Ad-DRESS-ing Issues

March 31st, 2008 @ 1:32 pm by Mrs. Bubblegum

God, that title was so lame. I apologize.

I have a couple of dress decisions to make, so I thought I’d put them to a vote.

The first is the sash. For the months that I ogled my dress here,

dbdress

I pictured it with the sash. And I even bought that exact sash. But once I got it home, I started to get nervous that the sash would be too much - especially because I will be wearing red shoes. And as it turned out, the sash that’s already attached to the dress is pretty cute. So the first poll is:

(My hair/face were looking particularly gnarly on this day, so please don’t let them influence your decision.)

Oh, and Mr. BG, you may GO NO FURTHER!

dress_sash dress_sash2

Sash?

dress_norm

Or no sash?

Aside from the sash issue, I’ve also been slightly overwhelmed by the sheer VOLUME of clothing I’ll be wearing - which made me wonder if maybe the petticoat was contributing to the problem. So just for fun, I tried the dress without it… which leads to the next poll:

dress_norm

Petticoat?

dress_saggy

Or no petticoat?

And what dress-related decisions have you had to make?

i like your dress with the petticoat because it shapes the dress, but if the petticoat is too much, i’m sure you can find another alterntive. Also I like your dress WITH the sash… but does it coordinate with your BMs? If it doesn’t then No sash, but if it does then go for it.

i’ve seen a lot of dresses lately with a “splash of color” like the sash, and honestly, i don’t like them all that much.
this is the day where you really get to wear all white and be a BRIDE… so, i say no sash. i think it looks great.

and definitely keep the petticoat. the ruffles don’t look quite right without it.

I vote- yes petticoat (it makes the pick-ups look a lot neater).

As for the sash- I vote no sash. The white one that comes with the dress is thinner and makes your waist look a lot narrower than the wider, colored sash.

But, truth be told, you look beautiful in any combination.

Keep the petticoat and the original sash (the non-green one)!

i’d vote for sash and petticoat.
i love that color of green–very pretty and complimentary to your skin and hair color.
you’re going to look amazing no matter what you decide :)

I vote No for the sash. I don’t love the colored sash look unless it’s a coordinationg cream or champagne or white. I think you look beautiful with the all white gown!

And definitely with the petticoat. It fulls out the shape of the dress.

Either sash works - but I like the look more with the petticoat - it just makes your dress fuller and the pick ups fall much prettier.

I vote a very big YES for the petticoat - the dress hangs properly with it and it looks limp without it. Also, those top ruffles kind of stick out without the petticoat and it might make your hip area look funny.

I like the idea of a sash but I don’t think that green one is going to work with red shoes. Also, as someone else mentioned, your waist looks smaller with the white one. I vote no on the green sash.

While I do love all things green, I think in this case it breaks up the line of your body too much. Your seamstress may be able to cut down the petticoat and reduce the fullness at little, but you definitely need something there to shape the dress properly.

On a totally non-related topic, what did you end up deciding on for your veg option? (I think this popped into my head b/c I missed lunch today!),/i>

i vote “Yes” to the green sash.

I’m all for some color!

i did a lot of scrolling up and down thinking about the petticoat. i’m not one for a bunch of volume. in fact, i plan to nix the petticoat for my own pick-up style dress…..but the petticoat does seem to make the pickups look better.

(scrolls up to double check)

yeah. i like the way the pickups look with the petticoat vs without.

Petticoat with white sash.

The colored sash cuts you in half and is not as flattering as the thinner white one.

I’m with rosychicklet, Amandine, and Jessie:

I vote yes to the petticoat (it makes the skirt look right)

And no to the colored sash.

To me, the dress looks more flattering without the green sash….plus you don’t want to get too Christmasy with green/red combo. Even the way you are standing in the “no colored sash” picture suggests that you are more comfortable/confident without it.

But having said all that, of course you can’t go wrong either way. :)

Yes to the Petticoat, it makes your waist look so teeny tiny! (not that it wasn’t before)

And yes to the white sash…

Definitely yes to the petticoat. Without it, the dress looks limp. As for the sash, it looks great, but I second Mary’s concern for the Christmasy red/green.

No sash, petticoat.

The sash is too much on you, but the dress doesn’t look like it sits right without the petticoat.

And red shoes will make up for the little bit of flair that the sash gives!

My vote is sash & Petticoat. I think the petticoat makes the dress look fuller and I think the sash adds just the right amount of color. Although, with red shoes I’m not so sure…

No sash. Yes petticot.

I think the sash competes more than compliments the dress.

I’m normally not a fan of petticots, but I think the style of the dress needs to be filled out… otherwise the pickups look a little droopy… like “pickdowns”… :-)

I think the dress falls better with the petticoat. The gathered layers look a little limp to me without it. I actually like the sash in the first photo - almost white but not (pale blue, I think, and the veil seemed to match). It would also be pretty with a pale gold sash, and I know there are pale gold veils, as I have one (and gold shoes). I like the look of a little contrast, but not necessarily the huge contrast of the darker green. Could you do a pale green, if green is what you want?

I vote no sash, and no petticoat, or wear the petticoat for the ceremony but not the dance and reception if you can easily take it off.

