Spenders vs. Savers

March 11th, 2008 @ 11:33 am by Mrs. Toucan

We had a little discussion over in the BeeTV chatroom the other day about our spending habits and our significant other’s spending habits. Mr. Toucan is definitely a saver, while I on the other hand, am not. If shopping was a sport, I’d be on the varsity squad. I have a hard time saying ‘no’ to good deals, and have a particular weakness toward dresses and shoes.

Spenders vs. Savers : wedding money Spendersaver

Since we’ve been engaged, however, I’ve noticed (and Mr. T has noticed!) that my spending ways has been a little more under control. I’m not sure whether me saving more is attributable to saving for the wedding, Mr. Toucan’s influence on me, or me just growing up. My guess is that it is probably some combination of the three.

What are your spending habits like? Are you and your significant other spenders or a savers? Have your spending habits changed because of your wedding or because of your significant other’s influence?

We’re both spenders– it’s kind of bad actually. We both love nice things, nice dinners out, vacations, etc. He’s good about reining us when we need to, but I wish one of us was a little more conservative.

I’m in the same boat as you. I used to be a big spender, but since I’ve been w/ Mr. H, his saving ways have caught on with me.

Where did you find those cute shoes!?

Heh…I guess that’s my answer! After moving into my own home, I watched my spending more carefully but since my FI has moved in, I’ve been on a bit of a spree. Maybe it’s stress related? ;D

My parents are paying for half of the wedding, but we are paying for the other half. Saving is KILLING me. I miss spending! Luckily the FI is a saver:) One of us has to be!

we’re both savers though we do have our occasional spending benders. lol. but luckily we’re also both deal hunters as well [like out latest score logitech webcams for 9 bucks after rebate!] so it all works out.

I tend to be more of a spender and he’s more of a saver… usually. He tends to be more of a “splurger”, he’ll buy big things on an impulse whereas I’m apt to buy a new purse or shoes. But I too have reformed and I’m a bit more frugal now with the cost of the wedding and of buying a house in the next few years.

Agent

I actually just had a discussion with a friend about this topic. Mr. Agent is a great saver (with tiny occasional spending) and I’m a great spender (with a tiny occasional saving). I’ve got a total weakness for shoes and I’m soooo proud I haven’t bought a pair since I purchased the ones for the wedding. I was so excited I could actually buy a pair that it took me forever to decide. I wish I hadn’t spent so much on the dress though (even though I do love it) but I had made that decision before his spending habits began to rub off on me. I was VERY proud that I managed to buy my veil and the main table centerpieces for cheap! I went around telling everyone how little I spent on them instead of how much I spent on the dress. I guess I’ve kinda grown up too…looking more for the future rather than how good those shoes would look with that dress right now. Hopefully his habits will stick!

Hey big spender! Yeah, that’s me! My excuse is, it’s for the wedding….and I’ll resell it later on Weddingbee! I dunno how much of that he believes, but short of buying a yacht to sail into our wedding with, FI has allowed me free reign! Hee hee, if he only knew! =)

Just like you, I’m a spender and my fiancé is a saver. Just like you, I’ve joined him on the saving side since getting engaged :)

I’m a spender, but two things have reigned me in: joint finances, and the need to pare down so we can move.

I think I am still a bit spendy, but he thinks I don’t shop that much. I guess we’ve hit the sweet spot. ;)

Very similar to you… I’m the spender, he’s the saver. I used the wedding to justify my spending ways, but since we bought a house, I’ve really had to reign it in. I’m a reformed spender now. ;)

I guess I’m in the minority–I’m definitely the saver. I had to teach my Mr. about why it’s good to eliminate credit card debt and save for retirement (in addition to saving for a ring for me and our honeymoon!). Now we’re both savers and he’s so happy he’s debt-free and it puts us on the right track for our lives together!

We save. Almost comedically. When his computer started to die recently, we looked at the bank account to make sure we could afford a new one, and literally snorted.

When we moved in together, our combined rent/mortgage went down by nearly 66%, and the rest of our spending stayed the same. That extra $1200 a month that you don’t realize you have adds up absurdly quickly.
