A Scent To Remember

April 14th, 2008 @ 9:10 am by Mrs. Jasmine

When I was sixteen, nothing made me feel more chic than spritzing my wrist with Estee Lauder’s Pleasures. The sweet, innocent scent became my trademark high school scent and a mere whiff transports me to winter formals, college applications, and driving around in my red Maxima.

In college, I received Marc Jacobs perfume as a gift and it quickly became my signature scent. The creamy gardenia fragrance was intoxicating and I loved the classic sophistication of the bottle. I also adored how many compliments I received on it, especially from cute boys :)

After college, I entered perfume purgatory where I wafted noncommittally from Thierry Mugler’s Angel to Lancome’s Miracle to Victoria’s Secret Heavenly. With each scent, I can remember distinct encounters, feelings, moments in my life.

Since I have such a strong association between fragrance and various stages in my life, I decided I needed a really special wedding day perfume. Something memorable and lovely to usher in an exciting and romantic time in my life. After considering many wonderful contenders (and enduring many perfume-related headaches), I found my perfect wedding day scent: Bond No. 9 Chinatown.

Chinatown is a creamy, exotic blend of peach blossom, peony, gardenia, tuberose, vanilla, and cardamom. I can’t imagine a more perfect scent for me– I couldn’t stop smelling my wrist when I put it on. The bottle is just gorgeous and I love how the fuschia cherry blossoms match my wedding colors. And I splurged for the accompanying body silk which is a decadent body lotion that feels like pure silk on the skin. I’m so excited to use Chinatown on my wedding day!

What’s your wedding day scent?

I brought this up to FI, saying that I needed to find a good perfume to wear on our wedding day, and he actually got kind of annoyed. “Then you won’t smell like you,” was his response. “Do you not want me to smell like me?” I’ve worn the same scent for years and it’s apparently going to continue to be that way!

My husband wanted me to wear my old scent, but I wanted something new, something that would remind me of my wedding day.

Gucci Envy Me. (not the best name, I know)
I didn’t want to spray on too much for fear of it being overwhelming, so my husband actually doesn’t remember the smell.

Ever since the wedding, everytime I put it on, it puts me right back in the hotel room, getting ready and I get that oh-myGod-I’m about-to-go-get-married feeling all over again. :)

Love and White by Creed. It smells so fresh and wonderful (not to mention the name is quite fitting)!

FI doesn’t want me to change either- he loves my scent. But you know, in a way I feel like the scent I wear now is a bit childish. I really do like it (Annick Goutal Petit Cherie- the name says it all I guess) but I’ve been wanting to go with something more sophisticated but still “me” to signifiy my married status.

Hermes’ Un Jardin en Mediterranee…gorgeous, clean, and yet very indulgent. Very appropriate given our honeymoon location. :-)

I wear the Marc Jacobs gardenia perfume everyday and love it. Haven’t yet decided if I will get special wedding day scent, though it could be a fun spurge to buy before the wedding (although I can think of lots of splurges!).

The first gift I got from a friend after I got engaged was the book “Wedding Chic: The Savvy Bride’s Guide to Getting More while Spending Less” and it had a few good tips. Among them: instead of buying an entire bottle of that special wedding-day perfume, grab a few samples from the department store counter instead. Seemed like a good tip to me! It would save a bundle, though I don’t know how many perfumes come in closed samples anymore…

Promesse, by Cacharel. I love perfume and have a cabinetful. But this is the one I met Mr. LB in, and the one he always points to when I ask him to pick one.

Isn’t it awesome to feel like a scent was just made for you? :)
