I’m A Stalker

April 8th, 2008 @ 5:08 pm by Mrs. Tiramisu

I love logging on to stalk my registries and see what’s been bought, and what’s listed in the “still need” category. What is it about getting married that makes me think I’ll suddenly have use for lots of kitchen gadgets, china, and fancy vases? My dad got such a big kick out of me putting a combination cake platter-punch bowl onto my registry that he bought it for me for Christmas. Now how many people can say their dad made such a purchase for them?

I’m going to have to fill this with cake often in order for
Mr. Tiramisu to stop questioning the usefulness of a cake dome.

I fell victim to the ever-popular Kate Spade Gwinnett Lane dishes.

My mom snapped these two up the day I added them.

This one is probably a pipe dream.

I promise I’ll act surprised when I open this Aunt Robbin!

We registered a few months back at Macy’s for everyday dishes, towels and bedding, Williams-Sonoma for kitchen stuff, Bed Bath and Beyond for china and some more kitchen stuff, and Lowe’s (Mr. Tiramisu’s wish). With 4 months left until the wedding, there has been a small dent made in the Macy’s registry, but most everything else is still there. My future mother-in-law’s friends are throwing us a big shower this month, and I’m sure I’ll be stalking in the days and weeks ahead to see what fun stuff disappears from the “still need” list.

I’m worried though, will it be tough to act surprised at the shower, since I’ll inevitably already know who is bringing what? There’s been a lot of talk on weddingbee about registry stalking… almost everyone has admitted to it. So what I want to know is, any non-stalkers out there? Please raise your hands and tell us- how do you keep from looking!?

Oh Lord. I hadn’t even thought about that! We are about to register, and I am so the little kid who peeks at the presents!

Hmmmm… well I would think that most people have issues mustering up a “woohoo” for mundane gifts anyway, so its the same as any other time you received something useful, though not necessarily exciting. (Me? I revel in the opening of the gift - regardless of what it is or if i know whats in it - i go bananas over fuzzy socks at Christmas. Yeah - im THAT girl.)

Maybe think of the things you’ll use it for and say something to the effect of

“I think I’ll make confetti cupcakes tonight with my cupcake pan!”

Be excited about the things you are going to use it for, not the surprise… until you are a good actress.

I’ve looked at the registry twice- once a couple of weeks ago to fix a couple of duplicates, and once after the shower to take off duplicates of things that people bought for us (like spatulas) that were not off of our registry.

Besides that, I’m not really tempted, because it is so much more fun to not know what people have bought.

Honestly, I haven’t checked my registry since it was created before Christmas. We need to add to it actually. Being 5 weeks out until the wedding, perhaps I just have too many other things on my mind…

..Where are those darn invitations!!!

I check CONSTANTLY. Multiple times a day, even. You know, just in case someone bought something on their lunch hour ;) However, I don’t think this will take away from the fun of the shower because: 1) I’ve been able to resist from looking at the “thank you note manager” — so I don’t know WHO bought be these things, and 2) I’m prepared to talk about why I registered for each thing when I open it :) This is only fun if it’s a kitchen gadget and you can point out little-known features the gift-giver may not have paid attention to — like, “the cake stand is also a punch bowl! Ta-da!”

I just had a shower and I had stalked almost daily till a week or two before the shower. Then not a peek. I went cold turkey. I had fun at my shower cuase everything was a surprise! I was getting pretty bad too, I practically had the sku numbers memorized! I went back the day or so after the shower to make sure everything had been checked off and to add a few more things, but as of now, I am a reformed stalker!

Hey, I have that exact mixer ( in red). I love it sooo much!

I was also a registry stalker and I did act surprised and I don’t think anyone suspected I knew. In retrospect, I wish I hadn’t looked and been able to really be truely excited.

Amazon creates this monster. They actually email you to say that someone has bought something off your registry….then you can peak to see what was bought, and look further to see who it was! It was easier to forget about the Macy’s registry, they didn’t send you emails to agonize over.

We have the same stuff on our regestries. Does that make us registry twins? :)

We are registered with BBB and Pottery Barn — neither one emails us with updates so it’s a lot easier not to stalk. They also don’t tell you anything about WHO bought what, even if you do log on to go check, so I won’t have to act surprised — I will be surprised (about the giver).

I am a registry stalker, but none of mine (as far as I know) keep track of WHO bought it for me… so I’m still excited. :) It’s been nice for me because I feel so relieved that we are getting gifts we want and NEED.

Wait a minute ladies, do all registries tell you who bought what? We haven’t set ours up yet and I guess I thought all it said was “completed” or “still needs.” It will be too much fun for me if I know who bought it too! When I was younger I was famous for re-wrapping gifts under the Christmas tree…

Hey! I have that cake stand/punch bowl! I love it! I haven’t used it as a punch bowl but have used it to upside down to hold salads, and a Trifle. Your dad is awsome!

I sooo would be a stalker…but we get an email every time someone gets something off our Honeyfund registry. Stalking preempted!

Great choices by the way. And there are PLENTY Of useful things to do with a cake dome when it’s not holding a cake that one day every six months. Just don’t ask me to list them.

I made a birthday wishlist on Wishpot (I know, kind of tacky, but he loved it because he knew exactly what to get me!). When people buy from it the website gives you the option of “hiding” what was purchased. To see what people have bought I would have to create a new fake account and pretend to want to buy something and I am not willing to go through all of that work.

I wish all registries worked like that, then I wouldn’t be able to cheat without a lot of work!

I bet it will be hard enough just to act suprised with everything that you have registered for. Just because you are the one that registered for it. I’m not a very good actor (actress)…hmm…this is going to be interesting:)

I check quite a bit, though I’ve convinced myself I have an excuse. FI and I are moving in less than a month, and if stuff is bought off of the registry, than I don’t have to pack and move the crappier version that I already have! Like, I saw someone bought our knives, so I’m going to give away/donate the bad knives I already have.

I still think it is a surprise as to who got us what. I’ve been surprised at people’s generosity. And for my shower, a lot of people bought gifts right before it, so I was surprised at the shower!

I stalked constantly, but never used the features (where available) that told who bought what, so there was an element of surprise. I was worried that I woudn’t look suprised enough at showers and stuff, but — in the end — you’re so giddy and excited and thrilled to have the stuff in your hands that it all works out. Plus, some people will surpirse you with non-registry items, too!

i registered for all those things you have on your list! ha. i’m really hoping someone splurges on the Dyson… my house is full of kitty hairballs.

Getmarried4Less says:

i have to start my registry soon and am a little worried about that.

in my culture a lot of people are last minute when it comes to gifts, so i could easily worry myself that no one is going to buy us anything a week or so before the wedding!

i will have to try very hard to excercise restraint.

Stephanie says:

I’ve been pretty good about not stalking. The problem is that my fiance is stalking… he just sent me an email that said “Another item has been purchased! Act surprised when you open the cookware set from my aunt and uncle”!

DeeDee says:

I am a guilty registry stalker… I told my sisters, who would be giving me my shower, to have the registry duplicated in another name and send out that fake name with the invite.. it’s one way of keeping us guilty stalkers from not knowing what’s being bought!
Well, I know when my shower is, This Sunday.. I t is supposed to be a surprise and they don’t know I know.. So, I am thinking how I am going to act surprised and hate the dreaded question from everyone, were you surprised??
