About Mrs. Tiramisu

Part I
Part II

To be honest, I haven’t even mentioned about six other spots that the Tiramisus visited and ruled out. We were starting to get a little overwhelmed with all of the possibilities, and with all of the prices. We made the mistake of starting the search before we really established any sort of budget. The wedding planning had just begun and already we were resigning ourselves to spending a lot more than we wanted at one of these locations which was a lot less than perfect.

Sad little Tiramisus, feeling bad for ourselves, headed to dinner with my dad and step-mom the night before we were to leave Maine. Over dinner, my step-mom happened to mention that one of her friends had been raving about a wedding she attended in the Kennebunkport area, the summer before. Let me guess, I said, we must have visited it- was it at the “$30,000 minimum hotel”? or maybe the “Early-bird special only hotel”? no no, it must have been the “perfect but way too small hotel?” Wedding frustration + usual Miss Tiramisu sarcasm wasn’t a good combination, clearly.

No, none of those, she said. The wedding had been held at a private home. A beautiful old historic manor. With a big lawn *right* on the ocean. That was available to rent. Too. Good. To. Be. True!

We rushed home and onto the internet. Surely this perfect little spot must be online somewhere. I was so anxious to get there and reserve it before some other bride scooped it up I could barely stand it. We couldn’t find a thing. I’m not sure why I thought a private home would be easily found on the internet. We weren’t discouraged. We knew the approximate location, surely we could just drive around until we located it, pull up to the house, knock on the door, and be welcomed into our perfect wedding location with open arms, right?

Well. Actually that’s exactly what happened :)

The following morning we packed up the car to head back to Maryland, with one very important stop in mind. It took us a little longer to find than in my fantasy, driving down some dead end private roads, pulling into some strange driveways, and getting a little lost along the way. But eventually we found it, and wouldn’t you know, there was another bride there ahead of us, who had stalked the place in the same way we had! The owner laughed, showed us around, and gave us all the info we needed.

A private home, located on a beautiful point of land, facing a famous and historic Maine lighthouse. The lawn is perfect for setting up a tent, the porch couldn’t be better for hosting an outdoor cocktail hour, and there are small paths that our guests can use to walk down onto the private beach. The home itself is for rent too, with ten bedrooms which were just bursting with character. The owner was nothing short of awesome, telling us he rents his home out just one weekend per month to help with taxes, and also because he “loves a good party”. He said we could do whatever we wanted, he had very few rules, and that he’d stay out of our way for the most part, unless we needed help of course. He wrote his phone number on the back of an envelope and said to call if we decided we liked it.

I called him from the car ten minutes after we left.

The location looks very gorgeous! We will be having a tent for our wedding in late August, 2008. Be careful of all the “a la carte” you’ll have to do on the rental items. We thought this would be less expensive and it turns out we would have saved over $5k if we simply had the wedding at an event center/hotel, etc.

Awww Tiramisu.. that place is perfection. The story of how you happened upon it is serendipitous (sp?). I was smiling so hard reading your account and that you found a divine wedding location. Congrats!

Congratulations! I had my reception in the large backyard of a private Victorian home. I also agree with ms opie, the little rental costs can escalate. Luckily, my caterer provided plates, utensils, glasses and I just rented chairs, table and the tent.

You know, our backyard wedding worked so well, and the homeowners rent the house out most of the year anyway, I should suggest that they get into the wedding biz!

I’ve been looking for informaiton about the Grey Stone Manor and I stubbled upon your site looking for any informaiton I can find on the place! I just got engaged on 11/15/2008, and trying to locate a spot in Maine to get married - a co-worker suggested Grey Stone but i can’t find any info! We are on a budget (of course!) and I’m curious about what the owner charged you to rent for the weekend/prorperty for the day/evening of the event? Could you give me a rough estimate? I’m heading up to Maine in Saturday (my folks live up there) i just might get desperate and knock on this owners door as well! haha. Any help would be great!
