Drink Trials

April 3rd, 2008 @ 12:14 pm by Mrs. Lovebug

What’s funner than fun? Creating a signature drink. What’s funner than that? Going through an entire bottle of Ketel One in order to perfect it.Last night, we headed to a friend’s house, where we tapped the skills of an ex-bartender to put together our “Something Old, Something New…” drink menu (the idea for which I blatantly ripped off of Mrs. Raspberry). First, however, I had to gather up some totally unnecessary recent purchases…

cocktail napkins and

“love knot”crazy straws that look like this when looped:

Like I said, unnecessary. And believe me, I don’t want detail overkill at our wedding; I’d like it to be “well-edited”. But having only 70 guests has allowed us to indulge in a few of these fun extras. (Oh, and you’d better believe I’m going to take a straw over to our venue to measure it against their glasses so I can trim them, if need be.)

Arriving at our friend’s house, we saw she had set up a whole freakin’ mixology station for us to play at:

She quickly got to work shaking, stirring, testing, and tasting:

…and it wasn’t long before we had nailed an invention or two and settled on some classics. We’ve got…

SOMETHING OLD:

Pink Lemon Drop Martini

SOMETHING NEW:

The “Blushing Bride”
(a super secret mix of vodka, watermelon pucker, and some other yumminess that is written down somewhere)

We also settled on SOMETHING BORROWED: Prickly Pear Margaritas (my loose logic being that it’s “borrowed” from Mexico…?) and SOMETHING BLUE: The “Blue-Eyed Groom” (a wickedly yummy shot made with Mr. LB’s beloved Blue Curacao, pineapple juice, and something else I forgot). I used to joke that the only “something blue” I need is Mr. Lovebug’s eyes on me, walking down the aisle:

…and now it’s official. :)

Finally, as a non-aloholic option, we’ve got the “Sweetest Sparkler”:

(Which is really just Italian blood orange soda from Trader Joe’s.)

We then forced ourselves to drink all the leftover, discarded trials. Oh, and to practice our drunken wedding dancing:

We’ve got an open bar all night, including through the cocktail hour, and I know people typically stick with their favorite tried-and-true drinks. But it’s a option we thought would be nice to offer (I know I’d think it was cute), and we had a lot of fun putting them together. And that’s good enough for me. :)

By the way, if anyone can think of cuter, typewriter-themed names for these, please - have at it!

Those all look really great! I’m especially intrigued by the prickly pear margarita…. what do you put in there? I had prickly pear jam once and it made my toes curl in ecstasy!

I would love to try the watermelon one! Where did you get the pink straws?

Lambert Lemondrop, Blushing Blickensderfer, Blue-eyed Brother, Piccola Prickly Pear, Selectric Sparkler?

Yeah, I cheated on a few of these. ;)

Delish!

We can’t have alcohol at our wedding, so I love the “Sweetest Sparkler”!

Great work, LB. Will you be a “lit” lightning bug by the end of the night? ;-)

Melanie says:

You could go with brands of typewriters:

Corona
Hermes
Olivetti
Olympia
Remington
Royal
Underwood

or even components of typewriters:

Carriage - “Antique Carriage” (something old)
Escapement - “The Sweet Escapement”
Margin
Starwheel - “Starwheeltini”
Type Bar
Ribbon - “Blue Ribbon”

The possibilities are endless!

Lovebug, I ADORE that Tab glass! Where did you find it?

beanchar says:

Mags (and LB) the Tab glass was the firs thing that caught my eye too! I lurrrrv me some Tab (featuring BOTH asparteme AND saccharine– yay!) I would stock up whenever it went on sale at the Kroger.

But, having sworn off all sodas about 3 months ago, I had to content myself with a “vintage” Tab glass from ebay. It had the yellow Tab logo and was hour-glass shaped– a reference to the slim figure you would achieve by guzzling gallons of Tab-y goodness, I suppose.

Alas, my beloved glass got broken recently, so I guess my love affair is truly over. Oh Tab, I’ll always remember the good times…

LB, I love your drink ideas, though they do remind me of the wedding where I abandoned my usual scotch-on-the-rocks for adorable green appletinis— and spent the night on the floor of the hotel room. Sooo easy to overdo it on the “fruity” cocktails, so you might want to have them in limited supply just in case you have invited any stupid people like beanchar to your wedding! ;)

ummm… that should say “bathroom floor”…. ah memories…

AKPM says:

How many cocktail napkins are you ordering for 70 guests? We are having a cocktail hr and a full open bar throughout. Trying to figure out how many cocktail napkins to order.
Thanks!

Wow, we’re getting married on the same day! AND we’re both doing “Something Old, Something New, etc” drinks. ^_^

Our drinks are:
Something Old - Classic Martini
Something New - Lychee, Raspberry & Rose Martini
Something Borrowed - Sour Ume Plum Martini (we used the same logic you did, haha)
Something Blue - “Blue Moon” Martini

We’re going to get supplies & ‘test’ things out this weekend, hehe.

Miss Lovebug says:

@Dana: that I couldn’t tell ya: it’ll actually be premade in batches by our venue. I’m sure you can find a recipe online, though - I hear they’re killer.
@Kimberly: ForYourParty.com!
@AMK: omg! Too cute. If they weren’t so obscure (I’m assuming most of our guests wouldn’t get it), I’d be all over it.
@MissMandy: God I hope so.
@Mrs. Magnolia: Urban Outfitters I think? A few years back.
@Melanie: Oooh, super cute idea.
@AKPM: We actually only sprang for about a hundred, though I’d love to pick up enough to last the night..

MissV says:

So maybe I’m the dirty bird but did anyone else think of those pink bachelorette penis straws when they saw the pink straws? They’re kind of the same color :-)
