To be honest, I haven’t even mentioned about six other spots that the Tiramisus visited and ruled out. We were starting to get a little overwhelmed with all of the possibilities, and with all of the prices. We made the mistake of starting the search before we really established any sort of budget. The wedding planning had just begun and already we were resigning ourselves to spending a lot more than we wanted at one of these locations which was a lot less than perfect.
Sad little Tiramisus, feeling bad for ourselves, headed to dinner with my dad and step-mom the night before we were to leave Maine. Over dinner, my step-mom happened to mention that one of her friends had been raving about a wedding she attended in the Kennebunkport area, the summer before. Let me guess, I said, we must have visited it- was it at the “$30,000 minimum hotel”? or maybe the “Early-bird special only hotel”? no no, it must have been the “perfect but way too small hotel?” Wedding frustration + usual Miss Tiramisu sarcasm wasn’t a good combination, clearly.
No, none of those, she said. The wedding had been held at a private home. A beautiful old historic manor. With a big lawn *right* on the ocean. That was available to rent. Too. Good. To. Be. True!
We rushed home and onto the internet. Surely this perfect little spot must be online somewhere. I was so anxious to get there and reserve it before some other bride scooped it up I could barely stand it. We couldn’t find a thing. I’m not sure why I thought a private home would be easily found on the internet. We weren’t discouraged. We knew the approximate location, surely we could just drive around until we located it, pull up to the house, knock on the door, and be welcomed into our perfect wedding location with open arms, right?
Well. Actually that’s exactly what happened
The following morning we packed up the car to head back to Maryland, with one very important stop in mind. It took us a little longer to find than in my fantasy, driving down some dead end private roads, pulling into some strange driveways, and getting a little lost along the way. But eventually we found it, and wouldn’t you know, there was another bride there ahead of us, who had stalked the place in the same way we had! The owner laughed, showed us around, and gave us all the info we needed.
A private home, located on a beautiful point of land, facing a famous and historic Maine lighthouse. The lawn is perfect for setting up a tent, the porch couldn’t be better for hosting an outdoor cocktail hour, and there are small paths that our guests can use to walk down onto the private beach. The home itself is for rent too, with ten bedrooms which were just bursting with character. The owner was nothing short of awesome, telling us he rents his home out just one weekend per month to help with taxes, and also because he “loves a good party”. He said we could do whatever we wanted, he had very few rules, and that he’d stay out of our way for the most part, unless we needed help of course. He wrote his phone number on the back of an envelope and said to call if we decided we liked it.
I called him from the car ten minutes after we left.
