Much Ado About The ‘Do

April 1st, 2008 @ 11:15 am by Mrs. Hummingbird

As I have mentioned before on this blog, I have a bit of a love hate relationship with my hair. Because I have had such a hard time with it in the past, I have generally kept it short and low maintenance. Basically, I shampoo and condition it as part of my daily routine, but other than that no styling or products whatsoever.

Since the wedding is not just any day, I want to jazz things up a bit, but as I do not have the long flowing Barbie bride hair seen in most wedding styles, my options are a little more limited. (My hair can currently be pulled into a short stubby ponytail.)

With this in mind, I’ve been scouring the internet for pictures that caught my follicle fancy and found a few that might work, but because I am not a hair girl, I figure I would put it out to the hive and get some more expert opinions on the matter.

We have:

z138967
A textured piecey look.

z13896701
A pulled back tight curl look.

z138545
A short updo with wavy bangs.

z723703
A bejeweled pixie cut.

z13896702
Short hair ringlets.

z128477
Pulled back curls.

z13896703
A voluminous bob.

z13896704
A half up half down bob.

z402928
A beachy waved updo.

z13896705
A short bob with swept bangs.

z13896706
A textured swept bob.

z13896707
A bouncy curl bob.

z13896708
A pin curl wave.

z13896709
A short blunt cut.

z138967010
A mod bob.

So, take a gander and weigh in on the great Hummingbird Hairdo Hunt of 2008! Which one is your favourite?(Pictures courtesy of Brides.com and The Knot)

Beachy waved updo would look great with your dress!!!! love the flower

I LOVE the beachy wavy up do!

3.
Chrissie says:

I really like the first one. The piecey, textured looks seems very you.

4.
Melanie says:

The short wavy updo would really soften your wedding day look, and be very elegant and flattering on you. The beachy one isn’t bad as a second choice - minus the extremely loud plumerias.

Lynn says:

I like the ones that have a slight wave or curl like the pin curl and textured wave bob. Have you considered a vintage look like a finger wave with a flower or vintage clip?

6.
jess says:

either the textured, piecey look or short blunt cut.

Sharmeen says:

I like the beach wave, if that’s what the vibe of your wedding is. Personally, I like the Victorian look with a delicate crown of flowers or a comb, sorta like a combination of the 3rd and 6th picture.
btw, isn’t that Samantha Francis in the 3rd pic?

Nstar says:

While I agree that the textured, piecey look seems very “you”, it seems too close to what your “everyday hair” is, so if you want something a little more special or different for your wedding, I think you should go for one with a bit of a wave, after a hair trial to make sure it looks fabulous of course :) !

Linda says:

Either the short updo with wavy bangs or a mod bob.

10.
Vanna says:

The bottom one is what I’m shooting for my own wedding hair (BTW that’s Ivy Robinson, a planner from “Who’s Wedding” whose own wedding is featured on theknot !)

Elizabeth says:

I love the Beachy Wave! So fresh and will probably hold up.

Miss Jenny says:

Ooh! I love the beachy wave, the sort updo with wavy bangs, and the bouncy curl bob!

Mrs. Radish says:

Ha, that’s the same way I am about my hair. I’m so not girly in that way. I ended up wearing a glorified pony tail for our wedding because I just wanted to keep it real ;)

Anyway… I think the “pin curl wave” would look great on you and with your dress. The “mod bob” could also work with maybe a little wave to it.

Since your dress is lacey and has a romantic feeling, I think a little bit of curliness/waviness would be nice. Does you hair curl or wave easily?

linda says:

bejeweled pixie!

15.
Sarah says:

I dig the pin curl wave, but it looks like something that wouldn’t necessarily age well throughout the evening.

ayu says:

pincurl wave!

tea says:

i like the third one!

18.
Stephanie says:

I like the “short updo with wavy bangs” and the “bejeweled pixie cut”.

I like the short updo with wavy bangs and the bejeweled pixie cut. So much so that I am saving them to my computer to use as inspiration for my own hair. I too am stuck in the short hair boat.

missking says:

I prefer the short updo with wavy bangs and the bejeweled pixie cut.

For some reason, “mod bob” is speaking loudest to me– fun, a little more “done” that your usual look but not too fussy and with a touch of Hummingbird sass. ;)

22.
jnicholea says:

I think the mod bob would look really cute on you.

23.
Annie says:

I like the short updo with wavy bangs the best. It’s dress and off your face enough to show of your wedding day glow!

Bejeweled pixie or Short blunt cut!

My favs are the 1st (textured look) and the 8th (1/2 up, very cute and sweet!).

Miss Hummingbird says:

@Mrs. Radish: My hair is actually naturally wavy once it grows out past my shoulders so it can be styled that way yes. It just usually requires a bit of product since it is thin and not that agreeable. :P
@Lynn: I am currently on the hunt for a cute and colourful clip, but haven’t found anything that quite makes me squee yet. Any suggestions?

Alexis says:

Thank you so much for posting this. I to have short hair and have been wondering how I am going to style my hair for the big day. I love the bejeweled pixy cut or the short updo with waves

Best Lady says:

I am a SUCKER for the pin curl or Marcel waves. Absolutely love that time period for hair and I think it would look good with your dress. Artificial curls scare me (sorry if you were leaning in that direction!!!!)

29.
tberry says:

The bejeweled pickie or the pin curl

Dulaman8 says:

Beachy waved updo or the pulled back curls one. I am so glad that you did this blog! I have short hair, also. I am trying to grow it out, but there is only so fast your hair can grow!!

31.
mrswhitetobe says:

short updo with wavy bangs or pin curl wave. i think the sophistication will work well with your dress.

32.
Linda says:

My vote: A short updo with wavy bangs.

33.
MrsJones says:

Love the bejewelled pixie, still seems like your hair, only more refined. Think its perfect as you’ll still look like yourself.
Definately not the first one, too dated, like you’ll look back and know what year you got married in as that was an ín’ hairstyle. Also, just my opinion, but it kinda looks like she just didn’t shower that morning and couldn’t be bothered to do anything with her hair.

34.
Thea T says:

i have short hair too, and will be going with vintage-y pin curls or finger waves. i love the look and think it would look beautiful w/ your lace dress!

MooShoo72 says:

Bouncy burly bob would be my favorite! But I feel ya on the hairdo hunt. I’ve been growing my hair out now for about a year for this wedding but I still have no idea what to do with it.. I just figured it was safe to work with more rather than less. But I’m telling ya: I’m cutting about 12 inches of it off the first day after the wedding! I’m not trouncing around a tropical island with crazy-long hair. Too hot!

36.
MooShoo72 says:

That would be curly bob, not burly bob. That’s a whole other beast…
