About Mrs. Flamingo

Going back to our discussion of Europe vs. Disneyland, Mr. Flamingo and I still don’t agree on our honeymoon location. I’ve tried on several accounts to bring up all the pros of Europe or other places he hasn’t gone in Europe, but it doesn’t interest him like Disneyland doesn’t interest me.

The other option that we would definitely somewhat agree on, is a sunny destination.

I feel that a honeymoon is special, somewhere you wouldn’t necessarily visit on your yearly vacation spot, so I tend to be picky on the location. Secondly, I don’t want to go somewhere we’ve been before like Cuba. We’d like an all-inclusive package so we won’t need to worry about anything. I would also like to relax (meaning some sort of spa option), go to the beach and visit some historical sights. Of course there’s the classic Mexico honeymoon where all these options seem possible… but I don’t want to go somewhere too touristy.

I thought 4 days on land and 3 on a cruise was an interesting idea - but nope… how could I forget that Mr. Flamingo is afraid of the ocean.  Mr. Flamingo is still in school (and isn’t really allowed to miss any days), but we’re hoping for a 2 week vacation.  With two weeks, we could do 2 destinations. We both really love this idea!

The wedding is almost 3 months away, and I’m not liking this lack of organization. Am I the only one having problems agreeing on a honeymoon location? Are you opting for a sunny destination and if so, any suggestions on places we can go?

We’re getting married in June too, and debated over honeymoon location for a long time. Just a few weeks ago, we were 90% set on going to BELIZE! Which I think definitely sounds like a contender for you. It’s an up and coming destination, so not yet overtly touristy (some good NY Times articles on Belize). My FI can’t swim, so ocean was not the main attraction, but Belize has beaches, mountains, rainforests, quiet fishing villages, ancient Mayan ruins… and it’s far enough from the Caribbean to be out of hurricane paths.

in the end, we followed our shared love of food and decided to take a culinary vacation to Canada instead =)

But I would suggest Belize for you. I even have a Rough Guides travel guide if you want it ;-)

We are considering Belize, too! There are gorgeous resorts there in the jungle or on the ocean, and Francis Ford Coppola has two (or three?) resorts there that are GORGEOUS. Blancaneaux is the one we’re looking into…I would definately check it out, even if just for the gorgeous pictures on the website!

I suggest Belize too! That’s where we went. We had an all inclusive at http://www.almondbeachbelize.com/ and stayed in a beachfront casita.

LOVED IT. highly. highly recommend it.

We are going to Costa Rica–highly recommended! You have the relaxing ocean beaches plus rainforests, hot springs, and volcano walks… How can you go wrong? We originally wanted to go to Italy, but marriage and (a first time trip to) Europe sounds like too much at one time. There is so much planning involved for Europe and it’s very pricey after the fund drainage of wedding planning.

We got an excellent all-inclusive 7-night stay in Costa Rica for an amazing price.

I know that Disneyland is a point of contention for you both, but might I suggest spending a couple of days there (two is good so that you don’t get bored, but you still have enough time to do just about everything) and then renting a car to drive over to Palm Springs! It’s only about 2 hrs if I recall (my parents do all the driving when we go from LA to PS) and it’s a total climate change! You’d get your sunshine and your Disney all in one trip!
Plus PS has tons of fun things do to, golf, sightseeing, water parks, tons of shopping, and an amazing view if you take the tram up to the top of the San Bernadino Mountains!

We are also headed to Costa Rica this coming month for our honeymoon, check the calender though cause I hear rainy season isnt exactly ideal in Costa Rica. It does have a ton to offer so if you guys are thinking of going for two weeks it is perfect. You can go spend a week on the Guntacasta coast (where alot of the all inclusives are, we are going for the Occidental Grand Papgayo) and then do a week traveling the country to see the various sites. They have the Monteverde cloud forests (you can go ziplining through them or do walks), the Arenal Volcano (regularly active every night), amazing lakes, hotsprings, waterfalls, coffe plantations, etc. There is a ton of stuff to see and do so definatly put it on your short list. The great thing (which unfortunatly since we are only there a week, so we cant take advantage of) is that you can do so much in one country. From my understanding once you get off the all inclusives it is also remarkably cheap to stay in nice little bed and breakfasts (like 20 -40 dollars a night at most). Good luck what ever you decide!

