So Clean Cut!

March 21st, 2008 @ 5:30 pm by Mrs. Daffodil

I just recently discovered the BEST paper cutter known to man - and just had to share with the hive! Where have you been all my life! Behold, the X-Acto 12″ Laser Paper Trimmer

So Clean Cut! : wedding crafts los angeles S136069 x-acto trimmer
Why is this paper cutter so cool, you ask? Firstly, the blades are super sharp and precise. Trust me - I went through 3 different paper cutters in the DIY process and no matter what I tried, either the blade didn’t completely cut through the grains of the textured paper or the cut wasn’t straight. The arm of this paper cutter, however, is much tighter and the blades act more like a pair of extremely large scissors, giving an extremely clean cut!

The BEST part though - get this - is that the blade has a laser in it that shows you exactly where the cut will land! You will know if your blade is even the slightest bit off! Check out the laser in action…

Believe it or not, this baby is pretty affordable too at ~$45-$50. Most other paper cutters are about $25-$30, and from my experience, they don’t cut too cleanly particularly when you have very textured or fibrous paper. (I’m afraid to admit that I probably spent about that price experimenting with paper cutters that didn’t work too well.)

Peng wants. No words can describe.

This is definitely on my list when my crappy paper cutter breaks! Until then, my fiskars $20 cutter is squeaking by :)

I haven’t had much luck with the guillotines! Do you feel like the paper slips, or is it okay? Does it cut a clean line all the way to the bottom of the paper?

Amazingly, yes! On most guillotines i’ve used, the arm tends to be a little loose, causing the cut to go at an angle. On this one, the best way i can think of describing it is that it feels more like it is a large pair of scissors than a guillotine…both because the arm is attached quite tightly and I think the bottom edge is also quite sharp, so you get the cut from both the arm and the bottom! Very sharp and clean all the way down, and much better than my rotary cutter!

My one minor gripe with this cutter is that the straightedge you push up against along the top was harder to line up against. However, the grid that is imprinted on the base makes it easy to make sure your paper is lined up properly.

I have always been a little afraid of guillotine paper cutters– perhaps I was beheaded in a previous life??? A paper cutter with OMG A LASER is just terrifying— it’s like a super killing machine!!! (LOL ;))

If only I had known. I bought my “paper crapper” a few weeks ago for my scrapping fetish but I already stopped using it. I won’t make that mistake again. Now I get everything online, from a scrapbooking index

I have this one too and I love it!

The only little annoyance that I have is that you have to press in that button on the handle to lift up the blade (a safety feature). It was after doing about 150 invites that it started to bug me. But other than that it is an awesome paper cutter!

What were the other 3 paper cutters that didn’t work so well? (so we know to stay away from those ones!)

hmmm I got this paper cutter for Christmas and I’ve been a little disappointed.

My neg points:
A - You can’t really just push the paper against the top and expect it to be lined up, it’s not straight or something. I do use the grids which are very nice but the top should be straight too!

B - I was trimming white from around picture a couple weeks ago and the laser didn’t seem to be very accurate. That was frustrating.

C - I do feel like the guillotine blade causes the paper to slip and therefore the cut not to be accurate. This did not happen with my mom’s guillotine I had been using previously.

Overall it’s ‘OK’, but I had higher hopes :)

I now have my eyes on the paper cutter miss cream puff suggested in her ‘Favorite DIY Projects’ post with the rotary blade. More expensive, but I think AC Moore sells it and they have 40% of coupons. Since I don’t have that store here I have my mom on the mission! I’m looking forward to comparing the two products.

oooh, that laser paper cutter sounds accurate! In terms of another paper cutter recommendation, I did a lot of research last year to try and find the most accurate paper cutter out there, and ended up buying the Tonic Studios Guillotine Paper Trimmer 12″. http://store.scrapbooking-warehouse.com/278674.html

You can buy it from scrapbooking warehouse for only $35, and I’ve used it for all of my wedding projects for the past few months, and it’s still extremely accurate! It has 1/2″ grid lines throughout, along with a ruler grid along the top, middle and bottom of the trimmer for smaller measurements.

Here’s a link to some reviews that I read before I bought the trimmer: http://www.scrapfriends.us/tonic_studios_trimmer.html

I searched for another paper cutter with a laser, and came across the MBM Triumph 430 EP semi automatic paper cutter. Unfortunately, it’s a high volume, heavy duty cutter that costs significantly more money than the X-Acto. It sure would be nice to have, though, if money and space weren’t a factor.
