About Mrs. Gingerbread

Hello, Weddingbee readers! I’m Miss Gingerbread and I am so excited to be a new Weddingbee blogger.

Wedding planning has been especially tricky since the Gingerbreads just moved to Vancouver, BC from Southern California 6 months ago. I’ll admit that I relied heavily on Google as I tried to find our venues and vendors. Coming from the land of eternal sunshine, we were really challenged to use our imaginations, as we often found ourselves staring out the windows of one restaurant or another trying to imagine what it would look like in the summer, minus the snow and the dark.

An additional challenge is that we are a same-sex couple. Again, we had to tap our imaginations as we read books and magazines that kept referencing the role of the groom.

Miss Gingerbread (me) and Miss Gingerbread (her). Hmm, this is going to be confusing.

On a somewhat related note, I’m scratching my head about what to call my future spouse when I refer to her in my posts here on Weddingbee. The bees that have come before me have all referred to theirs as Mr. Whatevertheirnicknameis. Calling her Miss Gingerbread will probably just get confusing as many of you will wonder why I am sometimes referring to myself in the third person. I suppose I could call her The Other Miss Gingerbread or T.O.M. Gingerbread, for short. Any other ideas?

I did a little research on Weddingbee and came across a post from a year ago that referenced same-sex marriage. At that time, 19% of Weddingbee readers were against same-sex marriage, but since I am a glass half full kind of girl, I’d like to focus on the fact that the majority of Weddingbee readers are for it. I’m looking forward to sharing my ideas and perspectives with you. Thanks for having me.

So glad you’re here! I hope the nay-sayers don’t give you too much grief. Maybe you can refer to your fiancee as DF Gingerbread?

2.
nikkinicole says:

yay! welcome! it will be nice to have even more variety in the hive :-)

i will be interested in hearing your perspective- i am a girl marrying a boy, but we have a few gay friends in our wedding party. as we are getting married in a state that prohibits gay marriage, i don’t want to alienate those friends, and i don’t want our marriage to be construed as an act of support of current exclusive marriage laws.

How about Miss Gingerbread 2? One of my favorite shows is the L-Word and one of the couples Tina and Bette decide to have a baby. They refer to each other as Momma T and Momma B… but there is only one Gingerbread moniker! Oy! Regardless, I’m excited to hear about your plans!

9.
Tracy says:

Welcome Miss Gingerbread! Perhaps call her Gingerbread 2.0 since she is a developer? (Uh oh, I just showed my geeky dev side didn’t I?)

I for one, am thrilled to have a bit of diversity here in the hive and look forward to reading about your journeys together.

You could call her Miss Ginger…we already did ‘veggies’ and ginger was never an option, so I am sure no one would mind.

That or ‘queen of everything’…oh wait…that is MY title.

sorry.

PS - I truly hope that 19% figure has come down, if not disappeared…I, for one, am so glad you are blogging with us.

I think Miss Ginger or Miss Gingersnap would both work. Senorita Gingerbread is also a cute idea.

I’m also so glad to have you in the hive. Your wedding sounds like it’s gonna be awesome from the description. I’m sure same-sex and traditional brides alike will get great ideas from your wedding. I can’t wait to hear more!

On a side note, I really hope that someday the US will follow Canada (along with the Netherlands, Belgium, and Spain) in allowing ALL people who love each other to marry. It’s just silly not to.

Katy says:

I’m also in the 81% group. Looking forward to your posts. I’m sure there are other same sex couples that will be glad to have your posts to refer to for getting ideas for their own wedding! I don’t have any clever or cuter suggestions for what to call your fiance. I kind of like post #30 W2B Gingerbread and Miss Lovebugs suggestions of Miss G2 or GB2.

Hi there! I am an old married by now but I just want to say that I am so excited that you have joined weddingbee. I think it is important that this perspective be shared on sites like this. It angers me that same sex couples can’t legally marry in the states, so I am thrilled that you are going to be taking the vows which were so meaningful to me and my husband. I look forward to your posts.

i’m so jealous i have to share you with the rest o’ the blogosphere now to talk shop. don’t forget, i need my weekly updates!

94.
kaymarie says:

i really don’t think it’s fair to be calling that 19% “ignoramuses”. everyone has their own opinion. this is a great chance to try and sway 19% (or less) of the hive population.

we can all play nice, right?

95.
December says:

I agree with kaymarie — the 19% are people too, and I don’t think it’s very “diverse” to wish them to “go the way of the dinosaurs” (eggplant girl) or “disappear” (Mrs. Corn). In fact, I’m very disappointed that a WB blogger would publicly wish for almost a fifth of WB’s readership to go away. That, I think, is just as bigoted as if someone said that Miss Gingerbread should not blog here.

