About Mrs. Cherry Pie

[ Part 1 ]

After visiting I Do Bridal and La Belle Elaine’s, my next stop was Cicada Bridal in downtown Seattle.

Cicada is an independent bridal salon that makes custom gowns. The gowns are either based on one of the styles in the Cicada collection or on the bride’s own ideas. After having a hard time finding a dress that was “me” at the other boutiques, I was psyched about the possibility of having one custom made!

Cicada is set up in a way that makes it fun and relaxing to browse the racks. The dresses in their collection are beautiful and some come in two pieces (corset top and skirt), which means that there are a wealth of style combinations to try on. They also offer a large variety of simply gorgeous accessories. The attendants were very helpful and a pleasure to work with. My only regret was that some of the dresses were only available in small sizes (I’m 5’10″) and I wasn’t able to try them on. I really have to be able to see what a dress looks like on me (even if it’s ill-fitting) if I’m going to consider buying it!

They also had a bunch of dresses with corset-back lacing, my current obsession thanks to Maggie Sottero. I was a big fan of this dress:

( Kate in the Cicada “couture” collection )

Unfortunately, it didn’t look right on me, even though it is a beautiful design. Since Cicada’s custom dresses start at $2,000 which was out of my price range. I shelved the idea of having one made for the time being.

After visiting Cicada, I made the obligatory trip to David’s Bridal to see if I could fall in love with a gown that was actually affordable. I brought a list of dresses that looked pretty on the website but ultimately, I couldn’t stand 90% of them in person. Most of the dresses were super heavy on the BLING and those that weren’t seemed to have something lacking in craftsmanship.

The front-runner from the David’s Bridal trip was this dress:

( Style V8592 by David’s Bridal )

It was less of a serious contender and more of an “oh, that’s kind of pretty” dress. On the plus side, I did have a great time trying on some absolutely hilarious poufy dresses while we were there. But since that was the best David’s could do for me, I crossed it off my list.I had now made a serious “first round” of visits to bridal boutiques. It was time to stop playing around and get down to business. I was committed to finding a dress that I LOVED!

I went back to I Do Bridal to try on “Vernice” by Maggie Sottero again, convinced that I would have to have it… Like many bridal boutiques, they don’t allow pictures- so I didn’t even have a photo of myself wearing it to be sure I still liked it. I figured that one more modeling session in the dress would convince me.

But it was gone! They had sold it off the rack!

At this point, I had exhausted all the dresses in the store that fit my “requirements” and I started to try on things I didn’t think I’d like. Surprisingly, I became enamored with a lacy, ivory Watters Brides dress:

( Watters Brides style 1079B )

The shop’s version was ivory, not white, and I tried it with both a chocolate brown ribbon and a burgundy ribbon to match our bridesmaids’ dresses. It looked fabulous!

I was almost sold on this dress when they showed me one that had just come in from Mikaella Bridal (the less expensive sister company to Paloma Blanca):

( Mikaella Bridal style 1262 )

I think the dress also looked great on me. The lace is subtle, the gathers are pretty, and the brooch is a nice touch- and replaceable, to boot.

It’s a simple and elegant dress, much like the Watters gown. I just wasn’t sure about the overall effect, and if it was what I imagine wearing at our wedding.

And therein lay the issue with all of these dresses… I thought they were pretty and they looked good on me, which is more than I could say for for 99% of the other wedding gowns on the market. But I wasn’t sure if they were fitting. They were somehow not the “classic” look I was seeking and not quite right for Montana.

I was starting to think that I would never find the ‘perfect’ dress and that I would have to settle for something that was just “all right.” This thought was particularly disheartening considering that I was about to buy the most expensive dress I’d EVER buy to wear for just ONE NIGHT.

I was getting fed up and stressed out. Worst of all, the clock was ticking. I had two months left within the “ideal” time frame to buy my dress and I felt like I had already looked everywhere.

Did anyone else search fervently for a wedding dress without “the one” jumping out at you?

I hate that some shops don’t let you take pictures. It’s very important to take pictures as many dresses look great in person but crap in photos. I fell in love with 2 dresses, went home and looked at the pics, changed my mind as one looked hideous! That made the search easier!

if it makes you feel any better, i tried on about 10 dresses before finding the right one. and it wasn’t a “wow, this is my dress” feeling–it was more, “wow… i really like this and it looks good on me and I could see pictures looking wonderful with this dress and I’m running out of time.”

i didn’t have a fairy-tale experience finding it, but i know it’s lovely and i think it’s very ‘me’.

