About Mrs. Cherry Blossom

A La Minister… A La Friend…

March 17th, 2008 @ 11:55 am by Mrs. Cherry Blossom

Thanks to Mrs. Eggplant’s post about making an appointment online to get our marriage license, we took care of that with the quickness and no hassle. For San Francisco, it’s $89 for the marriage license and $5 for the convenience fee to make an appointment online. So prior to leaving for my “Girls Gone Wild” in Vegas weekend, Mr. CB and I are gonna get semi-ficial with our nuptials. Now that’s done, what’s next? Our officiant.

We’re really honored that our friend accepted being such a big part of our wedding, and we couldn’t be happier because he was the only person we knew that we wanted to officiate us. Now getting him ordained was starting to prick my brain. I wasn’t sure which online ordaining sites were legit and what the process was, and the last thing I wanted to deal with was to not be officially married after going through with the big SHAbang.

So BAM! I found that you could go through the City of County Clerk and do a One Day Deputization! Can’t get more legit and less worrisome than that yeah?

Are you having a family member or friend perform your ceremony? How did they become ordained? Or anyone have personal experience with the one day deputization?

We did the one-day deputy thing as well, and it was really simple and convenient. We had a family friend marry us, and she was so touched that we’d asked that she enrolled in a Toastmasters class so she’d get extra-comfortable with public speaking!

We’re having a friend officiate– and she’s not ordained. But she doesn’t need to be. We’re getting married in Montana, where anyone can marry you!

Actually, we’re going to do the wedding twice (with this in mind)… once during the week prior while backpacking with friends and once at the actual ceremony, where we will make it official.

My sister officiated. I believe she went through two years of Seminary at Princeton Theological Seminary plus her ordination exams. :)

We had a friend get ordained online (through Rose Ministry) and everything went great! All they had to do was put their information in and it was done! I too was nervous that it wouldn’t be legit….to good to be true….but it was! We have our marriage liscence and everything was so easy! Having our friend perform the ceremony was the best idea we had! Everything was so personal!

There’s no such a thing in WA. But I heard you can get ordained online and it’s legal here. — I read through many pages of the court documents between universal life church and state of washington. This is the route I want to go through but my fiance feels icky about it.

Mrs. Corn- your comment makes me smile!
Our officiants (yes, plural) are all ordained (by bishops, after 3 or 4 yrs of seminary!) clergy…
but they are also all good friends/mentors/pastors to my FH and I–I’m so glad they are people we know well!

If you have a friend commissioned for the day to marry you– what exactly do they have to say? We were thinking about having our bridal party all perform parts of the ceremony– but have one person be commissioned and sign the marriage license etc…

Were there specific restrictions on what the person *had* to say in order for it to be official?

(I’m in San Diego County).

Our good friend got ordained online through the Universal Life Church for free. Two of our friends got married about 4 years ago and the bride’s BFF went through the same process and their marriage is legal and everything :) We’re in OC, California, but our wedding will be in LA county. From what I’ve read, there doesn’t seem to be anything wrong/not official about it.

Orange County (CA) does not recognize marriage by a ‘deputy for a day’ - it may be the only county in CA that doesn’t - grrr. We tried going through another county, but all of them require that either the bride, groom or person applying to be the deputy commissioner must live in that county (sadly all 3 of us live in OC). Plan B - we are now having our friend get ordained online through Universal Life Church.

Miss CB - You could pay $112 for a one-day deputization or get a ULC ordination for FREE. It’s perfectly legal in SF, I did lots of research. I’m doing it in Napa!

So i’m wondering if it’d be possible just to get yourself (as the bride) ordained, and perform your own ceremony? Would that be legal? we live in L.A. county and we’re getting married in riverside county.

Do any of you are considering or have a friendd or family member who is considering becoming ordained online in order to officiate a wedding ceremony? I am interested in getting more information about this and would be interested in speaking with someone who is currently going through that same situation. If so, contact me at fashionfox83@yahoo.com or reply to this post!

@kate: I am sorry Kate, I do not know the answer to that one. I read the website for the sfgov. org but it has no mention of ordaining yourself. I would be curious to know how that went for you.

@Ashely: Hi - if you read Mrs. Penguin’s post, you can learn more about how her friend’s mom got ordained online for her wedding: http://www.weddingbee.com/2008/01/07/ordained-ministers/
