Matching Metals

March 10th, 2008 @ 11:18 am by Mrs. Toucan

Phew! After a quickie trip to New York City, Mr. Toucan and I have both of our wedding rings!

Matching Metals : wedding rings Z135415.jpg

Our wedding bands in a pile with my E-ring

When it came to choosing my wedding band, I had two criteria.

1. Because different metals age and wear differently and my engagement ring setting is platinum, I really wanted my band to be platinum.
2. I wanted to be able to wear the band alone, without my engagement ring. (I wear my e-ring all the time now, but in some situations, I think I would prefer to wear something simpler).

Anyway, this ring fit both of my criteria:

My wedding band alone. (eek! my hands look ancient in this picture!)

And, together with my e-ring:

The wedding band doesn’t quite sit flush with my e-ring because of the 6-prong setting, but it isn’t really noticeable unless you look really close.

When it came to picking out Mr. Toucan’s ring, he initially only had 1 criterion - something simple, no bling. After looking into all different kinds of metals (titanium and palladium are becoming increasingly popular), we kept coming back to platinum purely because of the sentiment. He really wanted his ring to “match” mine. After some bargaining, we were able to bring home this 5mm platinum band for Mr. Toucan:

Up close (you can see Mr. T’s reflection!)

He’s happy. I’m happy, and we both can’t wait to actually wear them!

What kind of metal did you choose for your wedding band? Does your fiance/spouse have a matching band?

My e-ring is white gold, and my wedding ring will be too. My FI started out wanting a plain band, but over the past 4 months has somehow morphed into wanting 3 channel set diamonds. (Probably my fault, I think that is a nice look for a man’s ring, and kept pointing out our friends and co-workers who have that style.) Since my e-ring has 8 graduated channel set diamonds plus the center stone, and my wedding ring will be 10 graduated channel set diamonds, his will now match. I have no idea what he wants for metal; I am assuming he will go with white gold like mine, but if he wants platinum that is fine too!

Very nice! We are also doing all platinum. My e-ring has a decorated band, which I realized during wedding band shopping means that no ring can lie flush against it. But, the rings look gorgeous together anyway. My FI has a plain ring with a brushed stripe running through the middle of it.

We have the same wedding band. I love mine-simple on its own and elegant, but doesn’t overpower my 6-prong e-ring either.

Those rings are beautiful. Why did you decide to go to NYC for your rings? FI and I have been looking around the DC area, but not finding a good selection. Maybe we should head up to NYC. Can you share which jeweler you went to? Thanks!

brombesa, we went to Miligree Jewelers in the Diamond District. The address is:
69 W 47th St
New York, NY 10036

For us traveling to NYC isn’t a big deal because we travel there all the time to visit my extended family (both of my parents families live in NYC area). Additionally, Mr. Toucan bought my e-ring there, so we decided to try there first to see if there was a matching wedding band. They ended up making my band custom for me.

My E-ring is a 1.5mm platinum band with 4-prongs. My W-ring is a 2.5mm platinum milgrain band. I really wanted it to be simple and elegant. I am also allergic to gold and heard that platinum is allergy-free and holds up very well over time.

My FI is getting a stainless steal band. He didn’t really want to splurge on the platinum. The funny thing is his ring ended up costing 1% of what my rings combined costed! :)

All of my rings are set in platinum and I think it’s well worth it. My sister actually brought one of my bands to a jeweler to have it remade in white gold and the price difference was pretty substantial. It actually made me wish I had it made in white gold so I could have a little more money in the bank! The jeweler has not finished making my FH’s ring, but his is white gold with diamonds in it. He wanted titanium, but I said at the very least, get white gold, so we settled on that.

I think it would really bother me if the colors didn’t match (titanium is far too dark and gold is just a no), but between platinum and white gold, I don’t mind it so much.

FI and I got matching plain, platinum bands for a few reasons. One, we both like the symbolism of wearing identical bands. Two, we’re fortunate enough to travel frequently, and my engagement ring is pretty large; thus I never travel with it, but I wanted to feel safe wearing my wedding band, and I wouldn’t have felt safe traveling with a diamond eternity band either. I plan to get an eternity band for an anniversary or other major event, but I’m thrilled with our matching platinum bands for our wedding!

we just bought our bands this past weekend too! my ering is set in platinum, so fi and i decided to get both of our bands in platinum as well. i got a 3mm simple band, while fi got a 4mm flat band to match. the sale lady kept pushing for a half-circle diamond band, which almost changed my mind.

Our W-bands are going to match which was really important to FH. Engraved with a vine/leaf pattern that we mimicked in the invitations and on the cake. His will be in white gold but mine will be platinum to match my E-ring. We are REALLY excited to see how they turn out!

my e-ring is platinum with a single diamond. it is a pretty unique shape so there is a custom wedding band that matches it in plain platinum. my FH is getting a tungsten ring with platinum inlay. the tungsten is pretty cool. i am surprised it hasn’t been mentioned in this post yet.

I finally got my fiancé to look at rings this weekend and he likes the titanium ones - phew! (I thought he wouldn’t like anything!) Mine will be white gold, so they won’t match but they won’t be too different.

Yours look beautiful :)

My e-ring is white gold, and my wedding ring will be the same, and my fiancé wants a tungsten band because they never scratch. :]

my ring is also a 6 prong but they are removing the bottom prong and adding something in between so it will sit flush, and have support. if that is something that is a big deal to you, i think it can be done on all rings!

My e-ring is platinum and I debated on whether to stick with a platinum band or not. I have a 3 ring ering and the diamonds itself are hefty enough that i want a plain band. I don’t like TOO much bling (yes…i’m not crazy). Considering the price of platinum vs white gold vs palladium - i want to find somethign cheaper, but the part about the metals wearing down at different rates was what stumped me. maybe i’ll get a simple band for now and upgrade to an eternity in platinum later. =)

I like the combo! I have a six prong ring too and I really don’t mind if it doesn’t sit flush. We already have very plain bands, but lately I’ve been hankering for a diamond band so I can wear it without my e-ring. It’s good to see that they look good together.

We just went wedding band shopping this past weekend. I have a plat e-ring and am still looking for a matching plat band. FI loved the Tungsten Carbide rings! They’re super durable and won’t scratch! Plus they’re super inexpensive.
