The World Of Color…

…on my nails and on my toes…

I really like these two sets of nails… what do you think??? Nice, Yeah???? pleased024

Okay, so they’re not my style. shocked027

With spring coming along soon, e-pics, the wedding, and my toes coming out of Ugg boot hibernation, it’s about time to start thinking of some nail color. Classic vs Blast of Color.

I’m thinking a french manicure for both the hands and the toes for the wedding day. Better to be clean and classic so it won’t take away from the millions of details I’m sure I’ll want pictures of like the bouquet, or our rings.

I ended up going back to my original love, Grace “Crystal” for my wedding shoes.

I started shopping for colorful nail polish for the e-pics, but it’s not working in my crapilicious state, so I’ve mostly been in black polish goodness.

Should I go for a french manicure and pedicure? French manicured nails and color on the toes? Or color on both hands and toes? I have a tendency to stay with really safe colors - I want bold but I’m afraid I’ll look back at pictures and be like WHOA!

I was looking at Opi’s Nail colors online and they have this pretty cool feature where you can pick the color tone of your hand and then try on their hundreds of colors at their Try it on Studio. The computer generated colors aren’t true to what it’ll really look, but it gives you a general idea:

And they have tons of new colors in their India collection that looks fabulous!

How abouts you gals? What kind/color of nail polish did you favor for yourself?

French manicures can be nice and classic, but French pedicures just seem dirty to me. Toes look much nicer natural or with some color on the nails.

JangerToBe says:

I’ll probably just do a soft pink polish on the fingernails and maybe a brighter pink on the toes. I’m a classic gal bordering dangerously on boring.

Mrs. Petunia says:

I had ideas about getting blue nail polish on my toes to have something blue…but then something else became my something blue, suprisingly, so I just went with pink!

And you know what? On my hands, I just decided to get the heck buffed out of my nails and used no nail polish. I think I realized that every single time I get a French manicure I ruin it immediately, and I thought, better safe! But if you are patient, unlike me, I don’t think you can go wrong with a French manicure. I’m just really particular about the white line not being too thick (oh, and actually, I prefer an American manicure: the white is less harsh, in my opinion…)

Mrs. Petunia, what is an American manicure?

mhb says:

You crack me up! I think you should just go with the ideas you have in those first two pictures…

I got a French manicure on my hands… and my BMs and I had a pedicure party two days before the wedding where we painted our own toenails. My toes were sparkly… but my shoes were closed-toe, so I have no regrets. :-)

Natalie says:

Get a french manicure and a bright fun pedicure (like the OPI ones you showed above). Your dress is long and will be covering your toes for the most part, so it will not be too obvious.

Miss Toucan says:

I’m a dark nail polish kinda gal (in fact, I’m wearing Black Cherry Chutney from the new India line, right now!). However, for the wedding, I’ll probably go a little more classic. I hear the more natural pale colors make your fingers look longer (I don’t know if I believe that though).

I’m personally not a fan of French manicures (or pedis), so I think I’ll do a pale pink on the hands, and a dark pink on the toes!

Linda says:

I cannot decide what color to wear on my toes. I’m wearing blue sandals. I can’t decide!

may31 says:

personally i don’t like french manicures ever- so i vote something neutral on the hands and a color on the toes. or (my personal favorite) buffed fingernails and color on the toes. no need to worry about chipping!

I’m with Amanda–I hate french pedicures. I think they make your nails look longer, which is great on your hands but weird on your toes. I’m doing a french manicure and “Nomad’s Dream” from the OPI line for my toes. It’s a pinky/peachy hue that’s surprisingly neutral.

katiethelady says:

french pedicures make your toenails look really long, which kinda freaks me out.

beanchar says:

Another “no” vote for French pedicures, here. They usually end up looking weird– like in the picture above where the toes look like little fat fingers (IMO). Ack!

If you go with the French manicure, I’d definitely follow my girl Petunia’s advice and have it done “American style” so the white is subtle and looks like your natural nail, only better. And then you can either choose a “natural” shade to match the non-white part of the manicure OR go with a fun pink to match your wedding color.

If you are worried about the manicure lasting, you could get gel nails, but remember they are HELL on you natural nails, so be prepared to look like a neurotic nail biter for about 3 months as your nails recover. beanchar speaks from experience on this, but it was worth it to have gorgeous nails for three weeks for wedding/h-moon.

