About Mrs. Tiramisu

I love Paper-Source!

LOOK what arrived in the mail late last week:

There you see enough paper to make invites, invite folders + envelopes, RSVPs + envelopes, direction cards and reception cards x 130! (Plus about 20 extra of each for when I inevitably screw up.) Along with my order- which came by way of free shipping!- came the latest Paper-Source catalog. I tossed it aside to get to my beloved paper more quickly- you can see it in the upper right-hand corner there- but happened to pick it up to flip through a little later on.

I was impressed and surprised to see that it is full of inspiration! It seems Paper-Source has found their target market, as all but a couple pages of this thing are dedicated to weddings. Not only are there a ton of invite ideas, both custom-made and DIY, but there are also great place card, favor, and table setting ideas. I had my heart set on river rock escort cards- painted rocks like the ones below- but I was really having a hard time figuring out how to get the names onto the rocks without a) paying a calligrapher beau-coup bucks to do it, or b) slapping some paint on there myself and risking looking like a second grader did it.
Enter the Paper-Source catalog! Look what I found on page 15:

Isn’t this perfect?! So much easier to pull off than painted rocks, and it will probably end up looking a whole lot nicer in the end.

So my plan is to actually use these as place cards, not escort cards. There’s an idea in the works (inside my little head that is) for cd favors that will double as escort cards, but I think these would look nice on the table itself. Does anyone think it would be gross to have a rock sitting on your napkin though? Unsanitary? Or is a little dirt okay as long as it is in the name of something cute for the wedding?

Mainers must think alike because I have both those rock images saved as well. It will be fun hand-picking all the rocks! Good luck!

Mmmmm. I would wash the rocks first. Actually in the papersource photo (I have the same catalogue) they might have spray-lacquered the rocks as well; they look a little shiny. I would think you might also want to use a little hot glue or a glue dot to hold the ribbon to the rock in at least one place. Very cute idea!

I went to a wedding near the beach in Australia that had rocks as name cards … except they weren’t actually rocks - the mother of the groom was a ceramics teacher and made them out of clay.

It was a really nice touch, and I didn’t find it unsanitary at all (although they were just above the place settings, not on the napkins themselves). As long as you think it matches the location and mood of your wedding, I say go for it.

Oh, and they’d just written the names on with a marker pen, and it looked fine.

I would just throw them in a bucket of bleach water for a couple hours, that should kill anything that’s on them.
If you want to do the original idea, I have a feeling that it is actually not hand-painted but a vinyl rub-on/sticker sort of thing…
If you have ever seen Uppercase Living, I’m pretty sure that’s what they put on those rocks…there are a lot of knock-offs of Uppercase Living, in fact I think they even have some at Target.
Hope that helps,
Kaci

I think as long as you have washed the rocks off, they should be fine without the napkin underneath.

You can buy polished black river rocks. Polished rocks don’t look dirty. Either way, as long as they are washed, they’ll be fine.

I love paper-source and they need a store in New York City.

i’m a germ-a-phobe, so I wouldn’t be thrilled about having a rock on my dinner plate or napkin. But if it were above the place setting, that would be ok. What if you flip-flop your ideas? Have rocks as escort cards, and CDs as place cards?

Use shiny polished stones — they don’t seem as dirty (they might be but it just doesn’t look that way!). I would kind of be squeemish about a rock on my place setting, even if it did look great.

I totally don’t think it is gross. I think dried star fish are soooo much worse and it is done all the time. I would recommend placing the rock of the table instead of the napkin. It would be more appropriate if they were closer to the flowers than the food.

I was thinking about having rocks as favors. It might sound odd, but they would be engraved with a design that would include our date. I think people could use them as paper weights or in their garden. It follows our theme of organic modern and our setting (RI coast Private club right on the rocks). http://www.loverocksinc.com/pilot.asp?pg=weddings

So I’m not sure exactly where my friend Vic bought her river rocks, but I think it was ebay?? (As seen here as escort cards: http://www.weddingbee.com/2007/06/04/garden-party)

As long as they’re the polished ones, I think it’s totally fine :) Not dirty at all.

I love the look of river rocks. The polished ones don’t look dirty at all.

If they are polished and washed, there is no more risk of germs on the rocks IMO than there is from anything else. =) Very cute idea ! I”m thinking about using wooden “cookies” for place cards myself, so I will have to think about this as well !
