Mrs. Cherry Pie's Picture
Miss Cherry Pie, Seattle/Polebridge, Montana Age and Occupation: 25, Marketing Communications Specialist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Nurse Practitioner Engagement Date: August 26, 2006 Wedding Date: September 2008 Blogging Since: April 1, 2008 Venue: A tiny town just outside of Glacier National Park About Me: I think of life as a journey and I love the places it's taking me! I went to school to study Magazine Journalism, ended up with a second major in Japanese language, and now work at a company that makes software for libraries. I love writing, computers, photography, and the great outdoors. I spend most of my time playing Guitar Hero and Rock Band or geeking out online with Mr. Cherry Pie. I'm happiest when I'm on the road, especially traveling abroad, or just nesting quietly at home with my sweetie, who is a fabulous cook and bakes a delicious rendition of a certain cherry-filled dessert!
About Mrs. Cherry Pie

I had been engaged for over a year before I started trying on wedding dresses. Because Mr. Cherry Pie and I had planned a 2-year engagement, this was a leisure I could enjoy. And I was happy to take my sweet time simply window shopping here and there. Around September of last year, I decided to take the first steps toward getting a dress and try on a few gowns to decide on the cut, color, and style that I liked.

My first stop was La Belle Elaine’s in Seattle’s Fischer Plaza. It’s a wonderful store with a circular, easy-to-browse layout. Gowns at La Belle Elaine’s don’t come cheap, however, starting at about $1200 and ranging up to $8,000 couture costumes.

The first dress I liked was by Paloma Blanca, but it was $2200, and so, out of my price range:

( Paloma Blanca style 3754 )

Once I started to get a feel for what I liked, I came up with a list of requirements. I wanted a dress that was simple, classic, and elegant; a gown that wouldn’t look terribly out-of-place in Northwest Montana and that wouldn’t be too difficult to deal with during an outdoor wedding.

To help me narrow down my choices, I started to limit my search to dresses that fit into the following categories:

  • Sweetheart neckline
  • Strapless or sleeveless
  • Pearl white or off-white
  • A-line shape
  • Sweep or short chapel-length train
  • Very simple design with scarce, if any, beading or lace

My next stop was I Do Bridal in the Wallingford neighborhood, just up the street from my apartment. I Do Bridal is a very cute boutique with a helpful staff, and they let me come in a number of times without an appointment just to look through their stock.

I was having a lot of fun trying on dresses and not taking it too seriously, but I was overwhelmed both by the sheer number of choices and how many I absolutely hated. I started the gown shopping process thinking that I would love the first dress I tried on and every one after, but instead I was struck by how hard it was to find something that fit my style.

It seemed terribly difficult to find a dress that wasn’t huge, heavy, or bejeweled. I felt like most of the dresses I looked at were too close to overpriced prom dresses and not close enough to the elegant number I imagined myself in.

By this point, I was convinced I wouldn’t be satisfied unless I got a corset-backed dress from Maggie Sottero. I even tried one on from a Craigslist posting (but it was, again, too sparkly)! I set out to find one that more closely matched my guidelines above. I loved these two on the website:

( Irina by Maggie Sottero )

( Style SSM5049 by Sottero and Midgley)

I Do Bridal carried the “SSM5049″ dress (in white), which I didn’t like nearly as much as I thought I would. It had tiny sparkles along the side rouching, and I’m adamantly anti-sparkle where my dress is concerned.

The store didn’t stock the ‘Irina’ dress. Instead, they introduced me to ‘Vernice’:

(Vernice by Maggie Sottero

For the first time, I felt like I had a serious contender! Unfortunately, I Do Bridal and La Belle Elaines, like many bridal salons, do not allow photos, so I don’t have pictures of myself in either of these dresses. Needless to say, I thought they looked better on me than the unhappy, malnourished models. Why do wedding dress models always look so sullen? Or so… fifteen!? (OK, not these girls, but the Watters Brides girls are seriously underage.)

Anyway, I digress. I still had a long time to decide on a dress, and I wasn’t worried that I hadn’t found THE ONE immediately because it meant I couldn’t regret that decision later. I thought I at least had an idea of what I wanted. But the more time I spent looking at dresses, the farther I ventured from my original idea into uncharted territory. By the time I found my perfect dress, I’d scratched several requirements off my list and added several more. Good thing time was on my side!

