Mmm, Cake

March 27th, 2008 @ 5:59 pm by Mrs. Gingerbread

The one good thing that came out of attending the Wedding Fair, was meeting Nina of Tartlets. I noticed that her signage said, “Stockholm, Toronto, Vancouver” on it, so I asked her if she was Swedish. This led us to talking about my favorite cake, the traditional Princess Tårta.

Miss GB 2.0 and I went over to North Vancouver for a cake tasting. Nina had prepared a sample of the cake and we discussed the complications of tiered cakes and marzipan. The cake was light and delicious and Nina had some great ideas of how to execute our vision.

I originally thought that I wanted this sort of design for the cake (the one on the right):

But then Nina showed us some of her designs and we decided we really liked this one:

Ours will be light green (like in the first image), with white detailing.

We were very happy with the price and to be supporting a new, woman-owned small business. By the way, Nina bakes all kinds of cakes, so if you are in need of a wedding cake or any cake, check her out. Her prices are very fair and she is very talented. So far, I think this is the least stressful wedding planning thing we’ve done.

It’s refreshing to have you around Miss. Gingerbread. I am also trying to support independent businesses and to be socially conscience in my wedding planning…
And you picked a beautiful cake!

What a wonderful choice. It is such a treat to eat princess cake… when you can find it! My sister has been living in Sweden for almost 10 years and was married about 2 years ago in the US in our home town. For her wedding she had a princess cake and it was delicious, the only problem is that the cake did lean a little. The cakes are tricky to stack, so I would suggest a trusted delivery or staking it on site.

Oh, that sounds so good! It is both easy and hard to do the small, local business thing. Easy because they are right here, they are really nice people, and you know its the right thing. And then you see article after blog after post about all the many ways you can save a hundred dollars here and a hundred dollars there. Thank heavens my mom is also a staunch local business supporter, and sets me straight every time I am tempted to look for just a little better deal. She is right. And we love our local vendors.

Mmmm…. sounds good. That will be a very pretty cake, too.

My mom’s friend made our cake for us, so we knew exactly where the money was going. She did an awesome job and even made it with organic ingredients for us.

Yay for the little guys!!

Oh my goodness I love Princess cake. My friend has princess cake for her rehearsal dinner and it was a huge hit. For anyone who needs/wants a quick fix, Ikea has a frozen version in their foods section. Not as good as fresh or homemade, but easy!