No to the sash, it does nothing to add to the dress (and actually takes away). Keep the petticoat otherwise the dress just kind of hangs like a sack.

no sash, for the breaking-up-your bodyline reason (but I do love that green. Use it as a bouquet wrap or something–it’s such a great color).

yes petticoat, but you certainly could get a bit of volume taken out of it if you’re not comfortable in it. you want to feel comfortable and GORGEOUS that day.

hmmmm…I like the idea of the sash, but this one seems really big. Can you have the smaller sash dyed to match the larger sash? I think I would like that the best ;) Then you get the color, but aren’t overwhelmed by the volume of the sash.

Oh, and yes on the petticoat, too.

PS - you look stunning.

NO sash, it clashes with the red shoes and it’s not really needed. If you do a sash, find a wide ribbon that matches the shoes and make something simpler and not as over-the-top.

YES petticoat… it shapes the dress and will prevent unwanted shadows in photos. You can always take it off later in the evening for dancing, but wear it for the ceremony and photos.

lol - i think at this point you’ve understood that it is a very VERY individualized thing. go with your gut. I think the sash is beautiful and the petticoat fills out the shape of the dress. Its YOUR wedding and YOUR photos… you are going to have to figure out which way YOU like it - not everyone else.

No sash and yes a petticoat. The reason I chose this is for one reason only, both of those things make you look thinner. The sash adds width to your middle and draws your attention to the widest area of you, causing you to look bigger than you are. The petticoat on you also creates more on an A-line frame, which on nearly any bride makes you look way thin. Without the petticoat it does not create a fullness needed to show off the slimness of your waist. JMHO! Regardless you look beautiful!

No sash.

Re: Petticoat– it make the dress fuller but is also there to make walking easier - how abut a smaller petticoat like the one below with an adjustable hoop size. I bought this exact one and it worked out beautifully.

No sash! I agree with Mary (response #13) that the green sash and red shoes could be a little Christmas-y. Plus, I think that the no-sash option is much more sophisticated.

As for the petticoat, wear what makes you feel comfortable! Luckily, my dress doesn’t need a petticoat (it would look weird), but when I tried on dresses that did need one, I was so hot!

First of all, I love your dress! You look great in all the options! Secondly, I say no to the sash. I think you look taller without it. Finally, I think you should definitely do the petticoat. It looks great! Without it, the skirt just seems a little flat to me.

Yes, yes, yes to the petticoat. Your dress just kinda droops without it, and it’s so cute and perky with it.

I’m not really feeling the sash though. I think it would be too much with red shoes, and I also think that your waist looks much smaller with just the white one.

I can’t remember what your bridesmaids are wearing, but why do you want to do a green sash and red heels? Is there a reason for this that we aren’t remembering? I just don’t see those colors going together (except for the aforementioned Christmas).

Definitely yes to the petticoat. Is it actually a hoop skirt? That should keep some of the weight and heat off you.

Wowweee ! Thanks for the replies, all! I think the opinions were fairly spread out, but it sounds like the consensus is: no sash, yes petticoat. And you know what? I think I agree!!!

Haha, it looks like a much darker green in these pictures - it’s actually like a light sage. And my colors are light sage and red, which I pROMMiise doesn’t look too Christmas-y :)

Beanchar - I ended up going with a vegetable lasagna - and so far, it’s beating out one of our meat dishes. Go veg! :)

I vote for green sash, no petticoat. Seeing the picture without it, i notice the difference. The fuller skirt seems to make you look bigger than I think you are. The no petticoat sort of makes you more proportionate.

No to the green sash - you look positively STATUESQUE without it. Plus the attention is drawn to your face rather than the sash, which cuts you in half.

Yes to the petticoat - the skirt looks fluffier… plus you just LOOK more confident in the pictures with it (you must think the same… subconsciously!).

I am late joining the party; I like the green it is a great color - however, with the photos I like the all white - as it makes your eye focus on you and not the color - the all white is BEAUTIFUL on you (so the green) but I vote no sash.
As for petticoat - I say wear it! When else where you get to wear one?! And it looks great !

First of all, I love your dress. I got my dress at Filene’s running of the brides, but that exact dress was my back up. The dress I got also has the long sashes and I have been totally overwhelmed by what kind of veil to where. I am not sure if I am going to let my sash tails lay flat or tie a bow in the back. I don’t want a really long veil. But I wasn’t sure what length would be good. What does your’s look like?

No- Sash
Yes- Petticoat

i know exactly what you mean about the petticoat. i went to a few traditional bridal shops and was so overwhelmed by all the different apparatus needed to hold that dress up. everything felt so heavy, uncomfortable and tight. i couldn’t breath! i tried on a dress just like yours in DB with pick ups and tried it without the petticoat and the dress fell flat and was dragging.

i decided these types of costumes were just not for me. i couldn’t do it.

i also was dead set that i had to have a lovely black sash. i’ve seen so many pretty black/white dresses, but the dress i bought looked awful with it so i have nixed that idea. it cut me up funny whereas with other gowns it made my waist look small and elegant.

it just depends on the gown.

have you decided on jewelry. i suggest bold green jewelry. that would look awesome!

either way you’ll look great. you’re going to be a beautiful bride no matter what you wear.

I have that same dress! I got a smaller sash because I felt that that one was way to big for my small frame. Also, I’d keep the petticoat.
