Chronicles of a Two Dress Bride, Part IV

April 10th, 2008 @ 12:56 pm by Mrs. Toucan

Well, I certainly didn’t intend to keep you all waiting this long to see my new dress, but I hope you at least enjoyed the journey to get to this part - THE ACTUAL DRESS. And since you’ve been so patient through Part I, Part II, and Part III, I shall bombard you with pictures of my new wedding dress (whether you like it or not ;) ).

Which means that this is officially a NO MR. TOUCAN ZONE.

The funny thing is, I actually was convinced that it was going to look horrible on me. Sister Toucan had gone with me to my first appointment at VOWS, and my only instructions to her were to pick dresses from the sheath/mermaid/trumpet section. When we got to the dressing room, and I saw the dress, I thought, “ick, ruching - that won’t work for me.” After Sister Toucan helped me in it, she said, “oh, I actually like it.” I didn’t really believe her because we usually have different tastes in style.

I walked out of the dressing room, unconvinced and looking like this:

This is a very unattractive picture of
yours truly, but for story’s sake, I’ll post it. ;)

I wasn’t impressed. The dress was clearly too big, and I had to hold it up to keep it from falling. But then, my dress consultant, April, pulled the dress back so I could see how it would look fitted:

The dress is riding a little low in this picture,
but it was the best full length picture.

Another picture of the bodice pulled in a little tighter

Hmm… it looks A LOT better, but I wasn’t really feeling the severe sweetheart neckline. April suggested that the seamstress could take down some of the chest area so that it would be in better proportion to my body:

Trying to fold down the boobs

After I got a better idea of what the dress would look like fitted to me, I really started digging the dress:

Here’s a better idea of the dress’s boob reduction

As the “real” fitted version of the dress started to take shape in my mind, I wanted to see all the other angles of the dress. The side view:

“Suck it in!”

Full side view

And then, what really sold me - the back of the dress:

While not as dramatic as my first dress, I love love LOVE the train on this dress. I love the gathering at the top of the train, and how it just seems to delicately flow. And as a small random side note, I was pretty convinced that I didn’t want to wear a veil, until this picture convinced me otherwise:

I thought this simple cathedral veil framed the dress so well, I thought I’d be crazy not to wear one!

Anyway, back to the dress. :) After I had decided that this dress was THE dress, I started talking price. Since I already knew that the dress would need quite a bit of work in alterations (although surprisingly, the quote wasn’t much more than some of the other dresses that almost fit perfectly), I was hoping that it wouldn’t cost a fortune. As luck would have it, it was the cheapest dress (by a lot) I tried on! Despite being one of the “Mega Markdown” dresses already, I decided to ask if they could give me a better price. And what do you know? It never hurts to ask. :) VOWS has already sent off my dress for cleaning (since they sell mostly all samples, they include the cleaning the dress in cost of the dress), and I have my first fitting scheduled for next week!

So there you have it. The story of how Miss Toucan officially became a two-dress bride. I hope all the waiting and the suspense was worth it! What do you think of the new dress? Do you likey?

Gorgeous!!! It fits your personality MUCH better than the first–and I LOVE the squared off/v-notch neckline/bodice so much more than the sweetheart shape. Good choice!

Love it! I was eagerly waiting to see THE dress after reading the past few posts. :) You look so beautifully elegant and feminine in the dress.

Miss Shortcake says:

with the alterations ( like the lower neckline) it looks FABULOUS - and more like you are wearing the dress, rather than the dress wearing you (which was the case with your first one).
I love cathedral length veils too!

Love the dress! I first saw it on knottie Ryanserafin and thought she looked so beautiful, sophisticated and elegant!

Shortcake, so true! I agree…but it’s more than the fit; the attitude you portray helps determine who’s in charge — you or the dress!

So pretty, Touc! It bears a slight resemblance to Melissa Sweet’s Mila, which will OFFICIALLY be my dress when I place the order (long story) in mid-June. I love the uniqueness of both…it’s bridal classic meets wedding modern. ;-)

I LOVE the back of that dress. Just beautiful!

And it’s so important that you love your dress. You will be a beautiful bride no matter what, but you want to feel confident and comfortable in your dress. Not secretly wishing that you picked something else.

Good choice :)

Gorgeous! And I love how Vows was willing to negotiate! And I totally love it with the veil; it makes the whole outfit complete. When the Vows lady put the veil on me, everyone with me gasped — it makes such a difference to how bride-y you feel!
