The Power Of The Veil

March 31st, 2008 @ 8:32 am by Mrs. Petunia

I only wore my veil for the ceremony and our formal shots (where the wind kicked it around like a kite in flight, argh). I do wish though that I would have worn it longer. It’s like some mystical shroud you’d really only wear on the day of your wedding, and that alone seems to make it special.

I know some brides skip the veil altogether, but something about putting one on just made me feel more “bride-y.” What do you think: to veil or not to veil?

Your veil is just so pretty– I love the lace detailing. You are a beautiful bride!

I really wish I could have worn my veil longer as well…as it was, it blew all over the place during the ceremony and then I was so frustrated with it pulling on my head that I took it off before we got any pictures of it!

But I wouldn’t have done it without the veil…you are right…it just made me FEEL like a bride!

To veil! I just picked out mine this weekend. I’m going all the way with it — cathedral length with blusher. But it’s a drop veil, so hopefully not overwhelming or too bee keeper-esque. Trying it on with my dress definately made me feel like a bride!

With some of the past symbolism of the veil, I’m not comfortable wearing it personally, though I have seen some beautiful ones out there. As it is, I am considering a birdcage veil, but I don’t think it’d really “go” with my dress. So I’m going to be making a sort of headband out of tulle/lace that will hang down my back to give a sort of pseudo-veil-y appearance yet still be thoroughly “me”!

What a beautiful veil! I wasn’t going to have one but having tried one on last week, I’m a convert!

I absolutely did not want a veil. However, I was somehow talked into “just trying” an elbow length veil with my dress. It just sits up on the back of my head and hangs down the back - nothing over the face. Since my dress is ivory, the veil itself is champagne, with gold edging (and I will have gold shoes). I loved it from the first. It does look very bridal (FI keeps reminding me that IS the idea), but in a very nontraditional way.

That is a gorgeous veil!

I know what you mean about the “power of the veil.” It really did make me feel like I was getting married. Weird, I know, but it did.

I also took it off for the reception but I put it back on for most of our pictures.

I didn’t consider myself a “veil” bride, but seriously when will there be another time to wear it? I agree with you, longer is better. For a long time I thought I wanted a birdcage, but after seeing the single layer cathedral veils, they are just so elegant and timeless. You look beautiful, Mrs. Petunia!

I put on a veil at a bridal shop and just never got the ‘I’m a bride’ feeling. I ended up with a small comb in my hair.

My hair dresser said that there are two kinds of brides she sees: veil brides and hair brides…I guess I was a hair bride.

I’m definitely not a veil bride. I’m extremely uncomfortable with some of the patriarchal symbolism behind many wedding traditions, so I’m going to pass. That being said, I don’t necessarily think many people nowadays interpret them in the old fashioned way…and I think some veils are simply gorgeous.

I think it’s like Angel said, I’m a hair bride! I LOVE hair so much, I specifically chose my dress to accomodate my long blonde locks. Oh that sounds a little crazy now that I’ve said it…

I’m a no veil girl, myself, but I love how it looks on you. You are seriously just such a striking bride.

To veil! When else will you ever be able to wear one? I feel like a veil is the difference between looking like you are in a beautiful ballgown and looking like a bride. That being said, I have seen some people pull off the no veil look nicely:)

I love your veil! Where did you purchase it?

I can’t even concentrate on the veil b/c I’m so gobsmacked by your gorgeousness. Tell me you are wearing false eyelashes! Surely no one has that lushness naturally?

I think a veil is a must, even if it is a $20 piece of tulle that you hot glued to a clip from michaels. Just for a few pictures, you might regret not having it down the road. I plan to do the birdcage veil. I feel like it’s meeting the veil/no veil debate right in the middle!

I completely agree about the veil’s power. Once we put it on, my bridesmaids said, “you went from bride to BRIDE”. There’s just something magical about the vision of a girl in a veil!
