Giving Hope, Well Trying At Least

March 25th, 2008 @ 12:30 pm by Mrs. Flamingo

I like to consider myself as someone who gives. I try to volunteer when I can for events that are important to me, and I donate to charities in which I truly believe. I think we can all make a difference.

Breast Cancer awareness is something I truly care about. It only makes sense because six years ago, my grandmother passed away from the disease. Luckily though, my mom was more fortunate. She was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 37 and this year will mark her 10th year of remission. She is a proud survivor and I am happy to share it with the world.

In honor of my mom and in memory of my grandmother, I want to incorporate pink elements in our wedding which will highlight breast cancer. When I told my mom this, she started crying. She was so touched and I was happy because I love my mom so much.

The bridesmaids will have beautiful pink bouquets filled with roses and ranunculus. My flower girl’s basket will have pink and ivory ribbons on it. The favors will be part-gift, part-donation to the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation (more to come on that). I was even thinking of making pink ribbons for the guests, but I’m still not sure about this idea.

Any suggestions of what else I can do to highlight breast cancer? Will you be highlighting a charity for your wedding?

I’m doing something similiar! My aunt had breast cancer and passed away this year. She was so excited about our wedding and I can’t wait to do something special to remember her.

We’re thinking of doing wine charms with pink ribbons on them and also incorporating the pink ribbon into the favors somehow. I can’t wait to hear what other people suggest- I could use some new ideas :)

You could have a favor table with a picture of your grandmother & mother (plus anyone else you know who has had brest cancer) and an explanation of why yoou chose the charity as part of your favors. You could say ” If anyone would like to make an additional donation…” and have a box or glass jar available to put donations in.

In addition to explaining why you chose the organization/charity you could put more general info, including ways to learn more and/or get involved. Since it’s such a special connection you share with your mom & grandmother I also think it would be fine if you said something to draw attention to it during the reception.

I was thinking about give a speech about the whole reasoning behind the donation. Though most guest will know.

I think a bowl with the whole additional donation is an excellent idea. I will most def run it by Mr.F.

Thanks!!!

We are giving a donation but then we may make pink ribbon cookies and have a tag saying that a donation was made.

We are giving a donation to the Association for the Support of Children with Cancer (ASK) because this foundation helped my FI and his family get through the time with his battle against Leukemia. This month was his 20 year anniversary from being diagnosed, his been cancer free for 16 years. I wished we could explain to the guests, but he didn’t want people to know. I think it’s great to be giving back though!

We asked for charitable contributions instead of gifts, and suggested cancer.org (for my family) and diabetes.org (for his), but made sure people knew they didn’t have to pick those charities.

The American Cancer Society has all sorts of stuff on their website to help brides help them (tent cards, info sheets, etc), but the Diabetes Association had nothing. I didn’t want one charity to seem more significant, so we really just used word of mouth.

I’m not sure exactly what you’re doing for favors, but you could have cookies made from this site (pink ribbon ones - if they’re not listed you could request) along with a tag that says a donation has been made in honor of that guest towards breast cancer.

We did this with the Good Dog cookies on this site with a donation to the SPCA. Unfortunately about 1/4 of the cookies arrived broken so plan accordingly.

My cousin lost his mom to BC, and he registered for all bc-donation stuff (appliances, aprons, dishclothes….there’s a LOT).

Unfortunately, that does mean a commitment to pink kitchen decor.

You could invite all of your guests to wear pink.

My husband and I each chose a “cause” that was near and dear to our hearts. He chose diabetes (something that has impacted him and his family) and I chose breast cancer. Our favors were items we purchased from the charity (wristbands) and a note stating that a donation was made in their honor. Some organizations will even provide you with the note cards or bookmarks explaining the donation.

I love that you are Miss FLamingo, one of the only pink animals. Or maybe the only pink animal? I think that your guests will really appreciate knowing what the pink elements stand for, and it might even encourage them to be more proactive in helping out a good cause in the future!

I really like the idea of having a box for guests to donate if they wish. Instead of BC, because FI and I love animals (and my career in nonprofit and education) we thought donations instead of favors idea would be very fitting. Most of the time, favors are tossed so why not give to a deserving organization? I remember reading about a wedding that gave out the pink ribbon pin as favors. It came in a bag with an explanation. This can be from you or one that the organization provides you with. And if you want, you can always add pink candy or something small.

These ideas are so sweet! I like tberry’s idea of the favor table with the explanation and the request for additonal donations- I don’t think any guest would hesitate to drop in a few bucks.

I worked for a wine company that hosted a few fundraisers for Breast Cancer research. We served all pink beverages- pink champagne, pink spumante & rosè wines. This could be a nice touch- you could also buy a nice bottle of pink champagne and have a silent auction at your favor table…
