About Mrs. Flamingo

I started planning my wedding almost 2 years in advance, so I pretty much have all my accessories down. It’s too bad because last year I started making jewelry.  Oh well.

One accessory that I haven’t purchased yet is my brooch. I wanted to tie my sash with a blingbling brooch, but hadn’t found anything I liked. Then it hit me - why not make one? And that’s exactly what I did! So ladies… here is my DIY brooch (with step by step instructions).

List of materials:
Cooper Wire (color of your choice)
Swarovski beads (small, medium and one large piece)
Cutters
Pin (for backing of the brooch)
Round nose pliers (optional)

I purchased medium and small cone shaped swarvoski crystals in both greyish-taupe and clear colors. I also purchased a galatic stone (large swarovski crystal) which will be the center of the brooch.

Step 1: I prepared all my materials to be sure not to miss anything. It’s really annoying when you don’t calculate everything correctly and you need to go back to the store.

Step 2: Using the copper wire, start making a base to your brooch. It’s quite simple, pretend you are sewing. Make circular shapes and intertwine the wire in certain places as to ensure its steadiness.

You should stop when you have a shape you like. It needs to be quite steady otherwise the weight of your stones might cause the brooch to bend.

Step 3: Now it’s time to incorporate the swarovski beads. You do the same thing as when you were creating the nesting of the brooch. Simple loop and intertwine the wire, but add beads at the same time to create a pretty shape.

Keep going until you have gone completely around the whole brooch. Verify that certain areas don’t have huge gaps. No worries, this is error proof. If you are missing beads, simply go back and add more.

Step 4: Now it’s time to add the back pin to the brooch. Using wire, simply “sew” it to the brooch using the base of the brooch. Go around several times to ensure it stays in place.

Voila! The brooch is done. I must say I’m quite happy with it. What’s great is that if ever after the wedding, I don’t want to keep it (I don’t know why I wouldn’t - but you never know) I can undo it and use the stones for a matching necklace and earring set. Recycle :)

Price breakdown:
Galactic Swarovski stone = $6.75
Medium sized Swarovski stones : $4.90 / dozen
Small sized Swarovski stones : $1.85 for 6
Copper wire: $5.75 huge roll (which I already had - for my other DIY projects)
Pin : $1.00
—————–
Total cost: $20.25 (in reality it’s about $18, but don’t forget these are genuine Swarovski crystals and it’s worth at least $60)

What do you think? Is my brooch sash worthy?

It is really unique and beautiful! How fun! Can I just send you a check and you make me one? These things never turn out right for me!

So funny because I’ve been looking for brooches all morning! I started collecting them awhile ago from ebay! Now I finally have one I will wear but 4 extra’s! So I decided to get 2 more and then give those to my bridesmaids to wear on their sashes or as bouquet jewelry!

I definitely like yours a lot! Very creative!

Hee. Mr. Bee has the same view as I did.

But I Think that turned out awesome! Great job.

You are too talented. I could never make that! I’m more of a paper girl.

Man when I saw the first few pictures I thought it looked like a jumbled mess. But then I kept scrolling and saw this really beautiful brooch. I think if I tried I would never move past creating a mess.

honestly, the wiring looks kind of like a bunch of twisted paperclips. the jumbling of the wire makes it hard to see the crystals. It might be a fun craft project to add bling to a tote bag or perhaps an old denim jacket, but not for the most photographed day of my life. It’s a bit too obviously crafty to match your pick-up dress. Southern grandeur dresses demand high-class accessories! ;)

cool idea, but it looks messy (it’s a ball of wire) and has no shape or form to it. I agree with buzzin…it’s hard to see the crystals and an actual brooch might look better against a wedding dress.

Thank you for your concern ladies… but in person the brooch is prettier than in pictures. Everytime I would put the flash it would not work (it would shine too much)

I tried it and it looks really pretty on my sash. But again thanks for the concern. ;)
