Trouble In The Skies

April 14th, 2008 @ 2:37 pm by Mrs. Penguin

I was listening to NPR on Friday morning and they mentioned that yet another airline was filing for Chapter 11.  I jokingly sung at the top of my lungs “FRONTIER!”, so it was quite comical when Steve Inskeep, as if on cue, confirmed that it was indeed Frontier Airlines that was the newest victim of trouble in the skies.

We booked our flight for our honeymoon in Mexico on Frontier Airlines, and while you don’t typically think of Frontier (based out of Colorado) to be a carrier who flies to Mexico, they have great deals, new planes, and YES, flights to Mexico!

From what I gather, Frontier made the decision to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy after the bank that handled its credit card processing threatened to hold back the receipts from sales of airline tickets, which would cripple Frontier’s ability to continue normal business operation.

Frontier has committed, at least at the moment, to continue normal flight operations.

This is a turbulent time for virtually all airlines and perhaps a lesson to those of us booking our honeymoons not to book flights too many months in advance. Who knows if the airline you plan to fly will be in operation?

How far in advance did you book your honeymoon flight?

well we are planning for a late honeymoon so it’s a good thing we haven’t booked any flight travels whatsoever till after the wedding. our minimoon, we will be driving down to outer banks so definitely will be less hassle than dealing with flights

Oh no! Hope they hold out long enough to fly you guys there (and back), Miss P!

We just booked our flights recently, so that would be about 2 months in advance.

We originally booked our honeymoon tix to Hawaii on ATA who went bankrupt on April 2nd. So I can totally relate!! Fortunately we should be able to get our money back from our CC company.

We booked our honeymoon on ATA. They filed bankruptcy. All flights canceled forever!

We might be able to get our money back through our bank. They’ve already credited the account, but we have to send them a letter justifying our reason for wanting our money back. They may take it away after they get our letter.

Th whole situation is really shady because Chapter 11 is supposed to be used for reorganization of the company instead of a complete shut-down. They obviously found a loophole in the bankruptcy law so that they wouldn’t have to file for Chapter 7.

Anyway, now we are looking for tickets once more, and because of rising fuel prices, we are looking at paying double what we had paid before. This absolutely sucks.

My fiance’s roommate booked his July honeymoon flights on ATA, so they are now scrambling for new flights. Our flights are booked with American Airlines for our August honeymoon.

By the way, I’ve been hearing rumors that Champion Air will stop all flights in the next few weeks.

It was for this reason that we went with Continental instead of Alitalia when booking our flight to Milan–at Christmas we found out that Alitalia was having some issues, including rampant speculation about whether they were going to be split up, or sold, etc.–and the last thing we needed was to get screwed over on something like that. Fortunately, Continental has a direct flight out to Milan daily, and last week we booked our tickets and got a pretty decent price for a non-stop flight.

Best of luck with your flight arrangements–and make sure you keep an eye on other options in case Frontier does go kaput.

Thank GOD we decided on Yosemite for our “mini-moon.” We had been vacillating between Mexico and Hawaii, and it seems either way we probably would’ve run into these hassles.

I’ll be crossing my fingers that Frontier continues to run at full service *crosses*.

We booked in October for a June honeymoon on United Airlines. They seem to be relatively stable for now. *crosses fingers*

We booked at the end of December but I am glad we did. Our hotel is sold out of rooms, all the great flights on Hawaiian have been gone for months and I am currently crossing my fingers and toes that Hawaiian isn’t the latest airline to tumble. At least not until after June 14th.

We booked flights last month for our November honeymoon. While waiting may be prudent due to bankruptcies, booking early on a major carrier can also pay off, as rising fuel prices lead to rising ticket prices. I think our tickets already cost about $100 more.

We are in the same boat as you. :( I booked our August honeymoon flight to Cancun on Frontier in January. I am keeping my fingers and toes crossed!!! Hope they continue flying until August 10th, our return flight back to Las Vegas.

We booked our September honeymoon to Hawaii on ATA and are still sorting through getting our refund. We rebooked on American Airlines and are keeping our fingers crossed nothing happens to them. The recent round of cancelled flights had us worried!

Our flights to Hawaii had to be rearranged due to the closing of airlines ATA and Aloha Air. I’m just grateful we weren’t already *out* there having to deal w/ the hassle!
