We both work in politics and share a love of University of Georgia football, pop culture, and good food! I'm a runner who adores wedding magazines, bad reality television, and a good glass of wine. It’s All In The Details (Part One)

March 10th, 2008 @ 1:38 pm by Mrs. Magnolia

Technically, I guess my post on oliviamoon’s pendants was my first in the “detail” series, but since I didn’t number it as such, we’ll just start this one as one, shall we?

Mr. Magnolia and I didn’t spend a whole lot of time thinking about favors. We basically figured that if a great idea came to us that wouldn’t break the bank, then we would have them… but if nothing came to mind, we just wouldn’t worry about it.

Initially we considered hiring The Varsity Catering truck to show up at midnight and serve chili dogs, onion rings, and F.O.s (Frosted Orange drinks), because there’s very little that’s more “Atlanta” than the Varsity. Plus, I was hoping they’d give us a discount since our reception was pretty much around the corner from the restaurant. Ultimately, we decided that it was out of our budget, plus there was the issue of the catering department not being particularly responsive… something I have a serious problem with. Anyway, eventually I decided on another course of action in the favor department - something that was definitely still intricately linked to the city of Atlanta…

Coca-Cola!

I have to disclose that I do, in fact, have a connection to the company that allowed me a significant discount on nine cases of the special edition holiday bottles (a glass, non-contour design, circa the mid-1890s).

I would suggest, if you decide to purchase Coca-Cola bottles as favors, that you check out your local Costco, Sam’s Club, or other bulk merchandiser. Buying the six-packs retail can add up quickly!

I also purchased favor tags from etsy seller paperfarrago - mostly in shades of blue and brown, both with and without yarn or ribbon attached. On one side of each favor tag, I wrote a thank you message to our guests. I say “one side,” because some of the tags were made of one-sided paper, while others were two-sided. In those cases, I simply wrote on the lighter side.

Paperfarrago was a great etsy seller who responded quickly, shipped the tags promptly, and I would definitely consider ordering from again!

Overall, our favors were a big hit with our guests, and I’m truly pleased that we were able to come up with an affordable way to represent us as well as honor the city we love.

Is anyone else planning to do favors that are related to their wedding location?

Yes! We didn’t want to do favors initially (we are donating to a charity for research for a disease from which his dad died) but we decided to have something small to give our guests that was either food or drink - and I’m pretty sure we are going to be giving our guests bottles of Brooklyn Brewery beer (our wedding will be in Brooklyn, and Brooklyn Lager was the subject of the first conversation we had and was our first point of flirtation - so it is special in terms of how our relationship started).

I just wanted to say that you have our dream favor. Glass bottle coke is FI’s favorite thing in the whole world (I get him some for every birthday/holiday/lame excuse to buy some for him.) ;) We looked at it, but it was out of our price range.

Yours look so darn cute!

very cool!

i’ve considered lottery tickets, bc i have a personal link with a lottery, but since my dad is a pastor, and there will no doubt be some very traditional church officers there, this may not be the best idea.

We tried to find a nice balance between “Cape Cod Wedding” and just plain “Wedding,” and it ended up being “Cape Cod Welcome Party” and a plain “Wedding.” Friday night’s party was all cranberries and clam chowder and Cape Cod brand potato chips and more cranberries, but Saturday’s wedding…yeah, there was cranberry juice available, but that was it.

I’m from the Philly area and am getting married in Newport so when guests are leaving we are putting out Philly Soft Pretzels and Tasty cakes to represent. Also, I’m sure my guests can use the extra carbs at the end of the night!

My fiance and I are both South Florida natives despite our current residence in Dallas, so naturally we decided to have our wedding at home in Florida since that’s where most of our family and friends are anyway.

We met while attending the University of Florida - and while we definitely wanted to incorporate our ties to the Gators - I definitely did not want to liberally splash orange and blue (not in the shades of our alma mater, anyway…) all over an event meant to be timeless and classy! So, I’ve come up with the idea of having little chocolate alligators as a favor to tie in our love of the Florida Gators. After all, if it weren’t for our meeting at “The Swamp” as they call it, we wouldn’t be having this day!
