Dance With My Dad

April 9th, 2008 @ 5:03 pm by Ms. Dahlia

Mr. Dahlia and I have been taking dancing lessons off and on for close to a year now, and have had such a good experience that my parents decided to take lessons as well. So when I was in Cleveland this past weekend, I went along with them to their dance lesson, and got to spend some quality time with my dad.

Getting a little help from Joel, my parents’ instructor

We got this

A little spinning motion (from both us and the camera).

My dad and I spent most of the time practicing the foxtrot, which is what he and my mom have been working on the most. Since both of us have been taking lessons, we want to show off our skills on the dance floor at our wedding. But to what song? We need something from the 1940s or 1950s that is either big band music or music from the Rat Pack, which is what our band will be playing at the reception.

Anyone have any suggestions for a good dance song?  And are any of your parents taking dance lessons as well?

(And for those of you in Cleveland interested in taking dance lessons, I’d highly recommend that you check out Arthur Murray. Located in Mayfield off of I-271, the studio space is awesome and the dance instructors are really fun. And then you could dance with my parents :-) )

My fiance and I are doing our first dance (The Foxtrot!) to A Wink and A Smile by Harry Connick Jr. Its the perfect song.

Our wedding is practically Rat Pack themed! Some of our fave songs from the era that will be played at our wedding inlcude:
- L.O.V.E by Nat King Cole (our first dance song!)
- My Kind of Town by Sinatra (song I’m dancing to with my gpa)
- Come Dance with Me, Sinatra
- Come Fly with Me, Sinatra
- I Get a Kick Out of You, Sinatra
- Moon River, Henry Mancini or Sinatra (but it’s a waltz, not a fox trot)
-The Best is Yet to Come, Sinatra

Try something from the band Pink Martini- they have a great big band sound. some of my favorites-
‘let’s never stop falling in love’ (a great 1st dance song)
‘Lily’
‘Una notte a Napoli’
well, not exactly the best father daughter songs, but maybe a song that your mom and dad could light up the dance floor to?

My dad used to dance with me in the kitchen to “Moonlight Serenade” by Glenn Miller when I was a little girl - I’d put my feet on his feet, and he’d dance me around. :-)

Naturally, that was the song I picked for our father-daughter dance. It was perfect.

You and your pops look like dancing pros!

We used a fairly recent cover of “Baby You Got What It Takes,” edited down to a little under 3 minutes. I have since discovered that there are much earlier versions of the same song, which would definitely fit your general style. The lyrics are just ideal for the situation:

It takes more than an apple to stay away from you
And it’d take more than a lifetime to prove that I’ll be true
And it takes someone special to make me say “I do”
And baby, you got what it takes!

We’re probably doing “Fly me to the moon” by Sinatra, but I would have loved to have done “Ain’t it a Kick in the Head”!

We’re starting dance lessons soon … it will be interesting to see just HOW terrible we are and how much practice we need!

I personally wanted to dance to “What a Wonderful World” for the dance with my father, but my mother requested “Sunrise, Sunset” so he obliged because my mother gets EVERYTHING she wants. I don’t mind, it’s just so… SAPPY and BOOHOO she’s getting old and getting married, which I HATE in father/daughter dances. Why do we need to focus on the fact that I’m “leaving” my family, why can’t we just celebrate the fact that I found someone?

Miss Dahlia (or anyone else), do you know what’s happened to Indiebride? I haven’t been able to access Kvetch for two days now. . . .

(Sorry for the hijack, everyone.)

My dad knows I love Sinatra and has basically requested we dance to one of his songs. Some songs we’re considering: “Me and My Shadow” duet w/ Sammy Davis Jr., “On the Sunny Side of the Street”, “Pennies From Heaven”, “You Make Me Feel So Young”, “All I Need Is the Girl”, “More Than You Know”, and “That’s Life”. Also, Ella Fitzgerald never lets me down… Looking forward to finding out your selection!

Thanks for all of the suggestions, everyone!

Amy H.- I haven’t tried logging in since Monday, and I just checked now with no luck. I have no idea what’s going on, but hopefully it will be resolved soon. I know the last time kvetch went down it returned a couple of days later, so hopefully it’ll be back.

Thanks so mcuh for responding — I’ll keep checking too. I wonder if they need donations to help keep the site up . . . I’ll look into it when (hopefully) it comes back.

Your dancing looks great!

Hey this is BigSpoon from Kvetch, I googled what happened to indiebride and found this. I haven’t been able to get on either and I emailed a few girls and they also can’t access it. Any idea of a place to go to convene?

I totally spaced and forgot to request anything from our band for a father-daughter dance. We had requested our song as Ella’s Cheeck to Cheeck which they did wonderfully. Since they were already in a 40’s-50’s vibe at that point, they thankfully played a second song that we just stood up and danced with my dad (and my husband with his mom) and it’s as if we chose it specially for that - Fly me to the moon. I just think it’s so appropriate as really its our parents who gave us all the support we needed to go anywhere we wanted in life, including the moon!

I love Louis Armstrongs version of “Baby It’s Cold Outside.” “What A Wonderful World ” is also great. Check out other Armstrong songs because he has some great ones. there is also a duet between Nat King & Natalie Cole together I think it’s “When I fall in Love” of “Unforgettable”