I’m in Seattle too and had a hard time finding THE DRESS…I liked almost every dress I tried on at I DO BRIDAL, but I didn’t love any one dress. I ended up finding my dress at a Redmond boutique (Amanda’s Bridal Boutique - they were so helpful and great to work with), but it wasn’t THE ONE experience that I’ve heard other brides talk about…oh well, I’m happy with my final choice

I had a lot of trouble finding a simple classic design like you describe. There were a few dresses I tried that would have been fine, but I didn’t feel like any of them was “the one” and I didn’t want to settle. I also didn’t like a lot of the cheap fabrics that were used for the dresses in my price range. I ended up having a dress made for a fraction of the cost of a designer dress. I got the exact design that I wanted and beautiful silk fabric! Let me know if you want their info. They work with brides all over the country.

I tried on more dresses than I could count, found a couple I liked, but nothing too special. I finally ended up finding the One at Filene’s, when I was browsing the racks and silently fuming over the fact that one of the ones I kinda liked had just been taken when I saw the right dress hanging it front of me (feelings and all)! Don’t give up yet!

I think that finding the “One” is a bunch of bull. Of course, if you have an unlimited budget it is highly more probable :). I mean, there are plenty of dresses out there that I tried on, believe me, but I never really felt like there was the “One.” Besides, once I actually tried the dresses on, I ended up liking things that I wouldn’t have even taken off the rack in the beginning. Don’t be discouraged. Remember the feeling of your venue and go from there. You also don’t want to dress down too much. You’re supposed to be the best dressed person of the night. I know I had to be told that more than once.

The Watters and Michaea dresses were two of my favorites, but they did not fit my Maine outdoorsy wedding. I shopped in approximatey 15 stores in 5 states, and had competey given up on finding THE ONE when I came across mine. I hope you find it soon.

After one or two trips out, I also decided that “the one” didn’t exist. I tried on a bunch of gowns that I thought were beautiful and very flattering, but nothing that I really wanted to buy. Eventually (on a trip when I wasn’t even expecting to try anything on, BTW), I tried on a dress that felt so “me” the second I put it on. It’s not really a knock-out dress, relative to the others that I liked. But it still feels like the right choice.

I had the same problem - but fortunately, I found a dressmaker who was celebrating her 25th Anniversary and gave me 25% off my dress! Good luck in your dress search!

Holy crap, Miss Milkshake, I just read all your dress saga posts. I love that we looked at the same places and tried some of the same dresses. That is truly hilarious!

I’m in the Bay Area and went to about 8 stores looking for the right dress. I finally found one that they are able to customize for me, but it ended up being super expensive. I’m not sure if it’s the “one” but I was incredibly happy to have something ordered. I can’t say that I enjoyed the dress shopping experience — I found it incredibly stressful!! Good luck in your search!

I’ve been to 10 shops and have yet to find my dress! I’m starting to feel a little jaded about it all. But I don’t give up easily :) Planning to go to a couple more this weekend.

My friend never really had a dress jump out at her. In the end she picked one her fiance mentioned looked nice in a magazine.

I personally exhausted my search. I was tired of looking and ready to just buy the first dress I wore that seemed to work. But was just slightly out of the price range I was shooting for.

My friend convinced me to try one more place - so I went by myself and lo and behold. My style of dress had just arrived that day, wasn’t tagged yet, but they just happened to put it out just in case someone wanted to try it. And it’s weird. I had “the one” moment. Up until then I didn’t believe it was true.

I don’t know. I think it helps to have someone else with you - I’m not sure if you have a friend or bridesmaid with you, But I know for my friend, having me with her and saying “that looks really wonderful on you” and the fact that she trusted what I said to her - helped her decide.

I didn’t buy “the one” myself until I took a friend with me to see what they thought.

I drool over Cicada every time I walk past it, I have actually never been inside because they always seem to be closed when I head over the pass. It sounds like I shouldn’t ever go inside since their dresses start at twice what I would like to spend. Oh well.

Courage! I was insanely lucky - going out to what I thought was a chi chi salon in the north bay to please my FMIL, but was surprised at the top notch service and fabulous prices. What I thought I wanted was absolutely not at all what I ended up with. My ONE was a dress I pulled off the rack as a joke - something fun to try on. Turns out, it was perfect.

My dress came in last week - I’m waiting to pick it up until my mom arrives next week from out of town. After reading some of the other dress posts, I’m a bit nervous that the magic will have dissipated, but I still feel I made the right choice.

Keep on looking, but don’t drive yourself crazy!
