With A Little Help From My Friend

April 8th, 2008 @ 3:01 pm by Ms. Dahlia

I was a little nervous last week as my final dress fitting was quickly approaching, and while I love my dress, at the previous fitting in March, it had been snug. (Snug enough that I decided to have the seams let out just a little bit.)

So Friday morning, I actually went out and bought every pair of Spanx that might work under my dress at my favorite local department store. Power panties, Higher Power, Slim Cognito- I tried them all. And I also tried similar ones made by Wacoal and Bali. I’m talking about 9 or so pairs of these slimming sausage makers, coming in at the astounding price of nearly $500. Fear not, lest you think I’m spending almost as much on foundation garments as my dress- all are returnable with a receipt and the tags still on them.

I did a quick try on of all of the pairs just before leaving for my fitting, which led to the quick rejection of about 4 pairs, and one clear front-runner in the “slim my middle” contest.

At the salon, I tried on my dress, and it fit. Perfectly. Now, I’d like to attribute it to the fact that I’ve tried to watch what I eat, exercise a bit, and had the seams let out just a smidge, but that would be giving myself too much credit. No, the front-runner pulled through in an big way:

Spanx Hide and Sleek Strapless Full Slip

Slimming, smoothing, and actually pretty comfortable. With the added bonus that the slip design (as opposed to a bike short design) makes it fairly easy to utilize the facilities when nature calls.

What is your secret slimming undergarment?

I have the (cheaper) Victoria’s Secret version. I have a dress very similar to yours and frankly, without my “control undergarments” I look a little chubby. But the slip makes everything better, and mine has a built in bra with underwire, so it is perfect.

hi i have the exact spanx…just a warning, you might want to do a test run in it i.e. jumping around, bending over, etc. i’m not sure you’re size but i’m a c cup and i kept popping out of mind throughout the night :(

hyperballad, I had the same concern that you have- I’m a C to D cup, depending on the bra. When I wore it for 4+ hours on Saturday, it worked just fine.

beanchar, when I’ve worn it, I don’t get the uni-boob effect- but I’ve also worn it either with a bra or with a dress that has cups sewn into it.

I thought about ordering that, but my dress has a sweetheart neckline. I don’t want any part of the undergarment to show. Any suggestions about other similar products that would work with a sweetheart neckline?

Miss Dahlia- Does it tend to “ride up” at all from the bottom?

I’m just thinking about how a lot of times when I wear skirts with separate linings, the linings start to bunch up (maybe I have a gigantic booty?) and winds up wrapped around my waste if I don’t keep tugging it down. I was thinking of using a pair of Spanx with my dress but had only considered the shorts style due to a fear of the slip riding up, but obviously then I would have to actually take OFF my dress to pull the Spanx all the way back up should I require a trip to the bathroom over the 10 hour span I am wearing my dress!

stephanie….

who says you have to wear the slip all the way up? I had a sweethear neckline on my dress too and i wore mine below the braline.. i still had the sleek bodice and no peeking undergarment– but i also had sewn in cups in my dress for the girls’ support.

I hope you are joking. In the six months I’ve been visiting this site, I have never seen a rude comment such as yours. This is a place for advice and support, not for belittling.

Katie, for whatever reason, it looks like betting_im_not’s first comment didn’t come through- there was a little typo :-)

julieulie, I haven’t had any problems with it riding up.

I might have to give these a try. I too am nervous about the uniboob though. I love me my spanx! Makes dress shopping so much more fun!

Anyone want to admit to using the crotch opening on your biker short spanx? I do! I pee through all the time!

@Stephanie:

I also have one of these full slips which I lovingly call my “sausage casing”. I always wear it under the bra line because thats where it ends up on me anyway. After I lost that battle a few hundred times we now have a quite happy relationship.
