Fun With Letters

There are double doors at the entrance of our reception tent, and this gives me an excuse to do something fun with our initials. A few weeks ago I was at JoAnn Fabrics and found these letters for $3.00/piece…score! But now that I’ve been staring at them for awhile, the question is what exactly do I do with them…fresh flowers?

Paint and ribbon?
Tissue paper?
Or moss?
(Photos courtesy of Mrs. Pootiekins bio, Martha Stewart, BrideStarr bio, and Classic Bride respectively).

The paint or tissue paper solutions would be the easiest but the flowers and moss are by far my favorites. While discussing this situation with one of my very crafty friends, she noted that for the moss letters I would need a foam backing, not wood. In that same conversation she also volunteered to make the letters and bring them to the wedding, providing that I give her the foam letters in advance. I like it when people volunteer to do things for me :) So ignoring the fact that I already spent $6 on the wood letters (I am sure I will find some use for them) I set out for some foam.

We were at my parents’ house for Easter this weekend and got so much wedding stuff done it will be a week’s worth of blogging! One of the things we checked off the list were the foam letters. I assigned my Dad the task of making them and he didn’t disappoint. We bought two 2″ thick blocks of foam from Hobby Lobby that were on sale for $6. My Dad traced the letters onto the foam and cut them out with a knife (he claims their electric knife was quite handy). You can still see some of the tracing, but that will all be covered up with some moss.

You can see the fabric all rolled up there in the background. More on that tomorrow! Has anyone else attempted moss letters? I would be grateful for any pointers you may have!

Here are the directions I followed when I did it:

The fishing line is key! And always make sure your foam block is on the table, because if you’re tempted to pick it up and put pressure on one area, you’re likely to snap the foam!

I always get excited when I walk past the initials at Joann’s or Michaels…but then I also don’t know what to do with them. I still haven’t bought any yet. I’d like to hang them on our double doors in the reception hall as well…
the moss looks the best but green is not part of our color scheme…
I keep thinking about using fake flowers…but then wonder how many it would take..if you could even tell the letter it was after I was done….sigh…I have to keep thinking on this one!

I should have mentioned you in the post, sorry Mrs. Lemon :( We found your instructions by googling “foam letters,” which I thought was really cool. You’re now an expert on moss covered letter making ;)

What if you covered the wooden letters with fabric? Maybe the fabric in the pictures?…That could look cute!

Definitely go through with the foam moss letters, they are so pretty and natural, really good vibes I think. But you should hang on to the wood letters and do the paint and ribbon style to either display in a different part of the wedding location or in your home permanantly. I think they would look nice in a staircase, or his and hers sink style things, you could come up with any number of places to put them!

[…] and I walked around and gave direction while taking pictures. It’s the way to be. Besides the foam letters, Mama Sundae and I made one of the runners so that we can take it up to Wisconsin for our table […]
