Change

March 10th, 2008 @ 3:07 pm by Ms. Dahlia

I was talking with my dad on Saturday, and he called me “Miss Meg.” It’s something that he has called me as long as I can remember.

And I thought about it, and mentioned to him, that I will no longer be “Miss Meg” come May. (Not that I’ll be a Mrs., since I’m not changing my name. But I definitely will not be a Miss.)

It’s one of those little things that I never really thought about that will change when I get married.

What little thing have you noticed that will change after you’re married?

Mr Corn’s nickname for me is ‘m.z.’…my maiden initials. We just hit the 6 month mark and he’s still using it. Truth be told, I would miss it if he didn’t :)

my name is very common, so i have always gone by “firstnamelastname” or by my initials, depending on how i know the person… but i am never just “firstname”. having to change my last initial really makes me sad… i’m excited to get married, i love my fiancee more than anything, but i am very attached to my last name. many people have told me that they don’t plan on changing what they call me, that they will always know me with that last name - and that makes me feel a little bit better. but it’s still hard. :(

Mr. Penguin and I still sleep in seperate quarters when we go visit his parents back home (even though we live together) so it will be funny to go back home and start sleeping in the same room!

Interestingly enough, I am getting called “Miss Suzanne” for the first time in my life. My FI’s teenage son and his friends have all been taught by a friend’s mother who is from the south to call her “Miss Louise,” so they just think that’s how you respectfully address somebody’s mom, if you like her. (If you don’t, you don’t call her anything at all.)

For me, it was filling out forms. Single? Married? Divorced? It was weird to train myself one way and then switch to another. It still makes me smile though everytime I do it.

I work in education, so my last name is a huge part of my identity. I am not looking forward from the switch from a simple last name (Mack) to a longer one (Trapanese-like Japanese, with a T, as Andrew’s mother tells her students). Luckily, I work with mostly adults, so it shouldn’t be that big of a deal….

Meg, let your dad keep calling you Miss Meg. It’s a name–You can totally keep the “Miss” :-) -I mean, it’s your dad. Unless, you are totally opposed to being “Miss Meg” and don’t like it…Then, it might be a good way to keep him from calling you that. BUT…If it were me, and if it was my dad calling me “Miss” (which I guess my dad did…since my name is Melissa…that was his nickname for me), I’d just let him keep calling me “Miss.”

My parents live in Oklahoma and I live in California. In a weird twist of fate, my future in-laws live in the same small town in Oklahoma as my parents - long story. I just realized recently, that the next time we go home to visit, we’ll be a married couple - and where will we sleep? Under my parent’s roof or his? As much as I like his parents, the thought of not staying up late chatting with my mom, sleeping in my old bed with the family pets at the foot of it, and waking up to the scent of my dad baking waffles just breaks my heart. I only get home about once a year, so this change is going to be a hard one for me.

Preppy gal that I am, I’m going to miss my monogram. I’m keeping all three of my names and adding on the new last name, so a 4-name monogram gets tricky.

On a less trivial note, I’m also not looking forward to splitting the big holidays like Christmas and Thanksgiving. We had our first taste of it this year and it’s just no fun.

I’m getting married in three months, but my office is ordering bulk business cards NOW. For those first three months, seeing Firstname Notmylastname on my business cards is gonna be oh so weird.
