Fine Tune-ing The Playlist

March 10th, 2008 @ 3:38 pm by Mrs. Hummingbird

Last week, I began searching for the perfect tunes to play at the wedding. As I discovered, coming up with wedding appropriate songs was much harder than I anticipated as my CD collection was generally filled with more trendy than danceable discs.

So, after some research on my own and some of your awesome suggestions, I took to compiling what I have come to call “The Ultimate Playlist.” 1950s pop, 1960s soul, 1970s disco, 1980s new wave, I put it all together on one massive list and sat back, feeling satsified with all my hard work. However, after doing the math, I soon realized that I had done my job a little too well as I had ended up with about 10 hours worth of music.

As much as I hated to do it, it was time to start cutting. However, because I wanted to get Mr. Hum’s opinion and because I didn’t want to cut songs without hearing them myself (you never know when something’s going to work), I wanted to create a playlist with all our options and take a listen. But how do you do that when you don’t have all the CDs?

Happily, I discovered that this is possible with a website called finetune. It’s free to sign up and you can create a bunch of playlists with your favourite full length songs, so I spent part of my Sunday putting together 3 playlists worth of wedding tunes.

As we’re currently slicing through the 135 song playlist I’ve created, I have no final music news, but I figured I would pass along this little musical gem to you guys and see what you thought. For those who are currently working on their playlists, what musical tools/links have you discovered to help you on your quest for the perfect playlist?

(In case anyone needs help/is interested, here is the link to my finetune page. It has pretty much all my wedding playlist stuff and another playlist called Help, I’m Emo And I Can’t Get Up! which is full of a bunch of other good stuff.)

very cool lists. One thing my DJ did tell me though, and again, she is friggin awesome, is that guests in general don’t respond to songs that they don’t really know, no matter how good a song is. So when we were telling her these artists and songs that were more off the beaten path, she suggested incorporating some into the cocktail hour, but not the actual dancing. Just a thought…

“Help, I’m Emo And I Can’t Get Up!” has got to be one of the funniest things I’ve read in a long time! Hahahahahahah!

Thanks for your lists! Bet you I’ll be borrowing a few of these for our wedding. Also, I’ve been so bad at downloading any new music that this is refreshing. Love it!

My man was a dj at a popular club here in Toronto for many years and has done several weddings and he has always said that people won’t dance to songs they aren’t familiar with, the exception to this rule is once people are a really into dancing and a bit drunk!
Just something to keep in mind…that said I would dance to all of them! Good taste Hummingbird!
