My Favorite Guest Who Isn’t Coming

March 26th, 2008 @ 1:33 pm by Mrs. Lovebug

I blogged a while back about not knowing 53% of our wedding guests. Which, if I’m totally honest, relieves me of a good deal of pressure. Why kill myself to impress people I’ve never met, right?

Well, one of the invited guests is an English woman, an old friend of my fiance’s family who lives in England still. That alone is enough to make me like her (I’m a mad, mad anglophile). But she really won my heart with her wedding gift to us:

That “fourth leg” is the bit that takes us into London! In other words, she’s symbolically “bringing us over” to her. So sweet, right? Well, this morning, her par avion reply card arrived, complete with fancy British stamps:

lb-addy-edit.JPG

And this heartbreakingly sweet reply inside:

I’ve never met this woman and I want to give her a hug. She gives us a generous, meaningful gift off our registry even though she can’t come, and then writes this very honest and warm-hearted response. I’m so touched.

Now for the happy ending. On the way back from Ireland, we’re going to spend a couple of quick, mad-cap/whirlwind-tour days in London, including meeting up with her! So I’ll get to meet her after all! Yay. :)

And I’m curious - is this something anyone else has encountered? A ‘no’ reply, due to a fear of flying?

How sweet of her! Miss Lovebug, you may want to blur out your home address on the reply envelope.

That’s so nice. Oh and I think your RSVPs are the cutest! I love how you worded them.

So darn sweet! My brother’s family from Spain didn’t come in part because his wife is terrified of flying…I was so sad.

I have to say that I SO love your RSVP’s. I wish I had included some lines for people to write us a message. You’re uber creative Lovebug!

A really close friend of ours is terrified of flying and hasn’t done so in over 10 years. We sent him an invitation in SoCal knowing that he wouldn’t be able to make the trip to Iowa, and he replied with a copy of his plane ticket itinerary! I was totally blown away.

Too sweet!

I lost a bridesmaid due to flying, though not a fear. She will be in her 8th month of pregnancy by the time of her wedding, and originally wasn’t concerned with being AT the wedding while pregnant, but two months ago had to move across country, and wasn’t comfortable with the new idea of flying so late in her pregnancy. In the hustle and bustle of getting everything ready in her new house and preparing for a baby, she forgot to mention that she would no longer be able to serve as a bridesmaid.
Imagine my shock 3 weeks ago when I opened her RSVP card and saw a NO from one of my bridesmaids!

I am having a destination wedding and all of my (late) father’s family has declined due to fear of flying, but I definitely did have unexpected people reply “yes”.

Hiya! That was sweet. I’m intrigued, though. How did you register for airfare using paypal?

Cheers and best of luck!

One of my best friends from college won’t be coming to my wedding cause she doesn’t fly. She’s only flown once and she was drunk for that flight. Now that she’s a mommy I don’t think she can do that.

I so love her! Poor dear, afraid of the flight, that makes me sad.

We just got back from Ireland and had the best time! Where are you going into? What are your plans?

lovebug - love your posts and wish I could see it all come together for your wedding - you’ll have to post a lot of pictures!

note to ew: people like you obviously CAN’T READ! The charming part was not the money, but the thought of which gift the guest chose to give and the cute note.

My fiance’s uncle isn’t the biggest fan of airplanes, so we’ll have to see if he makes it out !

I second gji7. Also, ew, if you bothered to read anything else on this site, you’d know that Miss LB has a wickedly, wonderfully sarcastic sense of humor. She certainly didn’t mean that this sweet woman actually won her over with a present. Sheesh, come one.

My husband’s paternal grandfather didn’t come - not really a fear of flying exactly. He was afraid because it was flu season (Dec) and flights tend to spread germs. He didn’t want to get sick from flying. :(

That’s just the cutest! I’m glad you’ll get to meet her.
I actually do have that problem. Very few of my 15 aunts and uncles, 25 first cousins, or 9 first cousins once removed will make the trip from New York to Texas for my wedding. They’re a “little bit country” and most have never been on a plane before. My grandmother and grandfather will be coming, but after my dad took his mom to Puerto Vallarta about 15 years ago she vowed to never get on a plane again. They will be riding on my grandpa’s “scooter” (motorbike, not wheelchair) all the way. It’s something they’ve done before, but not in many years. I think I’m going to try to talk one of my aunts into giving G-ma a valium and sticking her on the plane.

FI’s grandparents (maternal & paternal) aren’t joining us due to flying related/health issues. I can understand somewhat, but my 83 year old grandmother (who has plenty of her own health issues to worry about) is making the trip..so I guess I figure everyone else should be able to! (I don’t really, but it would be nice)

I feel her pain! I am terrified of flying and only do so when I absolutely have to. What a sweet RSVP, though. And I’m glad you’ll get to see her afterall!

That is sweet and sad. My BIL is terrified of flying, but he took some valium and fortunately made it there.

ocicats: Yikes! Thank you - just fired off a fix-it note to Mrs. Bee.

megan: it was a listing on our Honeyfund honeymoon registry; we just registered for various “items” like airfare, food, sightseeing, etc., and gave each gift a thorough description.

Melissa: we’re doing a self-driven tour of Ireland - a haunted one! I’ve blogged about where we’re headed and staying (a few posts back), but the actual itinerary is a surprise - Mr. Lovebug has taken over planning. :)

ew: You clearly have my number. I am hereby publicly de-closeted as the money-grubbing, classless bridezilla I am. Whew! Glad that’s out!

yup, we lost a guest due to fear of flying… my great uncle lives in north dakota, and the wedding is in california… he won’t fly at all, and due to past injuries doesn’t really want to sit in the car for more than a day… so as much as he’d love to come see the family and we’d love to have him there, he won’t be able to make it. :(

I’m a bit worried about loosing guests for this reason. I hadn’t really given it any thought until last week when FI asked his two best friends to be his groomsmen- neither of them, nor their girlfriends have ever flown. They’ve all got a lot of nerves about making their maiden voyage a long-haul overseas flight! I can’t say that I blame them! I think we’ll be getting a lot of responses similar to those :-(.

Lovebug, so happy you’ll have the opportnuity to meet up with her. She’s gotta be a fantastic lady :-).

Ew- what in the hell is the matter with you?
