The Boys

March 19th, 2008 @ 2:24 pm by Mrs. Sundae

As I’ve mentioned before, I am painfully indecisive. I am also really terrible at trying to visualize how things will look…I need to see them beforehand so I can stare at the picture for hours on end, agonize over it a little more, and then come to a decision.

Since our wedding party is essentially traveling from all over the country, we’ve decided to just tell the boys to wear their own black suits. Plain black, no stripes, but the rest is up to them. If they want to rent one, buy one, wear one they already have, doesn’t matter to us! I am envisioning black suits, white shirts, and a green tie. Easy, right? Not so much. I’ve been hunting for months to find the perfect green tie! I really wanted a stripe of some sort and nearly every green tie is paired up with navy blue stripes. And then, when I was close to my wits end, I found this at Brooks Brothers:

It’s the perfect shade of green, no blue stripes, and it’s also $75. That would mean that if we only bought these for the groom & two groomsmen we’re looking at over $200. I cried and kept looking. But then, Brooks Brothers had a sale! Not only did you get 15% off your entire purchase (25% if you have a store card) the ties were buy one get one 30% off.

A little over $50/tie is a lot more reasonable and it will make an excellent gift for the boys (we liked them so much the ushers and the Dads are getting some too). But since I am a freak and have to create mock-ups of things to see what they’ll look like, I had to get a visual of the entire ensemble before ordering. I give you, a really bad mock-up of the groomsmen:

Yes, there is a pocket square in that picture for a reason. I don’t know what color we’ll wind up going with, but Mr. Sundae is completely against boutonnieres so this is our alternative. It’s probably the only real opinion he’s had about the wedding so far, so it was hard for me to argue with him.

Are any of you going with suits instead of tuxedos? Anyone else giving up boutonnieres for pocket squares?

I’m going with brown suits instead of tuxedos. The girl that “helped” us at Mr. Formal actually tried to tell me they never rent out that “suit” for weddings as if I would have changed my mind about what I wanted. She had a lot of opinions about what I wanted. UGH. However. I am still doing bouts. Cuz I am a sucker for DIY projects. lol

I’m having an outdoors wedding. We are doing navy suits with chocolate vests and ties. I can’t see having them wear tuxes when we will be standing under a live oak tree. :) I like that we can unconventional yet stylish!

My FI is also anti-bout, which at first I wasn’t cool with — but, I’ve found some Little Shop of Horror-esque bouts in pics, and have totally warmed up to the idea. More floral money for other things!

The tie is great. And $75 for a tie (now less with the sale) is not that bad. Look at ties at Nordstrom someday if you don’t believe me! I think we will need a separate insurance rider just for FI’s ties (he has thirty - Nordstrom silk at $250 a pop. At least he can never complain about my shoes.)

We are having bouts. Thanks heavens for Bride and Blossom magazine - it only took three issues for FI to find something he was willing to wear. Picky, picky, picky. Now we only have to find him a new tie…

We also went with suits. I’m not a huge fan of tuxes - unless George Clooney is wearing it! ;)

we also are doing black suits of your choosing, with a tie purchased by yours truly. i searched and searched and searched for a tie that i liked that matched the bridesmaids’ dresses, and couldn’t find one.

on a day where i was very much down about the ties, a friend told me that BR was having a sale so i was looking for something for my father for christmas (ok and maybe a pick-me-up present for me). and then BAM! i found THE tie, ON SALE, and it was a PERFECT MATCH. i actually danced when they came in the mail.

i love when things work out! i’m so happy that things worked out for you too!

We’re doing black suits, bouts, and green ties too! After much internet searching (mostly not successful, and mostly ties around $100!) and many attempts to find matching green ties at Filene’s Basement and TJ Maxx, we found ours. Bloomingdale’s has their own private line of ties called Metropolitan View. They have a light green and white/cream very fine basketweave tie right now that looks great and doesn’t break the bank, but also doubles as a nice gift for the groomsmen.

LOVE the tie! You are my savor!!! I have been looking for the perfect shade of “Grass” green in a tie with no navy for months! We are doing black tuxes and vests, but with patterned ties. The grooms will be a slightly different tie but coordinate with the groomsmen. Fun, huh? Maybe THIS could be the coordinating tie?

We are also doing something similar. We are having the men wear any gray suit they would like and we are providing the ties. We decided to make every tie different as well, just all within the same color palette (champagne and copper).
Here are a couple photos…

I’ve been searching for a tie in this green too! Which one is it at Brooks Brothers? Thanks for the heads up!

Mr. P said no to the bout, too. And you know what? I thought the pocket squares were lovely!

That makes me feel better, Petunia! Nicole - I would say the white is not a bright white, but not really ivory either (helpful, I know). I’ll try to take a close up picture this weekend.

You’re not alone - I dislike bouts. The men are wearing pocket squares at our wedding also!

I love the look of the pocket square, and we might end up doing without the bouts to save a little loot on the flowers. The only problem is that then I’ll have to find the PERFECT pocket square, while I still haven’t found the perfect tie! Anyone know where I can find a teal striped or nice patterned tie? For not much money? Sigh…..

We’re doing pocket squares with tuxes because I hate bouts! We’re trying to find skinny black ties for the groomsmen but aren’t have much luck finding anything more interesting than solid black.

We did black suits with sage green ties. We found some nice DKNY ties at Macy’s (a few choices actually) and on sale they were $25 each.

I found this place while googling fuschia pocket squares: http://www.royalsilk.us. They sell fabulous ties and handkerchiefs for groomsmen with reasonable prices.
