About Mrs. Hydrangea

PTO

March 26th, 2008 @ 4:24 pm by Mrs. Hydrangea

About four o’clock this morning, I woke up feeling like someone took a hammer to my face. I have had the mix of allergies and a cold for the past week and a half now, and today I had to take my second day off of work in two weeks. I’m not the type to miss work, I just feel guilty when I do, but it also brought up another issue other then being absent: PTO.

Ever since we got engaged, I’ve been carefully eyeing my paid time off to make sure that I have enough for a few days before the wedding, the honeymoon and one day to recover after we return. The extra days I had would be utilized for wedding meetings, portrait sessions, etc. That was until the past couple of weeks when I had to miss work because the unpredictable and oh so ever-changing Texas weather (snowing one day, 80 degrees the next, no lie) decided to work a number on my sinuses.

I should still be ok in the long run, timewise, but I never realized just how much weddings can impact every aspect of your life!

How are you all planning on using your PTO, or vacation time… or, more importantly, making sure you still have some before the wedding comes?!?

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to get some meds from the doc and spend the remainder of the day laying in bed, and, let’s face it, work on whatever wedding items I can from my laptop!

I’m down to a day and a half plus of personal time plus three sick days left for the year (other than the wedding, honeymoon and two days for Christmas).

I wish I had more personal time because I’ve been sick lately and would love to use a sick day but I’m worried I won’t have enough for the end of the year. Because of how much stress I’ve been under my immune system has been pretty weak this year. ugh!

we’re getting married on a sunday, so i’ll take thursday (rehearsal dinner day), friday (dropping off OOT guest bags, running final errands) and the following monday off (sleep!).

unfortunately i’ll only have 2 days of vacation left after the wedding, so we’ll postpone our honeymoon until i have at least a week built up. (and we have some $$ saved!)

I’m actually using unpaid time for our honeymoon because I won’t have any paid time left. Such a bummer :(

I get a freakish amount of leave time, but my husband was putting in tons of overtime in the months leading up to the wedding, just so he’d have enough comp time saved up for the honeymoon. When I had a family emergency two weeks before the wedding, his boss let him take a special “family emergency” leave even though it wasn’t technically his family yet. If he’d had to spend real leave time on that, I honestly don’t know how we would have worked that out.

That being said…take care of yourself!

I feel your pain, I have several appointments this week, some wedding related, some health related and as a result I have been coming in early, staying late, working extra hours all so that my hours will all balance out this week. My PTO is sacred and since I will need all three weeks for the week that the company I work for is shut down for Christmas(2 weeks before the wedding), the week before the wedding when all my BMs will be in from out of town and the week after when we will be on our Honeymoon! Hang in there and feel better!

I just started a new job in February, and I am getting married on April 5. So I’m taking a week and a half off unpaid, since I haven’t been able to build up any vacation time yet. Bummer!

Surprisingly, a lot of the vendors and services I use were willing to make special accomidations for my fiance and I to meet them on Saturday afternoons or mornings. I wanted to save my PTO for sickness and the actual wedding. So far so good, hope you have the same luck!

I work an odd schedule, where I have every other Friday off. Luckily our wedding is Saturday of one of those weeks. I am also going to take Thursday and Monday (we will be going away for the weekend). Our honeymoon isn’t until after the first of the year. At the moment I actually have 168 hours of PTO, which is pretty good for me!! It helps that I’m salaried, and our company policy is that we don’t have to take PTO for periods of time less than a full day - so if I have to take an hour or two to meet with a vendor that’s okay, as long as its not unreasonable.

Since we’re getting married in November, we decided to hold off on the honeymoon until the next calendar year, letting us use a fresh stock of PTO. Worked out well, since our Decembers are typically very busy for work and our Januarys are not as bad. Win-win!

I had gotten engaged right before starting my new job and I had to save and save just to have enough PTO time for my honeymoon and a few days before the wedding. I work in govt. and we only get paid overtime in ‘time’ so I was always excited to work night meetings.

I work at a company that “bids” time off. Our fiscal year starts in June and my wedding is in March. (towards the end of the year where it’s nice weather and everyone wants off !!!)) To top everything off I am the last in line as the newest employee!! While I know I will have my wedding DAY off , (mean but not cruel , they would not make me work my wedding day) I still don’t have any promises I’ll have the week before or after off yet. ( Oh and I can’t split my “weeks” into “days” , makes planning frustrating)

I’m always keeping an eye on my vacation time. Our sick is separate so I don’t worry about that. But I’m worried I won’t have a week of vacation. I wish I had 2 weeks, but I certainly won’t have that. We’re not taking a honeymoon right now. I would be screwed if I did.

well i think i will be taking a month off, the week before the wedding and 3 weeks after, while still being on call if they need me. i will aslo use all my personal, and vacation time as well… since we will be doing wedding/honeymoon/moving, i think i will need it!

So far I haven’t taken any time off to meet with vendors, and I hope to keep it that way. I currently have about a week and a half of vacation time saved up, and that should be over three weeks by the time of the wedding. I do take days off here and there for other things, but I’m trying to make sure that I will have 2.5 weeks or so for the time around the wedding. Our sick time is separate.

I’m really grateful for the school holidays because my fiance and I are both school teachers. We’ll have two weeks off after we marry on the Sunday before Christmas. We planned it that way so that we can really enjoy our first summer holiday together as a couple rather than going through the pre-wedding stress before we start a new academic year. I’m extra fortunate to be working in an independent school so I’ll have an extra week off before the wedding to get everything sorted. It should all work out!!!

suzanno I am very jealous of your schedule and PTO policy ! My work doesn’t really like that so much…

I have 60 hours saved so far, as long as I don’t get sick I should be good for the 10 days off I intend to take ! and have some left for X mas too !

I’m very fortunate that I get 28 days of PTO this year (I hit my 5 year tenure, so I get a bonus week) and this will allow me to have 2 weeks off surrounding the wedding (3 days before, the week after & 2 days into the week after that) in addition to the rest of the time throughout the year…

Is anyone borrowing PTO from the future? I’ve thought about asking to go negative.

GetMarried4Less says:

well, i have a negative balance now bc our HR dept switched systems and then had a that particular job that keeps upp with the leave vacant for nearly 5 months!

so next month, i finally dig myself out of the hole. which is good bc i will need a day or so to run up to the city where my FI lives so we can find a new place to live.

when my wedding rolls around, i estimate i will have about 4 days. but its all good, bc i’m outtie! i’ll be relocating after the wedding! they just dont know that part yet………

My school schedule has been very flexible for vendor appointments, but we are moving the honeymoon to late December/early January so that I don’t need to miss class. I hope I’m not ready to drop that Monday morning!

Ahh the part that stinks is coming back after the wedding/honeymoon and realizing you have no more vacation time!! ughhh

Hey I’m dealing with a DOUBLE WHAMMY. Not only am I getting married and going on a honeymoon this year, my fiancé’s sister is also getting married and it’s a destination wedding! I was engaged first and thought “Oh I’ll have plenty of PTO” but since we’re going away for a week for her wedding I have to be very wise how I use it.

Of course when you get the thought in your head “I don’t care how sick I am, I’m not missing any work because of the wedding”, you get deathly sick. I had the flu and missed some work. I’m lucky my company is generous with the PTO. After the time I’m taking off for his sister’s wedding, mine, and the honeymoon I still have 28 hours of PTO (which will hopefully be enough when we purchase our first home).
