About Miss Cupcake

I have an unhealthy number of wedding magazines. Probably not nearly as many as some brides, but nonetheless, there’s a lot of ’em. It started innocently enough a few months before we got engaged when I couldn’t resist a pretty cover on the newsstand in Border’s. It escalated to full-blown over-consumption once the ring was on my finger. Subscribe to Modern Bride and Brides for the price of one? SCORE! That Martha Stewart Weddings “special” color issue? Well I HAVE to get that!

Once I found my dress, a lot of my wedding mags seemed to be a lot less useful, but I still can’t quite let go of them. I have torn some notable ideas out of them and put them in my wedding binder, but what if that PERFECT signature cocktail recipe is still hiding in the remains of the April 2007 issue of Bride & Bloom? I couldn’t possibly just throw. that. away! Mr. Cupcake has hinted at maybe getting rid of a few, but a stern glare shut him up pretty quickly. However, these mags do take up an obscene amount of space, and storage space is at a minimum in our apartment. So where do I keep all this “wedding porn”?

Ladies, I give you, in all its glory…… the wine rack of bridal magazines.

Good thing we don’t have any money leftover to buy wine — there would be nowhere to keep it! (And in case you are wondering: no, this is by no means my full collection of bridal magazines.)

What kind of system do you have for organizing your “stash”?

That is very clever! And much more functional than my under the bed so my FI doesn’t see that I just paid $11.00 for a magazine!

Ha, funny that you bring this up. Last night, at 3am, while in the midst of wanting to drop-kick my laptop with stupid stupid stupid Prism which refused to calculate the EC50 data for my drugs which I needed ASAP for an abstract submission, I needed to step back and take a break before I tore all my hair out. And then I noticed.. the massive piles of bridal magazines. We have a coffee table with a ton of built-in shelves underneath and each of the 6 compartments is stuffed with magazines. So, I started going through them and pulling out useful articles and then I am going to THROW THE REST AWAY. The wedding police are going to come arrest me for that, aren’t they?

hee hee! That looks pretty cute! I just keep mine in with our other huge magazine bins. Mr Penguin and I are big fans of magazines (food, wine, travel, wedding, gossip) so another 10 subscriptions in the mix wasn’t too shocking although wedding magazines are DARN thick arent they?

I dont plan on throwing mine away after the wedding…there are a lot of great hostess/design elements that will be great for lots of “non wedding related” functions (or of course, showers and parties that might be thrown in the future!)

My system….loan them out to my engaged friend and let her stash them so I have room for more. At least the end is in sight for you. I have* to buy them to stay updated on wedding trends.

*okay, not exactly have to, but um…yeah.

Wow… neat-o Miss Cupcake. I still have to find a nice way to display all my bridal magazine. I cant let go of them either…

How adorable! I have one shelf on the end table for Wedding Magazines and Planning Binders. I have trouble housing all of the decoration nonsense. Is there a winerack alternative for 20 centerpiece vases?

I. Love. It. :) It is funny that you mention this surplus bridal mag predicament, because just this weekend I purchased a very pretty basket at Joann Fabrics (all of my favorite things were up to 50% off!!!) to keep my ever growing arsenal of wedding reading from becoming its own focal point in our apartment. I’ve managed to keep my purchasing under control, but now my friend who just got married is sending me all of the magazines SHE purchased throughout her engagement! Oh well, what’s a girl to do? ;)

I rip out anything that catches my eye, store it in a binder and then recycle the carcass.

I also do this with catalogs like Pottery Barn and Crate & Barrel of stuff I like. Both for things I want to buy and for decorating ideas.

When the binder gets too full, I got through the pages and if I can’t figure out why I kept it, then I toss it. :)

Its decreased my clutter considerably.

I put mine in plastic crates you can buy at Staples. The rest of my mags are strewn about the floor. D:

I second cs’s plan, and I’ll raise her a Real Simple.

For Christmas my FI bought me this big leather ottoman with a top that comes off so you can store things in it and I think my first thought was “great now I can use this to store all my wedding stuff in”. It’s perfect because it’s right where I want it to read and look through all the magazine and no one needs to know how many I have.
JenniferB, love the comment about hiding the $11 magazines, I feel the same way. I just keep saying “no I already had this one before” :)

My suggestion… once you made a decision, then you see some “new” cake in the Modern Bride magazine you just have to have, you will begin to second guess yourself. IT IS DANGEROUS! So what I did was pull out all the articles and photos i wanted to keep, and gave them all to a girl I know that is getting married after I am. Think about it… if they are between 4 and 12 dollars and you have 10 or 20..thats a lot to toss in the garbage! I felt good about passing mine along and my bookshelves thanked me as well! haha!

I keep them in the bathroom and call them wedding porn. Guests are always amused.

ha, I was just trying to choose some wedding magazines yesterday to send off to my sister the other day, who’s now planning her wedding (from overseas, actually)–and I was having the hardest time giving them up! I think I’m going to have to send her all new ones…

MSW just never gets old! (well, so far)

I wish I could follow cs’s organizational plan…

I’m totally stealing this idea for my studio. I keep so many fashion mags (and bridal mags too) that I can’t bear to toss. Clever and cute!
