About Mrs. Hummingbird

Funny Ha-Ha

March 11th, 2008 @ 4:46 pm by Mrs. Hummingbird

As much as men might scoff when a woman says she looks for “a good sense of humour” in a partner, for me, this was absolutely a necessity. I love to laugh and make ridiculous jokes and I’ve always liked people who could do the same.

Although there are many reasons I love Mr. Hummingbird, one of the first things that attracted me to him was his ability to make and take a joke. On our first date, not only did the conversation flow freely, but we made many a silly and sarcastic crack.

Over the years, as a couple, we’ve had many a laugh and shared many a funny moment together, so the idea of having a wedding without a single giggle or joke seemed way too weird to me.

I realize that it is an important day in our lives, but I’ve never felt like starching the fun out of it by standing unwaveringly on ceremony. It’s not the way to go for us, especially considering what we’re like in real life.

So we started talking about adding some of our silly little jokes to the ceremony and/or reception and while some have been shot down (my suggestion to put up a MST3K inspired “Watch out for snakes!” sign was nixed since it could inspire fear at an outdoor ceremony), others have already been incorporated into our plans, such as including one of my favourite Flight of the Conchords songs on our playlist.

So as a lover of all things fun and silly, I want to know - what little jokes/unconventional personal touches are you and your significant other adding to you big day?

As a Tuesday Treat, my favourite FOTC song. Makes me laugh every time.

We actually had to notify the photographer that “if someone’s doing a crossword puzzle during the ceremony, that’s a photo op.” The program included a puzzle filled by the groom and clued by the bride. Now that’s personalized!

Ah, a woman after my own heart - we’re also putting a few FOTC songs in our playlist (we’re also going the iTunes route) because they are HILARIOUS. I really want “Boom King” to be played at some point in the evening; he wants “Inner City Pressure” and I’m trying to veto it but it might make its way in since we’re having an NYC wedding.

And I’m with you - I needed someone who could ALWAYS make me laugh (and indeed he does!)

We had a Love Story done through our videographer, and it displayed our sense of humor pretty well. One line in particular had the who room in fits.

Oh, and then there was the man’s prayer. Fans of Red Green will know this one…

“I’m a man, but I can change, if I have to, I guess.”

My guy stood up in front of everyone and asked all the men to repeat after him. It was awesome! The few in the crowd who knew the show were busting up laughing and those who didn’t weren’t far behind.

And there was the caricature artist which completely represented our cheesy, kid-like idea of fun.

I totally agree with you about the humor part of a relationship. What would life be without laughter? Some of my favorite weddings that we have been to have humor incorporated into the ceremony.

My FI and I are huge FOTC fans! We are constantly singing “its business time” to each other!

FOTC rocks. I also love my FI’s sense of humor, although it can be really annoying when he cracks me up while I’m trying to be mad at him. I expect that most of our jokes will be spontaneous. But we are both big DMB fans, and already the words “dixie chicken” and “tennessee lamb” are appearing everywhere (including on the cake…) Somehow other DMB song lyrics have crept onto favor labels and tags. Most people will just think we are crazy, but a few good friends will get it. We actually don’t care, as long as it makes us smile.

[...] and senses of humour of their guests. After all, we have some very funny friends and we are already doing things to incorporate our sense of humour into the day, so why not do something interesting with this? We can get people involved and we can let them know [...]
