About Mrs. Cream Puff

I Love Me A Sammich.

March 12th, 2008 @ 2:10 pm by Mrs. Cream Puff

When I first started planning this wedding, I knew one thing for sure about our tables–they would have names, not numbers. Originally, I really loved the idea of having each table named after a neighborhood in San Francisco. Then I realized (after being on the knot for like, 3 seconds) that this idea isn’t exactly original. I also really liked the idea of having photos of our pets, or postcards from places we’d visited. When I came up with the idea to do a drawing for each table, I was then forced to figure out how the heck to display them. I went through many different ideas (some of them pictured below), but was really satisfied with myself when I came up with my final idea. That’s how I knew it was the final idea.

When I told my manager at Paper Source what my plans were, she told me I was insane. I guess she thought they’d be a lot of work. I’ll admit, these were one of my more involved projects. But they really weren’t that bad! Probably about 4 or 5 episodes of Law and Order. So without further adieu, here they are (please excuse the laundry basket–I had other things going on, haha):

There’s 15 of those suckers, darlings (two extra, just in case we DO end up with 150 guests–I don’t want to be making more of these two weeks before the wedding). They’re multi-colored sandwich boards made with bookboard, text weight paper and bookcloth (that’s the light blue stuff on the top). The bottom parts are held together with ribbon to keep them from falling flat. They obviously don’t have the drawings on them yet, but I’m going to hold off on those for awhile. I wanted to show you guys what I’d done, because this project will probably look like this for a few months to come. :)

Before I settled on the sandwich board idea, I rejected several FAR easier ideas. They included (but were not limited to):

1) These table tents from Paper Source, which were rejected for not being colorful enough:

2) The drawings, printed on plain cardstock and presented in something like this (I’m a schmuck, I don’t remember where I got this!):

presidio-tabe-card.jpg

These were rejected because I want the drawings to be big enough to see, and I was afraid they’d fall over if they were any bigger than this little card shown here.

3) These awesome 3-sided lantern things, from knottie abattyref:

These were rejected because I didn’t know what else to put on them! I’m not doing a menu. Also, I was concerned that they would be too bulky on the tables. In reality, I think my sandwich boards will be pretty bulky themselves. Oh well. The flowers will have to move over to make room for them, I guess. ;)

Anybody else got some creative table number ideas?

I had a big-n-crafty table number idea that fell by the wayside as the wedding neared. The planned photomosaic of a number, made up of pictures of said number, became just three photos of numbers, printed on plain white cardstock folded brochure-style. They were big enough that people could find their tables, but not so big that they took up space or prevented conversation.
On the inside, we printed the answers to a puzzle that had been printed in the program.

They could easily have been prettied-up with better paper, maybe a ribbon or a decorative edge, etc. At that point, I had ceased to care.

It was fun taking the number pictures, though. One of the three photos on every table was a chapter heading from one of the groom’s math textbooks.

off-topic: I love that you measure your diy projects by L&O episodes!

I am printing my table numbers as wine-labels - so the dinner wine does double duty. I stole that idea off Martha Stewart so I’m sure a lot of others are doing it also… oh well.

You are too cool for school, Miss C. Were doing the boring names of cities in Mr Peng’s hometown thing. Even though the “neigborhoods of SF” thing is unoriginal, i still think its a super schweet idea.

Or…holy crap…you could actually put NUMBERS :) Surprisingly, we are seeing less and less of plain ole numbers, arent we?

Those look fantastic! Are you willing to go into a bit more detail about how you actually assembled them?

Ours were different engagement photos on each table with a number put on the photo in Photoshop. I really didn’t want to do numbers because it’s so hierarchical but it seemed like it would be too busy to have both a picture and a theme name. As it turns out none of the parents wanted to be anywhere near the DJ so all the highest numbered tables didn’t even go to family.

If we hadn’t done that I think the tables would have been named after different places we’d visited together and I would have had a photo of us from each.

Yours are going to look so fabulous!

Since our wedding was at Lake Tahoe, we named each of our tables after Ski Resorts around the area. To tie this together with the place cards, I made ski lift tickets for each of the guests to show which table they’re sitting at.

BTW - I love L&O also!!!

we’re naming the tables after our favorite poets and putting a poem from each poet on the table. I think I finally figured out how I’m gonna do this - print poet name on one paper and the poem on another, and then glue the backs of those papers to cardstock so the printed papers look framed w/ the cardstock (I so don’t know DIY talk!). More info my bio as this progresses…

Thanks for the compliments, guys! I totally measure all of my projects in terms of how many TV shows I get through. And since L&O is on all the time and I LOVE IT, it’s usually L&O. hahaha!

katy–they are. :-/ haha. Although, I have to say this project was relatively inexpensive, even without the discount. More info later!

julieulie–I absolutely will do a tutorial for you guys! No problem!
