DIY’ing Your Makeup?

March 19th, 2008 @ 6:36 pm by Mrs. Cream Puff

I am incapable of DIY’ing some things. I really am. I am too much of a stress case to DIY anything time-sensitive. Thus, I will not be DIY’ing my own flowers, nor will I be DIY’ing my own makeup. However, I use a couple of products on a daily basis that help my makeup stay on all day. Every time I put on my makeup, I think, I should TELL people about these things, because they would be perfect for those of you who are planning to do your own makeup.

The first product is Laura Geller’s Spackle. It’s an “under make-up primer.” Put it on after your moisturizer, but before your foundation. After I use this stuff, my foundation, blush and bronzer stay on all day. My co-workers even commented on it.

The second product is for eyes. It’s made by Urban Decay and it’s called Eyeshadow Primer Potion. I used to use something similar by MAC, but this works way better. Not only do I no longer get those annoying creases from eyeshadow, but my eyeshadow and eyeliner stays put all day.

That’s all I know as far as applying make-up for your wedding day. I’m not really that great at applying it myself, which is why I won’t be doing it myself. However, I’d never heard of these products before a trip to Sephora last year, and so I thought I’d share. :)

Anyone else got any tips?

Good tips Stink…err, I mean…Miss Cream Puff!

My friend is doing my makeup and I need some of those products for the long lasting look. I will add those to my favorites on sephora.com…Sephora is my mothership!

Personally, I hate the Laura Geller Spackle, but primer in general is fantastic at keeping makeup on. If it’s not something you’ve used before, I suggest going to Sephora and trying one on one side of your face and another on the other, and seeing what you like best. I hate hate the feel of Spackle on my skin, but have been really happy with Smashbox primer, but I know lots of people who feel the opposite.

Also, the Urban Decay Primer Potion is great on lips as well to hold on lipstick! I use it every day for eyes and it works wonders, but it is even BETTER at keeping on lipstick!

Thank you so much! I will definitely be keeping up on comments for more tips. I’m DIY-ing my makeup, and I can barely do it on a normal basis:)

I really have been needing something to keep my foundation in place and to avoid creases at the end of the day from eye makeup. Thanks!!!

If you are desperate for a mascara that will not smudge under your eyes (and ALL mascara’s waterproof or not did for me) try Kiss Me Mascara, available at Sephora. It definitely isn’t something you would like if you like a lot of volume, but if you just want black lashes, well defined, give it a try.

Another great mascara is Too Faced Lash Injection- same concept as Kiss Me. Not sure if the price might be less on that. I think they have it on Sephora and Cosmetique.

So I’ve heard wonderful things about it but never tried it myself but …. model in a bottle. It is like hair spray for your face but doesn’t feel junky or anything or sticky like hair spray. I personally use the primer from bare minerals and don’t like it much, but will try model in a bottle next time.

Find it at http://www.modelinabottle.com

Having tried several brands of primer, I found that smashbox feels the silkiest.

I’ve never tried Spackle, but I’m a huge fan of Laura Mercier primer. Sometimes I even wear it w/out foundation because I love the glow it gives my skin. I tried Smashbox because I’d heard so many good things, but somehow it didn’t do it for me.

I use Lancome’s Ombre Perfecteur.. it’s a lot like the Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer as it completely prevents my eyeshadow from creasing. It also seems to brighten my eyes up a little so I love it. I wouldn’t wear eyeshadow without this!!

I have combination skin and break out easily from some moisturizers, etc. Is this spackle pretty good, is it oil free?

I use the Benefit FY…eye! eye primer and it is AWESOME!

I have fair skin and MAC eyeshadow colors I love are Satin Taupe and Naked Lunch. I get so many compliments them actually.

WB posts about makeup and the follow-up comments are always such treasure troves of information, especially for girls like me who are clueless about makeup! Thanks for starting the conversation Miss Cream Puff!

OMG! I have been telling everyone about the Urban Decay Eye Primer. It’s simply amazing!

As for primer on my face, I use Shu Uemura. It’s so light!

If you use the Urban Decay Primer Potion- make sure you’re getting the most of it! It seems like it doesn’t last long, because the shape of the bottle is not conducive to the applicator getting out all of the product- (if that makes sense.) See this video on youtube to see what I’m talking about- if you cut open the bottle you can save so much product and make it last so much longer!!

I love makeup! Although I’ve never used the Primer Potion, I’ve heard that many people have issues with the Urban Decay Primer Potion bottle. Instead, try the Too Faced Shadow Insurance. It comes in a great squeeze bottle that dispenses just the amount you need. It works GREAT and holds my shadow all day without creasing or fading on my oily lids. I also recommend Model in a Bottle- it held on my makeup all day and all night for my wedding. It might sting a little when you spray it on your face, but they recently came out with one for sensitive skin which might not sting as much. For mascara to stay on all day without smearing or flaking, try Clarins Double Fix’Mascara. It is a clear waterproofing gel that goes on top of your mascara. To take all of the heavy duty makeup off at the end of the day, try Make Up For Ever Sens’Eyes. It’s gentle on your eyes and takes off waterproof makeup without rubbing.

I really like my Smashbox Photo Finish Primer. I tried Laura Mercier, just because it’s so popular, but it didn’t do much for me. I think whatever you decide for, get a few different samples at Sephora first and see what works best for you.

wow i LOVE all these tips, as i will be doing DIY makeup for my day—so wonderful to hear from everyone. i have been hitting up makeup counters and sephora stores to try products out as much as possible. oh and one thing to note–sephora actually gives free bridal makeup consultations, you need to make an appt but they will do your makeup and suggest products and not pressure you to buy anything, at least in my experience. (even if i love something in the store i will not buy it without wearing it around the rest of the day to see what happens)