We are going to Hawaii for two weeks — first to the Big Island, then Maui. We’ve been there before, but wanted to go somewhere easy and relaxing instead of planning an intense out of the country honeymoon. It’s absolutely gorgeous and the weather should be nice when we’re there in June/July. We’re staying at the Fairmont on the Big Island with a package deal we found through Costco. Maui is TBD… Good luck!

how about Portugal ? You can fly to Lisbon, stay for a few days, then drive ( it’s only about hr drive) or fly to Algarve, the southern most region of Portugal famous for its beaches. And if you think it’s too long for two weeks youcan hop over to Morocco for the second week or go to the island of Madeira.

We’re going to St. Thomas in the Caribbean, it wasn’t our first choice though… that was Provodenciales in the Turks & Caicos region, which is supposed to be lovely and a bit more secluded. We weren’t able to go since our honeymoon is a gift from FILs’ resort timeshare. However, what if you went somewhere down there, and then just took a couple day layover in Orlando on your way back and went to Disneyworld?

Puerto Rico isn’t that big, you could probably see most of the island in 2 weeks, and you’d get to save money by spending our crummy USD against your Loonies!

I second the Portugal idea, it is a beautiful country and it is supposed to be one of the cheaper places to visit in Europe. Plus, from there you do have other places you could go visit. How often do you hear people say they went to Portugal for their honeymoon? I know I’m trying to go there since we are both Portuguese and have both never been.

Lillindy , if you do go to Portugal , do try to get to Maderia! it’s where my family is fun and my experience was magical . Just don’t stay in the city too much.

Miss Flamingo , I’m going to throw out St Augustine florida. Tons to do , very romantic b&b (en suite too , not with shared bathrooms) fine dining , great golf , lots of history , good beaches. no passport required.

as for as The Boy and I , we don’t know where but we’ve centered on a cruise , it’s what he’s most comfortable with.

My wedding is in June too, and we still haven’t decided on a honeymoon. My original plan was Alaska (which I’d LOVE), but besides the wildlife and scenery, I really wanted to see the Northern Lights. Since June in Alaska = about 24 hours of daylight, it’s a no go. We were thinking of doing a mini-trip to either Martha’s Vineyard or Florida, and then go to Alaska in late August or Early September, but we also can’t afford to go wild and crazy with expenses. It’s tough. I wish we could go overseas, but it’s just not in the cards right now. :/

Wow, thank you for all you ideas. To be honest, i’ve never even heard of Belzile. Where is it exactly… because I googled it and no luck.

Portugual would be pretty… but I dont even think Mr.Flamingo would want to go there…. hes really set on going down south. Though Costa Rica seems interesting, I dont know how the prices were.

Would you be kind enough to give me your hotel websites?
THanks again. Man, I dont know if we will ever make a choice.

What about Aruba? Or if you go to Florida you can always go to the gorgeous & relaxing Little Palm Island - I think you’d love it!

We’re having a bit of a combination honeymoon- we’re going to Hawaii for 10 days and then flying into washington and driving across the state to Glacier National Park, where my friend is getting married. We’ll attend her wedding, swing down through Yellowstone and then fly home. It’s a perfect combination of sunny relaxation and mountainous adventure. :)

We booked our h.m. exactly 1 week before our wedding because we couldn’t decide! We ended up going to Costa Rica and I recommend it more than I can say. We spent 4 nights in the jungle (Tabacon Spa Resort) and I couldn’t imagine a better place for a honeymoon- then 4 nights at an all inclusive resort at the beach which was beautiful but just alright.