96.
grace says:

eggplant girl — it’s 19%. get over it. it’s not like that’s the opinion of the majority of the blog readers. to be perfectly honest, i’d have to say that i vote with that 19%, but i don’t consider weddingbee to be my outlet for my stand for male/female only marriages. isn’t this place supposed to be in support of relationships regardless of their composition? at least, that’s how i’ve always viewed weddingbee, as a great resource for ideas and a place to be excited for others as they prepare to celebrate their lives with the one they’ve chosen to love. “ignoramus”, frankly, just isn’t fair. especially when, again, we’re looking at 19% of the readership. small number, don’t you think?

97.

Mrs. Bee says:

I’m excited to see that so many people are supportive of Miss Gingerbread and her upcoming marriage!

That said, I realize that gay marriage is a controversial issue. I personally support same sex marriage, but I understand that some people feel that it is a religious issue.

Regardless of what you feel about same sex marriage, I hope that if the subject comes up… we can all discuss the issues while treating each other with respect and courtesy.

Thanks,
Mrs. Bee

99.
Nichellebelle says:

Welcome Miss Gingerbread!

I would like to also say that I think it is unfair to chastise those of us who do not agree with homosexuality. We all have our various religious beliefs and we are all entitled to our opinions. This does not mean that I am rude or disrespectful to anyone. Nor does it mean I tell someone how to live their life. If you are a Christian, as I am, then you should love everyone. So welcome Miss Gingerbread. I think you should call her Gingy…sorry I have a thing for Shrek.

100.
kristin says:

hey there! I think it’s great you’ve joined the hive. Friends of mine were actually the first same sex couple to get married in Manitoba, and my Dad did the ceremony. Oh and I would like to point out that not all Christians disagree with homosexuality. This particular service was held in a United Church and one of those getting married was a minister! I just warn against seeing Christians as only have one belief.

101.

Miss Gingersnap for sure!

E says:

Welcome! I’m so excited to read about your wedding planning!

And to Grace: I’m appalled that you think it’s acceptable for 19% of readers not to approve of same-sex marriage. Would you feel the same way if 19% of readers didn’t approve of interracial marriages? Or interfaith marriages?

104.
Go Amie says:

I’m *not* in that 19%; I’m glad to have you here, and I can’t wait to hear more about your wedding. Like E (#104) I am shocked that people think that 19% is okay. I don’t want those people to go away, I want them to be more accepting of the different kinds of love in the world.

And welcome to Vancouver! We may have tons of rain, but it’s a beautiful place! And there are many great vendors in this area!

108.
kaymarie says:

E and Go Amie, what about those on the hive that are “appalled” that 81% of those here agree with same-sex marriage?

i’m not taking a stance on this either way but i’m dissapointed that only the majority opinion seems to matter much in this instance. for all sorts of reasons (including religious but extending as far as personal experiences and cultural reasons) people disagree with unions like miss gingerbread’s impending marriage- as well as “inter-racial and inter-faith”.

miss gingerbread, i wish you luck here on the hive! oh, and i change my vote to gingy (i have a weakness for pixar movies!). i love seeing vancouver brides on here as i’m only a few hundred miles south (michigan). you have to love the below-freezing weather at the end of march!

109.
grace says:

E & Go Amie– on a blog that gets as huge of a readership as weddingbee, how could it be possible that we have a view (doesn’t matter what is is) that’s supported by 100% of the readers? my main point was that i see weddingbee as a celebration of LOVE and COMMITMENT and not necessarily as a place that’s appropriate to try to alienate the 19% who happen to support same sex marriages.

that being said, however, i certainly don’t see myself in a position to dictate who can and cannont celebrate their relationship with a lifelong commitment. i’m thrilled that miss gingerbread and her fiancee are now part of the hive — their presence only further expands the base of those who can find weddingbee as an excellent wedding resource. we’re celebrating love here. isn’t that what it comes down to?

110.
beanchar says:

I’ll second Mrs Onion’s point about wanting something short that won;t give you carpal tunnel from typing it over and over! ;) You could be Miss GB and she could be Lady GB or any of the cute acronyms suggested above.

And, while I believe that everyone is entitled to their opinion, I sure hope the US pulls its head out of its “starfish” soon.

Marriage is a LEGAL contract and brings many rights unrelated to religious beliefs. No one is trying to tell churches that they have to perform marriages that their teachings frown upon, but the government should not be preventing committed couples from entering a marriage contract. Separation of church and state, people.

115.
Go Amie says:

grace & kaymarie - I *never* proposed alienating those who hold a different view than my own. I never suggested they leave. I noted my shock that there were so many at weddingbee, because I would not have expected the fraction to be so high.

I expressed my hope that eventually those who don’t believe that same-sex couples deserve equal protection under the law will eventually come around. I would say this if 9% of weddingbee readers were against it, or 19%, or 90%, or 99%. It is not about the majority, it is about my wanting to express my position that same-sex couples deserve the same legal rights and societal acceptance granted to opposite-sex couples.

If anyone disagrees with me, that is his or her right - but I don’t see how it was inappropriate of me to express my support for tolerance and acceptance.

This has turned into more that what I had wanted it to be - I came to this post to congratulate the two Miss Gingerbreads. I hope that those who disagree with me can agree to disagree, and not further hijack this thread.
