Moving On To The Gents

March 19th, 2008 @ 8:32 am by Mrs. Cherry Blossom

We asked all the gents in the wedding and family party to save the date so that we could get them all taken care of once and for all in a day. Recently Men’s Wearhouse aka MW Tux bought over a lot of local tuxedo shops, so there are even more convenient locations available.

The easiest thing to do, so that your wedding party isn’t twiddling their thumbs while you pick your selection, is to do it ahead of time. Mr. CB and I went the night before, without an appointment, to pick out each group’s attire and get ourselves registered into the computer. That way all any of our groomsmen had to do was to go to ANY local MW Tux, give them our group number, and spend the next 15 mins getting measured and getting out the door. So at different times throughout the day, our guys got their shiet done! HI FIVE, one more check off the list.

For everyone, we went with a simple, single button tux with simple white shirt and tie.

For Mr. CB, we gots the Geometric Champagne

For the Groomsmen, we went with a Geometric Truffle to match the ladies
s136688
And for the pops and brothers, we gots them Geometric Silver

Save yourselves some money - if you rent 5 or more tuxes, the groom’s is free and it doesn’t have to be of equal value (ooh lala!). Do yourselves another huge favor - tell yo guys to sign up for the “Perfect Fit” program. That way you can save $20 per rental. BOO yah! And last but not least, just ask them what other promotions they might be offering.

Anyone else rent from MW Tux? How was your experience?

Our experience registering was MISERABLE. The guy was helping a couple before we got there, which was fine, but then he proceeded to help other people who got there after we did. Finally he got to us. He managed to mess up several things about our registration including my FI’s e-mail address, the GMs vests, and misspelling the names of one of the GMs. We were so frustrated, but with GMs all over the country, we didn’t have much of an option.

However, when I called the store to fix some of the things that the one guy messed up, they were extraordinarily helpful. And both my dad and brother had great experiences getting measured at another store. If I could remember the guy’s name who helped us, I would call up and complain about him since it seems that our experience registering was an anomaly.

We’ve (overall) had a mixed experience. They messed up some things on the data base, and service at some locations is definitely better than others, but since we have guys located in 4 states, we didn’t have much of an option.

A note- with 5+ renters, you can make any 1 tux the free one, which is what we did, since Mr. D bought his own.

We had a terrible experience. We went in feeling great and the lady there made us exceedingly uncomfortable. She was awkward and mumbled and seemed to have no idea how to fit my fiance in a good suit, nor did she really care to.

My guy put a suit on, and the pants were laughable (I actually accidently laughed out loud). The crotch of the pants were just above his knees and the pants had these huge pleats. I asked the lady two things: Is that the size you would fit him in for the wedding? (Answer: yes) and Do you have any pants without those pleats?!? (Answer: no) As a bonus, the suits to try on visibly had other people’s hair on them.

We ran out of there as soon as possible! Our next experience was wonderful! We went to Formally Modern Tuxedo, and the man that helped us knew every detail of how to fit and choose a suit and he had a great looking suit on. And, the salesman made us realize our expectations were realistic and tailored his help to our tastes. And, they have pleatless pants! My fiance looked so excellent in the more modern, better fitting tux style.

Best part: The prices were better than MW Tux!

HORRIBLE! They kept messing everything up. Ever time we went in, I would find something was wrong in the database. They would take forever to fix it, go over the information with us and then when we came back another time or when someone came in for a fitting, something else was wrong! I was so nervous that they would get everything mixed up on the day the tuxes were picked up but they finally got everything right. It was really stressful!

I want to use something like MW Tux because our groomsmen are spread out - but we want our GMs to wear suits, not tuxes. Does MW Tux carry suits? Does it make more sense to buy (instead of rent) a suit? Any other suit people?

MissV says:

Enmoore66, we’re doing suits too. Doesn’t really help if you’re spread out but what we’ve found is the the local shops tend to offer suits as well. We went with The Tux Shop/Mr. Formal which is a Pacific NW chain. You could always go w/ someone local and have the guys send in the measurements/pick them up when they get into town.

Our groomsmen are spread out as well. Instead of going the MW tux route, I asked them all to get measured. Look through one of the vendors on Ebay that sells tux overstocks or previous season’s tux, bid on all the sizes I needed. I got 5 Perry Ellis tuxes, vests, bow ties, shirts, pants, cuff links and studs for about $75 each. The tuxes came in a week later. They were all clean, pressed and perfect. Now I just have to pack them all up and send them off to the groomsmen and make sure to stay on their case about trying them on and if they need it alter, they will have enough time to find someone local to do it for them.

enmoore66 –

MW Tux does not do suits (we were thinking of them too). But, don’t worry about your gents being spread out around the country… mine were too.

It turns out that suit shops and tailors have an unspoken agreement that any man can walk into any shop and have his measurements taken complimentary.

So, our guys were given a form to fill out from our rental shop, and they need to just go to any suit/tailor shop in their neighborhood and then phone, fax, or go on the Web to submit their measurements.

I am also renting tuxes from MW. I had been warned before about some of their shortcomings. However, for the price and luxury of so many locations I decided it was worth it. They have already messed up a few times and over charged but as long as I stay on top of things I think it will be okay. Just make sure you double check everything they have down before the wedding. I may even make my FH go back and get another fitting.

I’m going to rent suits for our guys, too. I know that “Mr. Tux” rents suits.

We’ll probably go with mens wearhouse as well just because none of the groomsmen are in town either so its just a convenience thing. I want them to wear suits instead but its just much more complicated that way! High five #2 I like your picks!

Wow - it’s interesting that so many of you had such bad experiences. If you’re in the bay area, I recommend you getting your measurements or visiting the Stonestown Galleria location because Jesse the Store manager, and Joe the Asst. Store Mgr were both awesome and so friendly to work with. They were really knowledgable and extremely friendly with all of us. I do hope other people have had better experiences or will have. We’re all paid for now, so I’ll just have to let you guys know how it goes afterwards.

I went to a MW in NYC with my boy and had a terrible experience too! They wouldn’t even let us try on the tux, even when we told them he would be wearing cowboy boots and needed to see what type of pants would fit best with them. I guess, like David’s Bridal, it depends on the particular store you go to. I had an awesome DB experience in Spring Valley, NY, but I’ve heard horror stories about other locations!

megs08 says:

I think it definitely depends on the location. We went to a MW here in Richmond and had awful customer service in the regular suit department. The guy kept calling me “Boss”. Ugh.

FI and his family went to another location west of Cleveland and had a great experience. We also wanted to go with suits but ended up with simple tuxedos. FI is purchasing a black suit and the tuxedos he picked compliment his outfit. He’s buying ties and possibly pocket squares for groomsmen gifts. FI offered the free tux rental to my Dad which I thought was really sweet ;)

Luxe, fabulous idea to purchase off of eBay!

Depends on the location - i agree. I had an INCREDIBLE experience at MW Tux in Chicago

They only focused on us, were attentive and patient.

basically to sum up most of everyone’s post, i too had two separate occasions where MW sucked. My friend (the groom) went the night before to pick up his tux and it was ALL wrong…seriously there was no point in getting measurements previously it looked like crap. My friend ended up running to sak and dropping 5k on an armani suit due to panic! 2nd time my husband got fitted for a tux for his bf’s wedding..same thing, coat was too long, sleeves too short lol he looked like a hobbit :\ if living in NYC or NJ area, stay away from MW!
