About Mrs. Flamingo

All Dolled Up

April 8th, 2008 @ 8:28 am by Mrs. Flamingo

Saturday was my day to get all dolled up. I had my hair trial and then I was going to my friend’s house for my makeup trial. I’ve been anxiously awaiting this day for awhile. When I arrived at the salon, I didn’t know exactly what I wanted. I knew I wanted to have something vintage inspired, a low bun, and it had to be on the side. I just hoped for the best and let my hairdresser do her magic.

I originally wanted some sort of wave in my do (on my bangs) but my hairdresser wanted to do without it. She said it would most probably not stay since it’s loose and flowy. I wasn’t too sure about that, but maybe she just didn’t understand what I was saying. Anyway I present to you my do:

(Please note - I’m not wearing any makeup here - and I look horrible)

Front with little hairs everywhere (that won’t be there day of)

(slight turn)

back (my comb will be placed on top of the bun)

(slight turn - full bun view)

I like it. I really do. I think it’s pretty, elegant and partly vintage-y. Plus, I’m going to add my fantastic comb and it will all fit together. I still think that some waves on my bangs could be really interesting. What do you think? Input please :)

Afterwards, I went to my friend’s house for my makeup trial. I’m a makeup freak - I mean I’ve got tonnes and tonnes of it. At first I was planning on doing my own makeup (I’m the makeup person in my family… I’m even doing my stepmother’s makeup on my wedding day - lol) but my friend took a course and I wanted her to take part in my wedding. When I asked her if she could do my makeup, she was so honored.

I’m a person who loves to wear eye makeup. I love to have dramatic looking eyes, so whether it be smokey eyes, turquoise eyeshadow or fake lashes I’ve done it all (and on a daily basis). My family and friends are used to seeing me with lots of eye makeup, so I can’t really go with the natural look… (it just isn’t me.) My makeup was done in purple tones, but it will be changed to pink tones on the wedding day. Either way it will be very similar to this:

What a difference makeup makes. It’s crazy.

close up - look at those lashes (if only I could wear fake lashes everyday)

And finally the finishing touch - the veil

Some of you may be thinking it’s a lot of makeup, but I think she did a great job. I will go natural with the lip color (a light pink /semi gloss) like I am wearing in the picture.

Do you like it? Were you happy with your trials the first time around?

I *love* your hair! It looks beautiful. And yes, what a difference makeup makes- I think that every morning when I wake up and look at myself in the mirror…sad, but true.

I love it! Your hair is beautiful–I especially like how in the slight turn & back shots your highlights really show off how the hair is twisted & folded into the bun. I also love lots of eyemakeup so I’m all about your false lashes!!

I love your hair it looks wonderful…

Very pretty! I’m a big fan of fluttery lashes myself, though I’ve never attempted false ones. ;) The smoky eyes look sexy but not overdone. You’ll look gorgeous on your day!

It looks great! As for your bangs, do you have a picture of what you’re thinking of (fingerwaves?). If it’s fingerwaves, I think that’ll look just as good as the straight bangs.

I think you look beautiful. I had three makeup trials at different places until I found what I loved. Your wearing some nice color on your eyes (and looking fabulous at it!) is making me feel better about doing the same as well.

How did you choose the lavender? Is it one of your colors?

Sarah M. says:

Oops, just re-read about changing to the pink tones!

I love your hair! It sounds like it will work perfectly with your vision. Encourage the stylist to try the wave in your bangs, I think it could add a lot of interest and you can decide later after you’ve at least seen it. I think the make up application is wonderful, but I’m not fond of the frosted eye-shadow. Something either more matte or shimmery rather than frosted would look fresher I think. That may change once it’s in pink though. Your friend did a great job.

Looks good, but I agree you need some wave to your bangs. I know what you’re talking about…try and find a picture to bring to them next time so they know what you mean. I think it will look more elegant and natural then just the stragiht pulled back bangs.

Girl, you are gorgeous! Buuut…I have a few suggestions that you might want to consider. The hairstyle is awesome, I love the kind of woven part leading into the curls, but I think to successfully pull off the side-bun, the whole thing needs to be just a bit looser and lower. Otherwise, it looks less intentional and more “oops, my hairstylist went crosseyed for a minute”. And as for the eyeshadow, if you want to go pink, definitely try it out before your wedding day, as I seem to remember someone in a makeup interview saying that reds and pinks should never been worn near the eyes (this could be a total urban legend, but better safe than sorry!)…maybe try more of a smoky brown/mauve rather than a true pinky pink? It would definitely provide more drama and romance than a pastel alone (or with black eyeliner) could.

I agree with some of the prior posters, you look gorgeous! I love the hair. The only criticism, I hope constructive, that I can give is on the eyeshadow. I think it is really drawing attention away from your eyes by making me look at the eyeshadow, but not your eyes. I think your makeup artist should put a more neutral color near the browbone. Have a trial with another makeup artist before the big day and see what they think - even if it is just at your local Bobbi Brown counter! Good luck!

oh la la! Me like! I love the hair! So perfect for you! I love fake lashes too! And the lip color is so soft yet sexy love it!!!! But I would be a bad friend if I didnt tell you I am not a huge fan of the eye shadow. It looks so pretty on you, but I dont know if it is wedding like. Pink make brown eyes pop but I dont know if that much of it needed on you. You may want to try a warmer color. But really over all so pretty! I cannot wait to see it all come together!

