The Small Things

March 28th, 2008 @ 11:33 am by Mrs. Cupcake

They say that it’s the small things in a relationship that make all the difference. The little gestures of kindness, the smiles and subtle signs of affection, the tolerant demeanor when I have a crying fit, etc. But seeing how our significant other treats friends and strangers can also be a nice reminder of why we love that person so much.

Last night after meeting me at happy hour with some of my co-workers, Mr. Cupcake followed me home, and immediately as we were walking in the door, his cell phone rang. It was a good friend (and one of his groomsmen) who found a leak in a pipe in his house, and called Mr. Cupcake for some guidance. Although he works behind a desk for a construction company now, Mr. Cupcake worked in the field as an electrician all through college and the following few years, and to say he is “handy” is grossly underestimating his skills. (I’m not just bragging because he’s my future hubby — the boy knows a LOT about all aspects of construction.)

So there we were, at 8:00 on a Thursday night, not too far off from Mr. Cupcake’s usual bedtime (since he wakes up at 5 a.m…. just thinking of waking up that early makes my head hurt), and ready to relax. He was trying to talk his friend through his plumbing problem, but was concerned that things might not go right, so he told him he’d be right over. “Right over” is 40 minutes away, so once he would get there, help him resolve his problem, and get back home again, it would likely be at least 11:00. But he went, without hesitation, to help his friend out.

I know that most people treat their friends with kindness, but gestures like this make me love Mr. Cupcake even more. I know he genuinely wants to help and he doesn’t feel at all burdened. I realize that he wasn’t driving 200 miles in the middle of the night during a blizzard to help a friend with a burst pipe, but nonetheless, he went out of his way to help his friend because that’s just what he does.

What kind of things has your fiance done for others that has made you fall in love all over again?

My guy is a pretty giving person in general - if you ask, he’ll do - but in particular, it warms my heart that he always takes his left-overs (and mine, for that matter) after we’ve eaten out and finds a homeless person to give it to. It’s little things like this that make me so grateful to have snagged him :)

If he has change in his pocket, he will give it to any beggar on the street. I like to think that in general I am a kind person, but there are so many street people in Chicago, and sometimes I find myself resentful when I feel like I can’t walk down the street without being asked for money - plus we have our own financial challenges! But I always am touched when I see my sweetie reaching for his change before we even reach someone who clearly is asking for it.

Mr. Jasmine always astounds me with his kindness. He is the most generous person I’ve ever met. He has NCAA basketball tickets for this weekend and realized he couldn’t go. Instead of trying to sell them, he immediately overnighted them to the Detroit Boys and Girls Club so some lucky kids could enjoy the games. So sweet!

He is a high school teacher at a very urban school and it’s so sweet how much he cares about his kids (even if they are rottenish). He always says that they are good deep down and really believes it.

I have a hard time putting my finger on any one thing he has done. But he is a really kind and generous person, and his friends are absolutely devoted to him. His best friends (all married) went to high school with him, and they were college roommates. Every one of his friends (and their wives) have gone out of their way to tell me that they are so happy for us, and what a really great guy he is, and to offer their help with anything we need. He really wanted me to meet his friends as soon as we got serious, and I remember thinking that anyone who could inspire that kind of friendship over so many years must be a truly good person.

This is a great topic! A few years ago, a friend of ours got in a horrible motorcycle accident that resulted in her being in a coma and ultimately having her leg amputated. Miss GB 2.0 really stepped up to the plate and took care of our friend’s parents, the bureaucratic red tape, drove to the hospital that was an hour from our home every day, etc. Thankfully our friend pulled through and moved in with us during her recovery*. Seeing Miss GB 2.0 take care of our friend really made me certain that she was the person I wanted to spend the rest of my life with and made me confident that we could handle anything together.

*Now our friend is doing great! She snowboards, skateboards, and is just an all-around inspiration…but that’s a whole other topic.

I have two aunts with MS and every time my fiance sees them he treats them like they’re queens and he’s their footman - helping them walk, opening doors, bringing them drinks. No one has ever asked him to do this - he just does. And I love him for it.

just recently my bf spent all day helping his cousin decide which dorm she was going to apply to live in for her freshman year in college. he actually sat down with her and listed all the pros and cons of each dorm and helped map out which one was closest to her classes [it definitely helped that she's going to the same college we both went to!].

A few weeks ago, my Grampy called to say that he wasn’t feeling well. He wasn’t sure what was wrong, but he woke up on his kitchen floor. Mr. P was on his way home from work and was relatively close to Grampy’s house. When I told him what was going on, he changed course and headed to Grampy without my asking. We realized that the ambulance was going to beat us there, so he headed to the hospital. Once I finally arrived, Mr. P. had already spoken with the triage nurse and signed my mom and I in so that we could go see him right away. It was all quite scary but it was so comforting to know that he was taking care of things. (Grampy is all better now :)

It sounds like we all found some nice guys :)

when my fi and i first started dating, a friend of ours was selling some crystal bracelets her co-worker was making to help fund her wedding. the bracelets were a little pricey, but he purchased 5 of them anyway to help the young couple out. 2 for me, one for his sister, and 2 for his little baby nieces. i was so floored by his generosity.

the thing that has impressed me the most with him is not that he does the most overly considerate things but that he is really learning how to be considerate! it may seem natural for a guy to clean up for the night and bring your purse, etc. near the door so you can leave, but he’s been raised so that others (ahem, his mom) do everything for him. so to see him taking steps to be thoughtful to other people (me, his best friend, his family) is truly heartwarming (and a really big step!).

Mine is a teacher, college writing (mostly freshmen). So when I hear him having conferences with his students, offering them suggestions, writing them recommendation letters (even when they ask at the last possible second), and just taking the time out for his kids…it warms my heart :)

My fiancee’s outlook on life amazes me to no end. Things that would be devastating to me, are only opportunities to him to make things better. He’s so optimistic and always sees the glass as half full. He can find an admirable trait in almost anyone. He will also go out of his way for any person who needs his help.
