My Non Bachelorette Party

March 10th, 2008 @ 1:09 pm by Mrs. Violet

Some of you may remember I wasn’t too fond of the idea of a bachelorette party filled with dancing, stripping and alcohol so I decided to forgo a party altogether. Then my BM Sharrie commented that I should still do something. A few options came to mind which included: a day at the spa, dinner and a show and perhaps a weekend getaway; but by the time these ideas were thrown around, it was just about 3 weeks to my wedding which didn’t give us much time to plan something elaborate. Besides, I didn’t want to have my girls spend more. Finally, I figured it out. Yes I sort of planned my own party, but I think it worked out better that way. I gathered up a few girls including my sister in laws and niece and we all headed to Color Me Mine in Tribeca to paint pottery!

The studio is filled with ready to paint items of all prices and sizes.

Here are my final pieces - two coffee mugs.

Before glaze: These may look simple but I painted 3 coats, and spent quite a bit time painting our initials, done without stencils!

Our initials: W & M. One is for Mr. Violet and the other is for me. At the time, I really wanted to make a pair of something for us to use that was practical but also memorable. Mr. Violet & I use our mugs religiously.

Not only that, it’s a constant reminder of our wedding planning period, and Mr. Violet especially loves the extra surprise I added inside each mug.

Painting pottery was definitely relaxing and even affordable. We all had a great time. It seems non bachelorette parties are not that uncommon anymore. They don’t have to involve strippers and booze. All that really matters is that you have a good time. Don’t you agree?

Oh and on another note, painting pottery makes a great date too. A couple of years ago, Mr. Violet and I went to have brunch and then spent two hours at Our Name is Mud. He made a piggy bank & I made a ring holder. I was afraid that he would have been bored, but he took his painting very seriously. In fact, I was done much sooner than he was and ended up waiting for him to finish his masterpiece. His green spotted pig now sits proudly on his computer table.

That was actually the first date me and my FH went on - and we re-created it on our 3 year anniversary as well. So fun and romantic!

Cool!

this is one thing i have always wanted to do. i had considered it as an activity for the first time our mothers met. in the end, we ended up just eating lunch and going back to his house to talk.

i plan to do this soon, though!

Hi Mrs. Violet it was nice meeting you at the Brooklyn Home Show. You look adorable and bubbly that day. Regarding to this blog I wish I had a friend who like to enjoy simple things to do on a bachelorette party.

I felt so sad when my friend who’s getting married stated that she accommodated only me not to go to a strip club. The way she put makes me feel like I don’t want to attend to the bachelorette party anymore cause of that.

For my sister’s bachelorette party last Fall we did this same thing. It was so much fun and a great way to include our younger sister and young cousins!

We had my friend’s “bachelorette party” at the same Color Me Mine! It was a very low-key event–just me, another bridesmaid, and her future sister-in-law. We let the bride-to-be pick out the pottery pieces she wanted then we painted them for her and gave them to her as a gift. My cookie jar is sitting on the kitchen counter of her new house!

Here are my pics from the day:

Mrs. Violet, I wish I had pics of the final product. It looked so much better when it was all glazed and shiny! IMHO, very Jonathan Adler-like.

Now I need to go back and make one for myself!
