About Mrs. Cherry Blossom

My DIY envelope liners - don’t sound so interesting, yes I know. But because I had a vision of what I wanted the inside to look like and couldn’t find anything close to my vision, I created my own. Of course the process was made easier because all my products, cards and envelopes were all from Paper Source.

We have a laser color printer at home, so I laid out my double happiness graphic over and over again on Illustrator and printed about 350 sheets of these puppies on 8.5 x 11″ paper. I could have gotten even more particular and just laid out graphics in those exact areas that I knew I’d trace and not waste so much ink, but I wasn’t thinking.

I worked very systematically so that I’d keep sane and work efficiently and quickly.  My first step was to draw out each of the templates with a pencil, so the trace would be nice and light: an easy project while watching tv. Another thing I did to maximize my time was to do these “little” projects while I was waiting on another to finish (in this case, my invites to dry), this way I am always on two things simultaneously.

When I was done tracing and the ink was still drying on my invites, I started on cutting them suckers out which was a painful process because I had to cut over 400+ of these babies - one version for the Chinese banquet on the second day and the other version for our American wedding on the first day.

Working on any project, I always have a handy recycling bag next to me and another for garbage; that way I don’t have to travel far and it makes clean up fast.

And with the quickness to stuff these suckers, I know this is going to sound real anal, but I had my piles of envelopes stacked with lip facing up on the left; liners, on the right; and permanent double sided tape close at hand. This made for easy grabbing. Reach left: envelope, bring to center. Reach right: liner, bring to center and stuff. Fold over, tape, finished piled in front and center and keep going. Am I weird? LOL … notice I had my laptop over there in the top, I was BeeTV’ing as I was stuffing them suckas so those of you that saw me, I got shiet done fast!

Good luck! And happy stuffing!

Quick question. We’re going to be taking on this task soon and the FI is concerned about attaching the liner to the envelope. Did you use double-sided tape, and if so where on the liner did you put tape so that it was easy to stuff it into the envelope? Sorry about getting so detailed!!!

Miss Cherry Blossom: Kudos for your efficiency! Your liners look great. Question: What kind of color laser printer did you use and did you also use it to create the rest of your invites? I’m considering purchasing a laser printer to DIY my own invites but not sure about the quality. Thanks in advance for any tips! =)

@Miss Penguin: anytime pengy, for you i go to the ends of the world.

@scarlet16: i used permanent double sided tape and i was real cheap on it. i’d slide the liner in position. then fold it down the flap to create the crease for the inner liner. then place 3 small pieces. one at top of the flap and the other two small pieces, in the center of the two sides near the edge of the liner.

@Aiisuru: thanks for liking our invites. i actually gocco’d all the parts of our invitations. As for the laser printer we have, it’s a commercial laser color printer.

I was just going to do a search about this! Do you think it’s worth buying/using a paper cutter for this project? Thanks!

What a great idea! I never thought about printing them myself… I was able to find great scrapbook paper at Michael’s that worked with our colors/invitation style, but I will definitely keep that in mind if I want something more specific next time!

@Sarah: I think scissors are the most effective way, it might help with the straight edges but it can’t round off corners, and it’d just take too long. once you get into it, you’ll become a master and to be honest as well, no one will see the bottom of the envelope liner, the parts that show is the top triangle and even then, once you put it inside the envelope, you cant see that they’re imperfect around edges, etc. no need to be a perfectionist on this project.

@bloo: an ink jet would still work perfectly fine! i wasted so much ink doing this project and you can totally prevent it. try determining which parts of the paper you can print that you would trace and cut out and insert into the envelope that would be exposed. that way you can designate an exact area on your paper that you would print your design only to mininize excess ink! i hope that makes sense. let me know if it doesnt.
