Rehearsal Dinner Venue: CHECK!

March 25th, 2008 @ 3:01 pm by Mrs. Cupcake

Mr. Cupcake’s parents will graciously be hosting our rehearsal dinner, so the research started many months ago to find the perfect location. FMIL Cupcake is eternally excited about all of the wedding details, so it has been fun to have her involved in this aspect of the festivities.

I have mentioned that Mr. Cupcake and I are both old souls, and we adore old places with an antique vibe and lots of character. His mom decided to focus on finding a place that was an old Inn or had an Inn type of atmosphere for the RD. In historical Chester County, Pennsylvania, this isn’t too difficult of a task! It was just a matter of finding the right one. Mr. Cupcake is also a major history buff, so he really liked the idea of having our rehearsal dinner at a place with some history.

After lots and lots of Googling, emailing restaurants for menus and specifics, and asking around, we narrowed our search down to a great place called The Ship Inn in Exton, PA.

According to the website:

In 1794 when the Lancaster turnpike was built, it was one of the marvels of the century. Almost the sole avenue of transport between Philadelphia and the west, it was soon peopled with stage coaches, wagons and drivers. To meet the needs of these travelers, public houses sprang up every few miles and among the earliest of these was the Ship Inn. The modern “Ship”, which serves today’s wayfarer with food and a “cup of cheer” is in the original building built by John Bowen in 1796. For this building he petitioned to the Chester County Court in that year “for license to keep a public house of entertainment.” The 1963 rear addition houses the “Lighthouse Grill.” The ship Inn was totally remodeled in 2000 as seafood and steaks.

Yes, I think a 212 year old Inn meets our requirements!

There are several different formal dining rooms in The Ship Inn, each with an open fireplace and unique decor true to its history. The Lighthouse Grill is the addition mentioned above where our dinner would be, as it will fit 50 people comfortably and that’s what our guest list is looking like right now. Here are photos of the room from the website:

We tested out the food last weekend with Mr. Cupcake’s parents, and everything was delicious (not to mention the sublime desserts…. I suggested that we skip dinner altogether and just have a Rehearsal Dessert, but this idea was overruled :-) ) The service was professional and friendly with all of the servers dressed in a shirt and tie, and it was clear to us that they hold a very high standard of service so this is not something we would have to worry about. Basically, we were all sold and decided to look no further!

Our guests will be able to choose from a soup or salad, one of three entrees, and one of two desserts (*sigh…* we really have to narrow it down to two???). I’m really excited about another thing checked off the list, and I think The Ship Inn is exactly what we were looking for. I like that it’s different from the rest of our wedding, and I’m already envisioning some cute nautical-themed invitations ;-)

Here are a few more photos I took while we were there (all exterior):

I’ve passed that place many times but I’ve never been in there. We’re trying to get ideas of a location to eat that wouldn’t be too far from our church in Wayne, PA. With our rehearsal time near prime time traffic I don’t think Exton would really work for us. Poo. :-\

Our choice was easy, we had the rehersal dinner at the restaurant where my parents met (accidentally mind you not on a blind date or anything).

My MIL and I went to try out the Meditarranean restaurant we were interested in, and we decided right then and there. We had a great time at our rehearsal lunch… belly dancer and all!

We’re having ours at a sports bar on the reception hotel venue’s property. Being as everyone involved is athletically-inclined, this works out great! They have a wonderful downstairs area that is smoke free (yeeaaayyy) and very classy. Plus, there’s local beer on tap, which made FI and the groomsmen happy.

We booked it after only looking at one place, but we did a lot of research leading up to it. I wanted something quintessential Philadelphia with history and tradition, since the Philly wedding is essentially a destination wedding for my entire family and me. We’re doing it at Bookbinders, and I think it should work out really well — several people not from Philly immediately recognized the name Bookbinders, the food is fantastic (they had us there for a complementary dinner to test entree options), and we’re getting a huge private room with a bar.

We’re having the toughest time choosing a rehearsal dinner venue. The biggest problem is that I can’t find anything with halfway decent food and decor that is in easy driving distance (not 40 minutes away) of the inn where the overnight guests are staying. I’m worried about the guests having to drive so far when it’s dark out, especially on the way home after they’ve been drinking. Does anyone else have this concern?

@Jodi: @Jodi: Jodi, Jodi, Jodi! REALLY?!? There are like a million places in Wayne to have a rehersal! What about Christophers? Cafe Winberie, Osaka? Wayne Hotel, Radnor Hotel?

Thanks for the Ship Inn post - took me back…haven’t been there in years and miss home like crazy…sigh…

We absolutely love a homestyle Italian place, family-owned, wonderful private room, and fantastic food. Unfortunately everyone we know either loves it too, or really hates it. It has what you might call “relaxed” service. They expect you to be there for the evening - its not the kind of place you go if you are catching a movie in an hour. Dinners are served in multiple courses, everything is cooked fresh, and it takes some time. While I think this will be just fine for our RD, I get nervous every time I hear a negative comment. Although we won’t have any of those people at our RD anyway, so I don’t know why I let it bother me.

Hi Miss Cupcake!

Totally stumbled across your blog today randomly, but I had to start reading as I am in a very similar situation as you–I’m getting married in Downingtown in October! I haven’t been to the Ship Inn in years–not since ownership changed hands–but I remember the food being very good there. We’re having our RD at Victory in Downingtown–one of our favorite places to hang out whenever we’re visiting the families (we’re planning long-distance from CT), and it should be a relaxed and fun night.

To be honest, I’m not super gun-ho about the whole wedding process, but I was presented a list this past weekend of things to do, so I have it on the brain.

Will definetely keep reading–best of luck!

We were totally hands-off with the rehearsal dinner planning, but the groom’s mother told us her horror stories of trying to find a site. Every place she had even a passing interest in was booked, and had been for months (silly her for only starting 8 months out in a resort town). Eventually she found a private club that wasn’t booked, but they weren’t members, so they basically started asking everyone they’d ever met, “are you a member of the tennis club? Do you know anybody who might be?”

Yeah, unfortunately I’m not that familiar with Wayne. We picked it since it’s the church his parents tied the knot in and it’s a happy medium from where his folks live in Chester Co and where my family is in Delaware Co. I did get a great recommendation to try Basil Bistro in Paoli (which I’ve eaten there before, YUM-O) and we’re going to look into the Bertucci’s we just found out is around the corner. But thanks, t! I will look into those restaurants because I am Wayne clueless. lol

@Jodi: Stay far, far away from Bertucci’s–the service at the one in Bryn Mawr is horrible. To wit: we had made reservations, which they lost, and we had to wait 45 minutes to get seated at a lousy table with the nicest possible waitress ever so we couldn’t get pissed. There are many, many better restaurants in the area worth your time and money.

@Jodi: Seriously - Bertucci’s is super terrible, I second that. Really, try Christophers - it’s yummy and not a bad price point. You should head out there for a “date” - there is a whole “restaurant row” at the intersection of Wayne Ave and Lancaster. Plus it is a good excuse to go get Hope’s cookies. Mmmm Hope’s…

What a great idea - I hadn’t even thought to look at the Ship in for the RD! Its a really ncie place.

Jodi - look at the Desmond Hotel in Malvern (not too far from Wayne). Maggiano’s in King of Prussia does too (minimum $1600 spending though).

I think we’re going to look at Iron Hill in West Chester too - they did a great RD for my future sister-in-law.
