About Mrs. Cupcake

Wow. That’s A Lot Of Glass.

March 31st, 2008 @ 5:36 pm by Mrs. Cupcake

You may recall that I have been on the hunt for cut glass to use as candle holders at our reception. Actually, more specifically, Mr. Cupcake’s mom has graciously been doing most of the hunting — I’ve just been transporting everything to our storage space (a.k.a. Momma Cupcake’s basement) once FMIL Cupcake hands over her magnificent finds during each of our visits to Central PA. She has been doing some serious bargain hunting and has admittedly become a cut glass addict!

This weekend I decided to finally get out all of the pieces she has found during her weekly trips to the Salvation Army (with the exception of a handful that Mr. Cupcake and I found at some random yard sales and flea markets) to figure out what our grand total is. Mr. Cupcake and I headed over to Momma Cupcake’s basement the other day to take the pieces out of their boxes, set them out on the table to survey the collection, and start counting.

Let me tell you. We have a LOT of glass.

The whole shebang laid out on a table in the basement. Mr. Cupcake counted them all…. wanna guess how many?

A close-up shot. (You still counting?)

Another detail shot…. we have five of these cool big ones (shown in the middle). We might use them for the tables set up in the cocktail area and put floating flowers in them instead of candles. (Last chance to come up with an estimate before I reveal the grand total.)

So….. drumroll please….. our grand total iiiiiissssss……

245. Yes. Two hundred forty-five. Pieces. of. Glass! Do you believe it??

We have more than enough for ten pieces per table if we have about 20 tables, and the rest can be scattered on the mantle in the ballroom, the cocktail tables, and random little nooks that need some ambiance lighting.

I am so very excited about this detail. I think it will add some personalized pizazz to the space and a bit of the vintage flair that we’re looking to infuse into everything.

Momma Cupcake and I made a little mock-up of a centerpiece to see how ten candles will look around each floral arrangement. We admittedly did not think this through very well…. we grabbed anything white or green from the two floral arrangements she happened to have in her house, threw them into a bowl, and scattered the glass around them. We didn’t have votives but added some tea lights to get an idea of how everything would look. Even though it was a little haphazard, it still gave me a good idea of how everything will look and I’m quite happy.

Picture a darker room, an ironed linen, a more well thought-out floral arrangement, and a larger table with China, menus and napkins :-) Perfect, right?

I think we have ruled out our original plan of pouring our own candles, because we realized how time-consuming it will be and it really won’t save us much money after all. Votives will do the trick just fine, and we’ll just have to find a few different sizes to work with the varying sizes of the glass pieces. Hopefully, doing this will also save us some sanity!

How are your DIY projects coming along? Are you finding them satisfying and fulfilling, or just plain frustrating and time-consuming?

Wow, that’s a lot of glass. Now the trick will be to stop buying it when you’re out.

My most frustrating DIY project was the invites. The most satisfying were the favors, ring pillow and my MOH gift.

Ahhh! Ms. Cupcake you are divine! I LOVE this idea. I actually had this idea niggle in the back of my brain the last time I went to a bookstore in town that also has a “treasure” room. I always see cut glass pieces in there and I thought “Hmm…wouldn’t it be a nice touch to use these at my wedding somehow.” Our wedding theme is Garden Glam and after seeing your mock-up table, I think the cut glass would lend a sense of vintage charm to the whole affair. I am so excited for you! This really is lovely!!! And go Momma Cupcake for her dedication…wow.

No question, this will be fabulous. I did something similar (although with plain glass) and we had over 700 pieces by the time we were done. The effect was stunning, as no doubt yours will be. Good luck!

@Shelbystar: I can’t let Momma Cupcake get away with the credit, although she is fabulous for storing everything in her basement…. it’s actually Mr. Cupcake’s mom, my FMIL, who has been purchasing all this goodness for me! If you find a Salvation Army that gets a regular turnaround of this kind of thing, you’d be amazed at how much you can accumulate for very little money if you pop in weekly! (She has gotten some pieces for 10 cents, some for 25 or 50…. she refuses to spend more than $1 per piece! Unless it’s something REALLY spectacular :-) )

We’re doing the same thing for our wedding. I haven’t counted, but by the looks of it, we probably have about the same amount you do. I went to one local thrift store, and filled up three shopping baskets (the hand-held kind) with cut glass (and a couple of pieces of milk glass, which I’m using for the centerpieces). I was all embarrassed when I went up to the register, and told the guy it was for my wedding so he didn’t think I was a nut case who hoards glass. When I asked him how much for all of it (worried, because many had no price tags), he said “$8.00 for everything”!!! Too bad I had wiped them out of cut glass. =)

Don’t even get me started on how much milk glass I have, either. My entire kitchen table, and the surface of my hope chest, and part of my kitchen counter is covered in milk glass.

Originally, I was going to pour candles into the cut glass, too. But our venue said the lip of the container had to be an inch above the flame. So, I’m doing tea lights. I found a website that has soy tea lights that burn for 7 hours. I figure 5 hours is the most we’ll need.

Those are beautiful! They look so sweet with the votives in them - and the overall look on several tables will be gorgeous!

I love all those different pieces! Good job to Mama Cupcake and to you for assembling that great collection.

I wanted to pass on a superstition my linen rental lady shared with me–it’s considered “good luck” to have an odd number of candles on the tables, so she recommended we do 5 votives per table rather than the 6 we had planned. (I think that’s also why if you get Jordan almonds or something as a favor they’re almost always an odd number.) So if you’re into things like that, 9 or 11 are better numbers than 10 for your tables.

And the soy tea lights are great!

@Erica: I will likely keep a handful of my favorites for display in our home, and maybe sell the rest to a Philly bride with the same idea :-)

Whew! And although the thought of coming home for a long weekend and helping you pour wax for 245 pieces of glass sounded great and could perhaps be the funniest project ever (”help, I burned my arm, AGAIN!!”) I’m happy to see you’ve decided to go with the votives.

They look fabulous!

P.S. My un-burnt arms thank you! ha ha:)