Thanks everyone for the input… Dont worry about my makeup everytime I see my friend we play around and do makeup trials. She will put less on the brown bone, like you suggested, and it wont be caked on like it is now.

We went from maroon color, then added some purple and tried to add pink at the end… so its alot and not what it will look like. I will most definitely have my friend do another trial. I will take a picture of it so that she will remember… pink looks awesome on me. Makes my eyes pop… plus pink breast cancer awareness color… im going all out with that included my makeup :)

For my hair, I will most defintely go a second time. I would like to see if the finger waves look nice. I love the hair its pretty… Im going to do my streaks this friday, because my hairdresser wants some where my hair is really brown (bottom left) maybe Ill talk to her then… keep you posted. And again thanks for all the input :D

Ooooh pretty. Love the hair.. I think your stylist should impart some waving in the front. It will add more interest and give more balance to the style. Also maybe just a tad looser and lower with the bun, it would be perfection. I love the lashes and lips. The eyes are great, seems more club-y to me but it’s about what YOU like. Is your wedding in the evening? You friend did a great job.

Nicole R. says:

I love your hair. The eyeshadow is nice, but you have such a pretty face you could make your eyes pop with a neutral taupe/champagne colored eye shadow w/ liner instead… you look great!

Ashley Lauran says:

If I were you, and I’m not, I would do a straight down the middle bun. It kind of looks lop-sided and like your hairdresser made a mistake with your veil on. Otherwise, you look beautimous!

tanya2s says:

I think the bun part of the hair should have more structured curls, or at least use larger pieces of hair in the curls. Right now it looks kind of messy, and you could still get the “loose, flowy” look with larger curls. I think a finger wave would look great in the bangs, but then you’d REALLY have to get a more structured bun for that 30’s look.

I LOVE the hair. The make-up is really pretty too.

Kayleigh says:

I think it’s beautiful but agree w/pp that the side bun looks lopsided, like it’s a mistake. also not a fan of the purple eyeshadow. Anyway, you’ll be a beautiful bride.

Kyle says:

Your makeup colors look great but I think you should consider maybe trying different lashes. They look a bit extreme. Have you heard of Thi Lush Lashes? I’m getting married and will use them, they look so great.

check it out at http://www.thicosmetics.com

But you look beautiful!

Kyle says:

Sorry, you can also find the lashes at
http://www.facesbytaylor.com , the artist has a video on the lashes!

Guilty Secret says:

You look gorgeous. I am all for going with what feels most ‘you’ rather than going for a certain look (e.g. natural) because that’s how brides are ’supposed to look’!

33.
Brady says:

By all means if you’re set on finger waves, go ahead- but trust your stylist! She’s a pro for a reason. When you do a second trial, if you do one with waves, try to do it early in the day and see if it lasts- remember you might also be dancing and smiling and possibly sweating at your wedding and you want to keep smiling and looking great!

I think the hairdo right as it is- it’s perfectly glam, and while I wouldn’t make the eyes so thick, it’s your thing, babe, so rock it!

34.
kate says:

Can I just say, I love the eyes! I’m also a person who loves to wear eye make-up, with the dramatic looking eyes and interesting colors. I think yours looks gorgeous and wedding-appropriate.

35.
beanchar says:

Another vote for a simple wave in the front. If you draw a diagonal line from the inside corner of your right eye (left eye in the pic) up to your hair, that’s where I’d like to see a little finger wave.

Getmarried4Less says:

i love your hair!!! your pic is giving me an idea and if you dont mind, i will assume you dont bc of the above post, i will clip your pic in my hair inspiration file…

i totally see where you’re going with the loose wave bang…..i think that will look sooo romantic. def find a pic and show it to her!

i love you eye makeup! i am definitely an eye makeup girl. i love the violets, turquoises, greens….pretty much anything other than your standard safe neutral. i’ll be doing lashes for my wedding as well!

to everybody else: i hear those with concerns above, but if you check out her last pic, which is taken…i’d guess at least 3 feet back, the eye makeup is perfect and NOT overpowering. keep in mind that no one is going to be 6 inches away from your face on the day of the wedding. You got to go a bit stronger to get an impact with pastel colors.

@Lime217: Hi Lime217, yes I am wearing foundation, concealer and pressed powder. The trick - use professional makeup. I only have MAC cosmetics in my makeup case and I used the following products: (and honestly I tell everyone about this foundation - light and covers alot)

Foundation:

Concealer:

Pressed powder:

Hope this helps!

I am impressed with how well your makeup matches your skin tone. No different between your face and your neck, which is something I always struggle with. Still haven’t decided if I am going to do my own yet.
