Single For Now…

April 1st, 2008 @ 5:12 pm by Mrs. Penguin

Eew, sorry to remind you that tax day is coming up, but here’s a little gem for all you brides to look forward to…

z139121

Thats right. A new year, a new status.

Things like this (clicking a silly little box) get me pretty dang excited. I had to rent a car this weekend to drive down to L.A., so I picked up the car while Mr. Penguin was still at work. The rental agent asked if anyone else would be driving the car. I said that perhaps Mr. Penguin would drive part of the way, to which the rental agent replied, “if you are married, he does not need to show us his ID, but if you’re not, just have him pop into any Enterprise Rent-a-Car location to record his drivers license information.”

Of course we never did that, so I had the pleasure of driving all 12 hours of the trip to and back. But when we’re married, you’ll find me snoozing away in the passenger seat the next time we have to rent a car :)

What are some little “perks” that you’re looking forward to taking advantage of once you’ve tied the knot?

Tax breaks!

Never having to file for another visa or visa extension again and down the road both of us having duel-citizenship!

I am definitely NOT looking forward to checking off the “married” box on next year’s tax returns. Those horrible f*%#ers at the IRS will be increasing our taxes because we’re getting married. The government doesn’t like it when there are two successful people in a marriage - apparently they would prefer that I were barefoot and pregnant. Grrrrr. Makes me so annoyed!

Funny that Enterprise cares that you’re not married. Hertz told us that since we live together, they consider us married/partners already.

We filed federal taxes jointly, but state taxes singly, since [due to a long and boring story] we’re residents of different states. We got a huge giant federal refund we weren’t expecting, and then I paid $53 to my state, and he received $53 from his state. So we’re even.

My FH works for the local subway system. Once we’re married, I’ll get a pass that will allow me to ride the system for free. This is especially exciting because I’ve been riding this system 5 days a week for the last 10 years, almost — shelling out over $2,000 a year. So, not only will I get to ride free, I’ll have an extra $2k to spend each year, just from getting married! (I tease FH that I’m only marrying him for the free subway pass.)

@Kami:

Kami, I’m so sorry you’re getting screwed! I’m looking forward to the tax break as the first time we’ll file together (2009) my taxes will be filed in the US, his in Italy, but both as married.

I am NOT looking forward to future years where due to a STUPID American tax law, anyone with American citizenship has to pay taxes on money earned ANYWHERE in the world. As far as I know, the US is the ONLY country that subjects its citizens to taxes on money earned (and already taxed) in another country. Yep. That means double taxation. Didn’t we go to war re. taxation w/o representation??

I’m not sure we are affected by the so-called marriage penalty to any great extent. We make about the same salary, and together will make right about 300k. I calculate a tax difference of about $1500 due only to changing our filing status from single to married filing jointly. Other things hopefully balance out… for instance we will only have one mortgage to deduct. But then again, we will only have one mortgage to pay. And one utility bill, and one cable bill… I don’t anticipate the amount of money in our pockets changing significantly, although we are sending my 2007 taxes to his tax accountant to get her read on the situation.

hahaha! That cracks me up about you having to drive. We are excited to save money on our car insurance. And of course, health insurance.

Hah, I totally forgot that by marrying me, the boy gets free insulin for life. Also test strips, which run about $5/day. Yes, testing for diabetes is more expensive than treating diabetes.

Not looking forward to the tax bump. We both make enough that the IRS decided to eat some of our lunch as a punishment for getting married.

carrieitly - first 80k you earn outside the US are tax exampt from US taxation ( we asked the accountant because were plan to live abroad - my bf is American, I am not).

If it’s any comfort, I am a foreigner living and working in the USA and have to pay social security and medicare even though I am not eligible for either ( this is in addition to Fed & State taxes which I pay just like and as much as all Americans). For 2007 that was $8, 000 bonus to US govn’t from me alone (just in SS & Medicare). If you are foreigner and work here legally you get treated worse than 3rd class citizen. no joke !

So, once I get married no more visa, no standing in long lines with tourists going through customs even though I’ve lived here for 6yrs, no crappy treatment and a new name that won’t make people ask me “are you from …..?” anymore. These are just a few perks that I am looking forward to besides getting married. yay !

any other “foreign brides” marrying Americans out there ?

I’m with Carrietly, my husband just finished doing our taxes and we figured that we lost a small car to the marriage penalty. Sucks - we joked about getting a divorce so that we can use that money a really nice vacation every year, lol.

Count me as in with Kami as someone NOT looking forward to the higher taxes we are going to have to pay because we both work and make about the same amount of money. suzanno, that’s kind of comforting to hear . . . we are in a similar situation and I had heard our marriage penalty would be more like $10K. I hope you’re right!