I have heard that there’s a new gel technique that is less harmful and VERY thin– like 3-coats of polish thin. It’s only available in big cities, but I’d bet San Fran is one of them.

Miss Penguin says:

I prefer the chewed up cuticle look :) Muahah.

I never wear fingernail polish (but my toes are always manicured) but for the wedding I’ll probably find an uber-sheer sparkly pink. I love french manicures the most but my nails are so thin that the day after I get them done they already start to peel :( I dont want to get fake nails although if they could make fake nails look like real nails (IE, not so thick) i’d probably go that route!

14.
KatyStardust says:

Miss Penguin - I feel the same way about fake nails!! I have been taking lots of vitamins to get my nails strong, but well, sometimes that just doesn’t work so well. So I asked my manicurist and we decided to try putting a few thin coats of Gel on my nails to keep them strong.

You can see pictures on the blog here: http://katystardust.blogspot.com

They look pretty nice, but not too fake and they’re technically my natural nails! They’ve made my French manicure last soooo much longer.

shanks for all the advice ladies.

forgot to mention that when i was talking about the french manicure, i wanted to get gel or silk wraps for those for my hands =)

maggie says:

I like sheer neutrals on the fingers (similar to an American) and bright, fun colors on the toesies. My toes are currently a classic OPI red: I’m Not Really a Waitress, and I also like burgundies, hot pinks, corals and dark dark colors depending on the season.

Have fun with it!

17.
Red says:

I vote for french manicure fingers and a fun color on the toes :-)

I, personally, hate the feel of acrylic or any other thick nail treatments but I was actually glad I did get my french manicure in acrylic because I was doing so many last minute touch-ups the day before, a reg manicure would have been destroyed long before the actual wedding.

Miss Lovebug says:

I’m addicted to “Pink Glove Service” by Essie. It’s a slightly-tinted, mostly sheer pink I wear all year round. For my toes, though, I’m going platinum baby! (For some reason, I just like the way metallic polishes look on my toes..)

19.
Kris says:

I have acrylic on my nails, but no tips. I keep them as short as possible, and only use the acrylic to protect my super thin natural nails. I LOVE them and the best part is that the polish lasts the whole 2 weeks until my next fill (you do have to be semi-careful not to break them, but if you do, a little touch up glue usually fixes it). I always wear OPI’s No Bees Please, which is a really nice, pale pink that I think will look good for my wedding.

sarahblueeyes23 says:

i have the same shoes!!

I think i’m either going to do a pale shade of pink on my hands, maybe a french… but probbaly not. I don’t want it to have the “fake nail” look (i just think its going to loook SO 10 years ago - in 10 years).

For my toes - I love RED! and i REALLY want to have red toenails…. but I’m not sure - I am not a huge fan of pale pink o my toes… So either a darker pink or dark Red(if i’m feeling brave!)

angel van says:

i would have to be in the no group to when it comes to french manicure. my go to color when i get my nails done are opi hawaiian orchid.

22.
Meli says:

I love your shoes…they were one of my top 3!

I have gels all the time as they keep my nails strong and neat looking. I wear the color Essie Madamoiselle everyday. They are so natural looking and “like you are getting married everyday” as my manicurist says.

23.
Jennifer says:

I find that I ruin painted-on tips on my fingernails almost immediately, so if I want them to stay, I usually go for gels or acrylic, which can have the color built into the material. As far as toes go, I vote for a fun color.

24.
Jennifer says:

I looked at your site and think the french mani looks great on your hands! But I’m so glad I’m not the only poster that *HATES* the french pedi– to me that style just looks like the toenails are in horrible need of a trim. Love the idea of a light pink or even a light blue!

25.
CharlestonBride says:

I too am a fan of the french, but I’ve read a few articles on “how to look good in pictures” and a neutral color that is close to your skin tone is recommended. According to the articles, the contrast could become a focal point in black & whites. Not sure if it’s true since I know nothing about photography, but it’s made me decide to go with a sheer pink!

26.
LittleMissBride says:

I love french manicures too, and will most likely go with that. I recently bought OPI’s “I’ll take the cake!” polish from their wedding collection, and I love the soft subtle pink color it gives my nails. So that’s definitely an option too. But may I suggest doing a trial run either way, to see how the colors actually look on? :)

27.
bean says:

you can do whatever you want with your manicure as long as you don’t get a french pedicure. toenails should not be long enough to have white parts.
