Important Wedding Research

March 12th, 2008 @ 8:25 am by Mrs. Tiramisu

You know how you decide on silly little details long before you ever think about big important ones? Or is that just me?
Well one of my must-have details was the signature drink. I was introduced to the idea at one of my friend’s (and bridesmaid’s) wedding last September. I helped her come up with her signature drinks and the names- a delightful little pink bellini which we dubbed the Blushing Bride, and a cappuccino martini named the Grinning Groom. Cute, no?

With the color scheme decided, it was an easy decision for me to pick the “Wild Maine Blueberry Martini”! Mr. Tiramisu loved the idea too, but asked why did I get to have all of the fun? He wanted his home state represented too, and so our second signature drink was born, a favorite of his after his Wednesday night sailing races in Annapolis - the Dark and Stormy. The Dark and Stormy actually comes from Bermuda, but who’s going to complain about free alcohol? It’s easily made with dark rum and ginger beer (a lot like root beer), and is quite delicious.

Unlike his easy pick, there are many recipes for the Blueberry Martini, and I was determined to find the perfect one! I enlisted the help of my friend Kate, another bride-to-be, who understood the importance of our task. I hit up the liquor store, purchasing vodka, blueberry vodka, cranberry juice, sprite, club soda, and Stirrings Wild Blueberry Martini Cocktail Mixer. I of course charged the purchase to our wedding-dedicated credit card, because I am famous for my purchase-justifying skills!

Once we had all the supplies, Kate and I mixed up five different variations on the Blueberry Martini, and even subjected her fiance, Dante, to a blind taste test.

At first glance I was disappointed in how un-blue the martinis came out. They did taste just like wild Maine blueberries though, and that was most important. I think I’ll add stirrers with a few blueberries on them, and if I’m feeling ambitious, maybe even some blue sugar around the rim. Here’s a picture of Kate and me with the winning recipe:

Here is Dante trying to look manly while enjoying his martini:
Wouldn’t you know it though, Dante thought he could out-martini Kate and me. He tried his hand at the perfect recipe, and then we had a head-to-head competition between our winning drink and his. We all had to admit his was better!
So here it is, the scientifically tested, perfect blueberry martini:

1.75 parts Smirnoff Blueberry vodka
1 part Stirrings Wild Blueberry Martini mixer
.5 parts water
splash cranberry juice
splash club soda

So thanks, Kate and Dante! And if you need any help with your signature cocktail recipes for your wedding next February, I’d be glad to subject myself to the experimenting!

oh, the torturous chores brides must do, right?

I know what you mean about the details, though: My FI & have totally come to conclusions on random details of our wedding–and still haven’t nailed down the major ones (like, you know, the actual reception venue!)

Sounds tasty! Maybe add a bit of Curacao to your concoction for a beautiful blue hue.

This is a flashback to the competitive cranberry margarita testing my husband’s family did the week leading up to the wedding. Every day at dinner we had to try at least two…whichever won moved on to the next round the next day. Rinse and repeat.

I had to laugh at the first sentence on your blog– the details are just so much more fun than the big stuff. I had a moment last week where I realized I had the leaf motif for the reception tables all picked, yet we didn’t have an officiant to marry us. Ahh, priorities.

Can there be a wiki posting on specialty drinks with sections for “old, new, borrowed, blue”, color schemes, blushing brids/great groom, etc? I think this would be so fun to read and add too, plus would spark my mind!!
