Ch-Ch-Changes!

March 11th, 2008 @ 2:56 pm by Miss Cream Puff

For the most part, having things done ahead of time is a MAJOR blessing. Sometimes, however, it can be a bit of a catastrophe.

Several months ago, I reserved a block of rooms at a very cute boutique hotel less than a block from our reception site. I thought it was perfect. Apparently my uncle disagreed.

When he called to make reservations, he found out there was no air conditioning, which did not make him happy. He called my parents to tell them about the lack of air conditioning, and subsequently my dad was not happy. Both of them were so not happy, in fact, that they decided we needed to change the block of rooms to a bigger hotel. Nevermind the fact that this is San Francisco, and air conditioning is totally unnecessary. Apparently it was a big deal to them. As much as this annoyed me, I decided it was okay. Whatever, right? So they wanted to move us to another hotel. I can roll with the punches as easily as the next gal.

Except…

Except for the fact that I ALREADY PRINTED OUR INVITATIONS WITH THE OTHER HOTEL ON IT.

Oh. Lord.

Now, my mother tells me that this is not a problem. She says we can call all the relatives that would be staying in a hotel and tell them where we’re all going to be. However. I really want the invitations to be accurate, and it seems kind of tacky to be calling people to correct information that should be printed correctly on the invitation to begin with.

To me, a lot of the fun is running into your family members in the hotel, and I don’t want half of them to be in a different hotel, just because they don’t have the info for the correct hotel printed in front of them. So I went to my invitations and checked to see how hard it would be to pull one of the printed panels off and replace it with a new one. As it turns out, it wasn’t that difficult. A lot of wasted paper, yes, but not that big of a deal. I took care of it tonight, and it only took me one episode of Breaking Bad and one episode of Law and Order: SVU. I still think I’m glad that I did them early, but lordy, now I’m wondering what else will need to be changed.

Did any of you finish a project, only to learn later that something needed to be changed?

Miss Cream Puff~ I’m totally with you about staying at the same hotel as your family and guests. A huge part of the reason I wanted to have a destination wedding was so I could actually hang-out with my guests. I imagined running into each other at the restaurants, lobby and pools and just having a grand old time.

I’m glad it wasn’t hard for you to change your invites though.

YES! on our invites we put fi, son of mr. and mrs. blah. Then we remembered that FIs last name is different then his mothers. We didnt notice the mistake on the invite until checks came in and we couldnt cash them cause of the wrong name!

Haha, is your family from the East Coast or the South?? I love seeing the shivering tourists wandering around SF in the summer in shorts and a t-shirt or in shorts and one of those fleece sweatshirts you can buy down at Fisherman’s Wharf that say SF on them. If your uncle and dad think they’re going to need air conditioning in an SF August and pack accordingly, they are going to FREEZE. I’ve found that I can’t emphasize that enough when friends visit from the East Coast. Our. Summers. Are. Cold.

I waited longer than I wanted to do the invitations because I wasn’t quite sure what time the ceremony would actually happen. It was driving me crazy because no one would confirm that the time I had picked was ok. They would just say things like, “That will probably work.” PROBABLY?!

I agree, having all your relatives at the hotel is fun! I loved going down for breakfast on the morning of my wedding and running into a tableload of aunts/uncles/cousins! It was great!

And I printed a 5pm ceremony start time on my invitations, and later wished that I had put 5:30. But I just rolled with it… turns out 5:30 would have been better. The sun was setting and was shining RIGHT into Mr.E’s eyes so he was squinting through the entire ceremony. 5:30 would have left us with less squinty pictures and less shadow. Ah well…

I had to reorder the RSVP cards cause I forgot to put accepts/declines on it!

Sara says:

Is there some reason that your uncle couldn’t stay at a different hotel instead of making you and all your other guests change their reservations?

air conditioning? in san francisco? don’t they know that’s an oxymoron? lol. sorry that has become such a fuss. especially for something that’s not even going to be needed considering that they would be outside enjoying the sights and sounds at the most likely time that AC would be needed. lol, you handled it very well though. congrats.

I printed the hotel info and cut the accommodation cards for the invitations and now the hotel is sold out and the room block booked solid so now onto another hotel and more cutting cards!

Jay–interestingly enough, my parents are from California, but my uncle is from Chicago! Although, he’s spent enough time in SF to know better, I think.

Sara–the issue wasn’t so much my uncle as it was my dad. I think my uncle would have stayed at a different hotel, but my dad was concerned about the air conditioning as well. He has a sleep disorder and is totally paranoid that he’ll be exhausted during the wedding (which I totally understand) so he wants to be able to control as many factors as possible (which I also understand). Apparently air conditioning is one of those factors. Thus, we moved. :-/ Oh well!

It sounds like other people had mistakes to fix, too!

Linda–I have to reprint my RSVPs, too, because I put the wrong date on them! Oops.
