No Search Warrants, Please

April 7th, 2008 @ 4:56 pm by Mrs. Lovebug

Attention all federal agents: below please find photos of two versions of a CD I burned for personal use only, as allowable by law, to commemorate my April nuptials. The first is a simple sticker design using one of my engagement photos:

…and the second shows the same image, digitally burned onto the disc using LightScribe:

(I couldn’t decide which version I liked better.) Again, please note that these CDs will NOT be reproduced in large numbers and distributed at my wedding. They are part of a limited edition (of two!) for personal use only. Oh yeah, and if you’re curious as to what’s on them:

Thank you, and carry on with your fantastic super sensitive operations.

Humbly,

A tax paying citizen

I can’t decide which one I like more either. I love this idea though, I may steal it from you and since you don’t have a patent on it, there would be no alleged infringement.

Nice try on the preemptive strike, but I’m turning you into the US Copyright Office! (JK!) [Okay, that was way too much legalese for one day.]

Attention federal agents:My sister burned 145 cd’s of music onto cd’s to give away at her wedding for favors. Whoops. Before you take action, please know that my mom still (6 years later) listens to that cd all of the time.

I think number 2 has more “wow” factor! Plus, some cd players (like the cruddy one in my car) don’t like to play cds with labels on them…

Attn Fed Agents I like the first picture the best! The colors are perfect.

Some CD players (especially the ones in cars that the CD just slides into the magic slot) may have issues with the stick-on label depending on how thick it is. And, in the past, I have seen players that run so hot that the sticker starts to peel off. :( I’m not sure if this is still a problem or not (improved CD players + improved sticker adhesive???). Just thought I’d mention it. I love the burned version more anyway! :D

I love the look of the lightscribed one. You know they make it so that it does it in color?? They’re absolutely awesome in color! FI’s parents have 2, one regular and one that does it in color. The regular one they used the cd’s with the prism top on to make it look even better.

would you mind sharing about the sleeve? where do you buy them, how do you print on them …. etc.

The light scribe one is both intriguing and awesome. Okay so is the sticker one. But I really like the 2nd one!

I don’t think I have ever seen anyone do lightscribe before. I saw the commercials a few years ago, and thought it looked cool. I think it looks really professional!

I would burn personal CD’s, except my guy is really ethical and would never be okay with it. You go though!

GetMarried4Less says:

well, i guess we are completely unethical over here!

i’m totally burning cds for my wedding favors.

i’ve been slowing getting the cds and plan to use http://www.bighugelabs.com thru Flickr to make a cool cd pocket out of heavy cardstock (its under the cd label link).

I’m still unsure what to do about the actual cd. I was considering a sticker like your option 1, but not sure where to go to get one…..off to Google I go!

(on the back of all of my diy projects, i should throw a tag that says “Brought to you by Google” lol….)

I am going to go with option 1

Holiday Rooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad!

Love it.

I also made a couple CD’s for the wedding day that we listened to for getting ready, etc.

I *happen* to know that this place, CDROM2GO, link here: http://www.cdrom2go.com/Services/Print-Services/Disc/

does a really fantastic job of printing photos and graphic designs onto CDs. I highly recommend their “PhotoPro” printing process option - looks fabulous! They had great customer service. The only catch, is that the minimum order is 100, so your, ahem, limited runs, would have a lot of extras…but they make great storage media for wedding photos, etc.!

I also recommend sleevetown.com, link here:
http://www.sleevetown.com/cardboard-cd-sleeve.shtml

for inexpensive, plain white cardboard sleeves that you can jazz up in all sorts of ways. White Aisle sells the same sleeves for more…

I have to lodge my vote under “no stickers, even tho’ they look really pretty” — I experienced the whole “stuck in the car CD player” thing and totally panicked! I’m really intrigued by the LightScribe thing…are they expensive?

why not make one of each?

I made *one* copy for my wedding day and used printable cds. my *one* cd turned out fantastic and I didn’t have to worry about a label getting stuck in a cd player and I got to use color. Of the two, I like the first one best, although I would think that the lightscribe one would eventually last longer, and there is no ink to rub off.

Okay, okay, I can’t hold back.

Besides the fact that the penalty for copyright infringement can top out at a whopping $150,000 and five years in prison, a better reason not to illegal make and distribute phonorecords, if I may spout jargon for a moment, is that it doesn’t support the artists you claim to love.

To paraphrase an anti-photocopying rant from a music publisher, burning a bunch of CDs and handing them out is basically say “Dude, I totally love this band! That makes me want to give Memorex money!” If you like the band, support the band. Don’t steal from them.

‘zilla: lightscribe in color?! oooh. THAT would be the winner, fo sho..

teacherbride: nothing fancy there. just printed, photocopied, and Xyroned the track list to the sleeves, which I purchased at Office Max.

J. says:

Oh yes, my heart bleeds for the artists that are losing my $17…they might have to have a mansion with 17 bedroom, rather than 20! Oh the humanity!

Get over it.

AlliNY says:

@ Sarah

But you aren’t going to buy 150 copies of a band’s single to hand out to your wedding guests… but putting ONE of their songs on a mixed CD could turn someone on to the group. I’ve found some of my favorite bands through my friends mix CDs.

I love the lightscribe…how do you do it?
