Keeping Stress In Check

March 29th, 2008 @ 3:05 pm by Mrs. Gingerbread

Miss GB 2.0 and I are about to celebrate our five year anniversary. Anyone want to guess what we’ll be doing? I’ll give you a hint. It involves boxes.

No, not these boxes.

In case you were wondering, those are reusable moving boxes, like the ones we’ll be renting for the move. Yes, we are moving…again. Our last move from the U.S. to Canada was big, so at least this one is just across town. And speaking of looking on the bright side, I guess the fact that we dragged our feet and didn’t order our invitations earlier worked out for the best. Can you imagine having to move after your invitations are out and RSVPs are coming in?

This has been quite a stressful year in the Gingerbread household, packed full of major life changes. According to this stress scale, getting married is #7 on the list! Add to that the multiple moves, the new jobs, and uh oh, I think we’re approaching unhealthy levels of stress.

So what are you doing to help yourself cope with stress?

Thinking about moving to Canada is how I cope with stress! Just the thought of universal health care and spelling ton with an extra n and e calms me right down. ;)

Once I come out of my Maple Leaf fantasy, I find that herb tea can work wonders and yoga is magic (if you can magically find the time to do it!).

*But seriously, I would love to hear the back-story about how you ended up living in Canada– and becoming citizens. (Yes? I’m assuming you did b/c of the marriage thing, but maybe they will marry non-Canucks??) Nosy beanchar wants more info!

Yes… Yes I can. I am dealing with this right now, but luckily canada post is pretty good at forwarding the mail.

Good luck with moving and unpacking!

I cope with stress by eating :(-but I’m trying to relearn. Watching reality TV and yelling at stupid people helps, or just watching Gordon Ramsay yelling at people for me :)

I can sympathize. In the first year of our marriage, we moved twice, I changed jobs and I started grad school. Combining moving with wedding planning is s-t-r-e-s-s-f-u-l. I’m sure it’s worse combined with navigating a new country!
For the first (combining all our stuff) move, we had a window of a couple of weeks, so we broke the moving down into manageable chunks: moved and unpacked all our books (that’s a LOT) in one Saturday, then moved other stuff in bits and pieces. It took a little longer but it was much less stressful than trying to do it all in one day or a single weekend.

One thing that helped me, for both moves, was to visualize how nice the space would be when we were all settled in to it. Imagine it being warm and cozy on a drizzly November day, when moving will be a distant memory and you two can snuggle up with your pets and enjoy your home. And maybe page through your wedding pictures together. :-)

Good luck!

Thanks for the support. The move was pretty brutal and I hate having boxes everywhere!

@beanchar: I will definitely have to work on a post about what brought us to Canada!