Did anyone else start their wedding dress search ridiculously far in advance?

I ordered my dress 2 months after getting engaged (and 14 months before my wedding!). I love my dress but would have loved to spend more time dress shopping because it was so much fun to try them on! Those two Maggies are gorgeous dresses!

I found my dress on my first time out. My mom and I just went o look and after sorting through ugly, dress after uglier dress, after scary dress, I was ready to call it a day without having tried on or liked a thing…My mom suggested we try one last place (since it was a bunch of smaller shops in one big building) before leaving. I took a disinterested look around at all the bedazzled, bejeweled and becrapped dress (I am also very anti sparkle) and just as I was ready to say “ok mom let’s go”, she said “How about this one?”. It was perfect! It was an off-white, raw silk dress, strapless. no crap on it. No crazy 86 tie bustle. And the sample fit me PERFECTLY. So we figured we could get the first one I tried on and ran through the rest of the building looking from dress to dress to dress and after finding nothing else, calling everyone I know for their opinion (and getting no one on the phone) we said “Let’s just try it on one more time…” So I did and loved it. The seamstress made me a 1 tie busle while my mom and I went to lunch and I came back and picked it up an hour later…And that was a year and a half before the wedding …whew!

I was also a no lace. no beads. simple. bride :) I did try on a couple with beading and some were even beautiful - but not me :)

It’s much easier to shop when you can pass over 80% of the dresses! We only have like 3 SMALL dress boutiques here and one David’s (blah!) - but I did find and fall in love with my dress right away. A good thing since the wedding was only 4 months away.

I do wish I’d done some more dress shopping and trying on - mostly because after seeing all these dresses on Weddingbee I realize there is sooooo much more out there than what I looked at. I’ll see a dress picture and say - ooh I want to try that on. But I’m already married! :( If only I’d found Weddingbee sooner!

It’s only a small regret though - I do still love my dress. I just want to try them ALL ON! And then spin :)

I bought my dress a year before my wedding date (which is now coming up!!!). I thought I would just casually window shop for a while to get a feel for what I liked….and then I fell in love…and THEN the dress was on sale for 60% off (it’s a strapless, trumpet Romona Keveza)…so I couldn’t say no :)

I bought mine 19-20 months before the wedding…before he even proposed. I was worried my tastes would change, but they didn’t.

Istarted a few weeks after my engagement in October of 2007. I’ve gone twice since and my wedding isn’t until September of 2009. I have a bunch of ideas for other parts of the wedding but the dress scares me most.

Hey Miss Cherry Pie

I went to the same places as you in the same order. We first checked out La Belle Elaine’s but couldn’t justify the price so went to I Do Bridal and bought my dress there. Good luck dress shopping!

I got my dress a year 16 months into my engagement (started looking for a dress one month after we got engaged), and we had 11 months to go until the wedding….before we moved back our date to this august, so now technically, i got my dress 14 months before my wedding. I think what also took so long was that I was looking for a non-traditional wedding dress….in a sea of very traditional dresses.

The Vernice is my dress and I’m in love with it!! I’ve taken to affectionately calling it Vernie. I’m sure that you’ll find the dress of your dreams. Good luck on your search!

I have the Vernice too, in natural silk. I agree that the model is ridiculous! Why does this dress have the worst model? Anyway, I fell in love with an Amy Kuschel at her store in SF, and quickly wrote it off as the price tag was $3,200 (”sniff”). After a few more searches, I found my perfect dress. I was starting to get discouraged after trying on all of the synthetic fabric! I loved it before I looked at the price tag ($790), and then when I SAW the price tag, I was so overjoyed I couldn’t believe it. Its going to take 4 months to order, so I urge anyone wanting Maggie Sottero to shop early (and I’ve heard the company is tough to work with). Its rough out there in dress land…..

I got the Irina! It looks way better on than it did on the rack or on the model. I NEVER would have picked it unless it had been thrust into my dressing room by a knowing assistant. I paid under $450 for mine! Love it. It’s ridiculous that these fancy places make you think you have to spend THOUSANDS to find THE dress.
