About Mrs. Lovebug

Armed and Dangerous (To Myself)

March 25th, 2008 @ 4:53 pm by Mrs. Lovebug

I keep weapons in the house. Dangerous, damaging weapons:

I have to protect myself against the greatest evil of all time! …my curly hair. My insanely tangly, sleep-on-it-once-and-it’s-a-magpie’s-nest naturally curly hair. And while I loooooove curls on other girls, I loathe them on myself. Hence the arsenal of tools to make myself look as little like my real self as possible.

(Ha! If my feminist studies teacher only knew what I’ve become.)

But all these wonderful instruments take a toll. Dryness, split and broken ends…me and my mini scissors can only sit in a pool of sunlight snipping away (come on, admit you’ve done it!) for so long. It’s time to take action. Bring on the Locks-smiths!

Ok, well, it’s not exactly the allied forces. But it’s a start! I’ve used the Bumble and Bumble deep conditioner twice, and I’m loving what it’s doing for my tresses. And I swear by the Omega 3’s, though I haven’t tried this brand before.

Anyone else trying to baby their manes in the months/weeks leading up to the wedding? Any advice or product recommendaitons?

I’m sure you already know this but the best thing is to not do anything (blowdry, straighten, wash) for as many days as possible. I know it is hard to do in the heat, but try to just wash & go (headband? french braid?) for as many days as you can and use that equipment sparingly. And when you do, make sure you treat your hair with heat protectant styling products before applying the heat.

This post is perfectly timed as I was actually sitting at my desk this morning snipping away. I was going to see if I could get in to get a mini-trim to take the ends off and then I was going to research the deep-conditioning. Thanks for the tips!

I would have never known you had curly hair judging by your pictures. I do too. I have found Aveda’s Hang Straight and their new Smooth Infusion Style Prep Smoother to be really great at getting it straight and keeping it straight.

As far as babying it - I am on a strict schedule of washing my hair only every other day whenever possible, and usually the second day just requires some touch up styling. That has helped a lot in reducing damage. And when I can I let it air dry and then straighten, one less heat implement damaging your strands.

Miss Lovebug, I’m with you in the have-curls-and-hate-them club. Bumble and Bumble straight and my trusty chi are all I’ve got. That and trying to not wash my hair a lot during the week.

I have curly hair too, but I actually like my curls (after years of hating them in high school). I can understand why you go straight, though, since you live in a dry climate. I know when I visit my parents in AZ my hair becomes a complete mess. I need my humidity!

I’m not really doing anything special to my hair in preparation for the wedding. I already use all natural products, don’t use heat for styling, etc. I probably should take some vitamins, though.

As a daily conditioner, I’m in love with Ojon. My only trouble with them is the blatant exploitation of the “Tawira Tribe.” I’m so a person of beautiful hair now since finding Ojon conditioner!!

my suggestion is a bit more of an investment, but amazing - the t-3 featherweight dryer. it makes my hair so much softer and lest “damaged” feeling after the dry. it apparently has to do with the way it dries your hair. all i know is it cut in 1/2 the rediculous amount of time it took to dry my 1/2 straight 1/2 curly thick hair and its so smooth i don’t even need to straighten it afterwards (a miracle, belive me!)

Miss Lovebug–what’s the brand/model of your hair straightener? I’m looking to tame as well! Thanks!

Not only am I the curly-hair-hater club president, I am also a member.

I wore my hair curly forever until I got sick of it in college, cut it short, and started straightening it. The rare time I wear my hair curly these days to give it a break (or simply b/c I’m running so late to work), and if I happen to go out to dinner or drinks, I always get carded (I’m 27) and people talk to me like I’m 12. The curls definitely make me look younger than I already look, but as a result of the daily straightening my hair has definitely become more dry and unhealthy.

I am trying to take care of my locks more now that the wedding is 6 months away. I might have to try that Bumble & Bumble conditioner!

Also, I stumbled upon this and thought of all the typewriter elements in your wedding.

Truthfully, the best advice I have is to leave it unscathed by heat tools as frequently as possible. It helps that I’m a scientist so I work in a very casual environment, so I can get away with wild crazy curly frizz and nobody looks at me twice.
Other than that, my hair has been SO much healthier since I stopped washing it daily. I invested in a good shower cap, and days at the gym when I only lift and don’t do cardio (and don’t get sweaty-scalp) I don’t wash it at all.

Also, someone commented on the T3 featherweight dryer — just wanted to throw in my $0.02 here — worst purchase I ever made. I am on my THIRD since January because they keep breaking on me and smoking while I am trying to use them. And T3 makes you PAY shipping and handling fees to get a new one, even if it breaks under warranty. Worst $200 I have spent in recent memory!

I have long hair that I’m trying to grow out even more for the wedding.
I’ve been using the Body Shop honey moisturizing conditioner and Frederic Fekkai glossing cream for a few years and my hairstylist claims my hair is the “healthiest long hair” she has ever seen.

I have the reverse problem - I WANT CURLS!

Any tips for straight haired girls who want curls/waves that will stay put for the wedding?

I go to a curly hair salon in NYC Devachan, that has pretty good products.
They sell their products online, just google the name.
I use them from time to time and really love them but they are kind of pricey.

I use their No Poo Shampoo, One Condition and their Angell.
I alternate with these too - Pantene curly hair conditioner and citre shine gel.

The owner of Devachan Lorraine Massey has a book on how to take care of curls called Curly Girl.

If you ever travel to NYC call a month before and make an appointment.

Oh one of their big no no’s is shampooing. Use only conditioner to clean your hair.

kerastase! the best hair product in the world - pricey but worth every penny.

Hi lovebug!
this is your dress-twin, and apparently you hair-twin as well. I have the same problem of having naturally very-curly hair - which is really odd for an asian. thanks for the helpful post! I love bumble and bumble products but for those on a budget, I have also found that neutrogena’s hair mask works pretty well.

As a curly haired girl I adore TIGI curls rock range- their shampoo and conditioner is so moisturisng and the amplifier is great for defined curl!

KERASTASE - both the shampoo and masque intense are ridic - they changed the texture of my hair completely. And I have naturally wavy/curly hair. With Kerastase I have to do very little witht he straigtening iron. I’ve tried Buble, Tigi, Aveda, Fekkai, etc…nothing has helped my hair more than Kerastase…

i heard miss jessie’s products are really amazing for curly hair. i worked at a shop where we sold their hair cream stuff and their customers were intense– they would run in and demand to know where we kept the products. most of their customers are african american but we did get alot of girls who weren’t and just had really curly hair.

22.
laura says:

oops i didn’t mean to make it sound like their customers were rude. they were just really passionate about the hair cream! some were panicked because they were down to the last bit at home.

Wow, thanks for all the recommendations, peeps!

G: my straightener is a Metropolis - pretty happy with it, has great temperature control, heats up super fast, rarely scorches me. Ha.

Glad to know I’m not alone in the self-curl-hating department. And, sorry, but NO WAY will y’all be seeing me rock the curls anytime soon. Except maybe if a few honeymoon shots sneak their way in…
